Make My MMO: The Fractured fiasco (original) (raw)
Welcome to the 2023 edition of Make My MMO, MOP’s long-running MMO crowdfunding column. We’ve already rounded up all the big MMO crowdfunding news narratives of 2022, so now, it’s time to recap the more granular news from just the last few weeks.
At the end of December, we became deeply concerned for the future of Kickstarted MMO Fractured Online, which was in early access under the Gamigo banner. Following a major round of corporate layoffs during which it axed four games and pushed them off to other publishers, Gamigo also silently removed Fractured from its website, prompting players to assume the worst about the game’s fate. After a worrying silence, Fractured’s team finally announced that the MMO was being removed from sale, wiped, and returned to closed testing thanks to “troubles with [its] third-party backend platform […] responsible for managing game servers,” which it claimed had nothing to do with SpatialOS or Gamigo. To date, Discord statements have been pretty vague thanks to what Fractured’s boss called “legal reasons.”
Meanwhile, Star Citizen talked up its 2022 earnings, Pantheon is preparing for pre-alpha, Camelot Unchained crowed over its investment influx, Temtem is gearing up for a Switch patch, Book of Travels announced it’s team is back to full capacity, Ashes of Creation got a new office, Embers Adrift added a new dungeon, and we recapped Elite Dangerous’ rocky year.
Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last few weeks, plus our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

Ashes of Creation
Yes, some crowdfunded MMOs most definitely do succeed. But others crash and burn, and you need to hear about the whole spectrum of games that sought your money early in exchange for the promise of input and transparency. And that’s exactly what Make My MMO does several times a month. Help us keep ’em accountable, would ya?
