"Using exhaustive interviews with friends and colleagues from every aspect of Anthony's life, including his best friend from school, fellow children from the Actors' Orphanage, cricketing friends, colleagues, and those who remained close to him until his death in 2004, this book aims to uncover the real Anthony Ainley - The Man Behind The Master."

I had a dream about him last night.

We were at a convention, of course. Dreamtime being fluid, he was somewhat older than the last time I saw him in person, though not as old as he was when he died; I was my current age as near as I could tell. And, just as when we first met almost thirty years ago, he recognized me across a crowded room and called to me. I practically melted into his arms as we said hello. I remember him stopping before he kissed me to ask me something about my husband - was he here, or would he be okay with this, or whatever - and I told him "He doesn't have any say in the matter." (I told gridlore about the dream when I got up this morning, and he just laughed at this. He knew where he stood, all along.) I remember being surprised in the dream that he was kissing me quite so deeply in public, as he always seemed to be such a private man. We walked to his next panel with our arms around one another.
I would give ten years of my life just to talk to him again.

gridlore asked me to scan some photos tonight, and when he handed me the pics, this was in the stack. This was taken in August of 1990, during the dead dog party of a long-since-extinct Doctor Who convention. The joke amongst the convention staff was that Anthony smiled with all 32 teeth in front at once, and you can really see it here.
( Because I have no idea how big this is actually going to beCollapse )

Thinking about Ant...

I often think about all my dear friends who've died, because of Cancer, and it is so depressing to realise that the number is so high! Last year, in April, my dear friend Liz Sladen died at the young age of 63. I cried for days every time I saw her photo on my wall. She'd signed a lovely photo of herself as Sarah Jane Smith, and we had kept in touch for two years. She was so kind, and we wrote letters back and forth. She never once told me that she was ill with Cancer, but I guess she didn't want me to worry. She must have been terrified! Poor dear!
I'm not surprised to find out that she and Ant were friends. Ant was like that. I think he must have been friends with many of the Who actors. I often wonder what it would have been like for us if he were still with us. He would have been 79 last August, and this coming August he would have hit the big 80! He was the same age as my parents, and I think it's sad that he died at the age of only 72! SIGH! Dear Ant, I miss you so! I miss all my dear friends who had their life taken from them by cruel Cancer!

As promised earlier, here's the picture of the three lovely Doctor Who actors whose birthday it is today:
Not quite as I thought I remembered it, but here it is. Bless you, Ant, and your grin.
(BTW, it's from a promotion for a convention called Nebula '93 in the November 1992 issue of Dreamwatch, a sadly now defunct [in print anyway] magazine which was called DWB (DreamWatch Bulletin) at the time. Curse me not being able to afford to travel there. And being five years old at the time. And not knowing about Doctor Who at the time anyway...)

Lest you think I have forgotten (which I never, ever could), today would have been Ant's 79th birthday. Of course, were he alive, no doubt he'd still be telling everyone he was born in 1937, so we'd all think it was his 74th. Extraordinarily nice man he was, he was also a bit vain. ;)
Today is a day of quiet reflection for me. It may sound silly to some people, even when I do explain Ant and I had a back-and-forth letter correspondence, that I am so attached to the memory of him. "Wasn't he just some Doctor Who actor?". No. He was a person, and one who showed me more kindness in a year-and-a-third's worth of letters than my own family has in my entire life. I may be exaggerating but not by much.
Okay, I'm getting a bit too caught up in myself... it is his birthday after all, as well as that of Survival co-stars Sylv and Sophie... you know, I think I actually have an old sci-fi magazine of the three of them together at some convention and Ant's grinning with his arms around the both of them. If I can find it, I'll scan it and put it up here later this evening. I dunno why I didn't think of that before. :/
