The world health organization (WHO) classification defines new histological and molecular variants of urothelial carcinoma in 2004. One of them is plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC). Less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature (with a reported incidence of up to 3%).There is limited data available on the clinicohistological features or prognosis of PUC. We reported a 58-yearold man with a complaint of right flank pain that referred to testis accompanied by gross hematuria and history of heavy smoking. Imaging showed polypoid mucosal thickening in posterolateral wall of bladder base. Patient was treated with TURBT and BCG. Finally, pathological study confirmed clinicodiagnosis of TCC (plasmacytoid type). PUC is a poor prognostic variant of TCC and early diagnosis is important. Review of other literatures showed early diagnosis of plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC) cannot be made due to the absence of hematuria until the late stage of the disease. Cystoscopy and biopsy for earlier diagnosis of PUC because of delayed occurrence of hematuria are required. Patient follow-up after treatment for this variant of urothelial carcinoma is highly recommended. Further studies are needed for evaluation of relationship between smoking and PUC. Several studies have been conducted to identify these cells in colorectal cancer, including stem cell marker CD24. This study has evaluated the association of CD24 expression with clinicopathologic features and survival in an immunohistochemical )IHC) study that compared colorectal cancer tissues with adjacent normal tissues.

Incidence of adenocarcinoma of esophagus has an increasing trend in Iran. Co-existence of both cancers in one patient is very rare. We report a middle age woman from northern Iran with a typical presentation of esophageal cancer, who was found to have a dual esophageal cancer. The disease was found in the advanced stage with pulmonary metastasis at the presentation. Palliative chemo-radiotherapy induced partial clinical response.

Cancer stem cells are a group of tumor cells that have regeneration and multi-order differentiation capabilities. Expression of CD24 and CD133 was studied in a paraffin block of colorectal cancer and normal tissues near tumors with the immuneohistochemical method in patients who were referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari. A total of 50 samples (25 males and 25 females) with a mean age of 67.57±13.9 years old with range 28-93 years, included 3 mucinous carcinoma and 47 adenocarcinoma. Expression of CD133 marker was negative in 29 cases and positive in 21 cases. Expression of CD24 in tissue near tumor cells was found in 30% of available samples. The relationship between expressing CD24 with treatment (surgery and chemotherapy) was significant and its relationship with ...

Therefore, we aimed to investigate the frequency of HER-2 expression in patients with colorectal cancer, and explore the relationship between clinicopathological prognostic factors and its expression based on immunohistochemical analysis. METHODS This study included 50 patients with a histologically proven diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma who received surgery at Imam Khomeini Hospital affiliated to Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences. First, HER-2/neu protein expressions were detected by immunohistochemistry and then the data extracted from recorded files. RESULTS The median age of the patients was 60.2±13.9 years (range: 25-93 years). There was no significant relationship between size of tumor, age, sex, lymph node metastases, distant metastasis, differentiation, and stage of the disease with positive expression of HER-2 in this study. CONCLUSION No significant relationship between expression of HER-2 and clinicopathological prognostic factors was found in our study. Further comprehensive and prospective trial with standard method to evaluate the role of HER-2 expression among patients with colorectal cancer is needed.

Recently the role of some of CSCs in gastric adenocarcinoma has been studied. This study was performed in order to evaluate CD44 and CD133 expressions by immunohistochemistry in 95 primary gastric adenocarcinoma and their relation to clinical and pathological parameters of these tumors. There was a significant correlation between CD44 expression and cancer subtype (intestinal), tumor size (4-8 cm), depth of invasion, no lymphatic/vascular invasion and moderate differentiation. There was a significant correlation between CD133 expression and patient's age (> 65 years), cancer subtype (intestinal), tumor size (4-8 cm), depth of invasion and moderate differentiation. CSC markers like CD 44 and CD133 had high expression in primary gastric adenocarcinoma and had some relations to clinical and pathological parameters of tumors.

Several etiological factors including environmental factors have been recognized for breast cancer. Epstein Barr virus as a viral etiological factor has been proposed. So far, several studies have investigated the relationship between development of breast cancer and Epstein Barr virus, but few have been done in Iran. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was an association between EBV infection and female breast cancer in Iran. Materials and Methods: We analyzed paraffin embedded breast tissue specimens by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) including breast cancer specimens (as case group) and breast fibroadenoma specimens (as control group). PCR was performed to amplify specific sequences of EBV. Results: From 130 cases of breast samples, 67 cases of breast cancer tissues and 41 cases of breast fibroadenoma tissues had adequate quality and quantity of DNA to detect EBV. PCR for EBV was positive in 4 invasive ductal carcinoma specimens (7.3%) and only one of the fibroadenoma specimens (2.4%). No significant association was found between EBV infection and invasive ductal carcinoma (p> 0.05). Also, patient's age and histological grade of IDC were not correlated with EBV infection (p>0.05). Conclusion: We observed no etiologic association between EBV infection and invasive ductal carcinoma of female breast in our regions; however, further studies are required to elucidate this association.
