In particular, I focus on the theme of reading and writing in the conditions of the Soviet prisons and labor camps, where writing was mostly prohibited, and reading was limited and highly regulated and censored. However, the inmates of Soviet prisons managed to create, read, write and even publish their notes while incarcerated. I show how three survivors of the Soviet camps—Varlam Shalamov, Evgenia Ginzburg, and Eduard Kuznetsov used the acts of reading and writing to preserve their identities from complete corruption and disintegration. I argue that word as a grammatical unit of text initiates the process of the recovery and deliverance of prisoners’ morale.

This paper explores the central role that the medical reports about ill or dying writers play in ... more This paper explores the central role that the medical reports about ill or dying writers play in establishing the dialogue between the textual domains of medicine and Russian literature since the 1830s. I will argue that the corpus of medical "popularized" writing that started forming after Pushkin's death mediated the exposure of mass literature to physiological experiences of disease and death, and also drew the attention of physicians to writers and fictional characters as objects of medical interest. The interest towards the writer's body produces the new subgenre, namely, the medical biography, or pathography 1. I will focus on the corpus of medical texts linked to Pushkin's and Gogol's agony and death; I will show how these reports go through the transformations – from the strictly professional report to the widely read memoirs, and furthermore, to the origin of the medical fiction in Russia. In the medical community, the texts by the nineteenth-century doctors become a model in the academic study of medical techniques of the past. In the realm of fiction, on the other hand, doctors become narrators of the stories, and thus texts are shaped as medical reports. I will show how both tendencies originate, develop and protrude into the twentieth century. The relationship between doctor's stories about sick writers and its reflection in literature and medical writings is noted in a number of works. Starting from 1890s, a series of medical essays on the personalities of famous writers (Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy) are published: mostly, the essayists analyze the memoirs of the family doctors who treated these persons 2. Later, a study on " psychopathology in literature " is published in the Klinicheskii Arkhiv Genialnosti i Odarennosti 3 .In the beginning of the twentieth century, Shchegolev collects and publishes all important reports of Pushkin's duel and death; he assembles the doctors' notes into the separate chapter and identifies them as one of the most important sources in the history of Pushkin's last days (Shchegolev 1987:143). Later, the duo " doctor vs. sick writer " appears in the studies on medical history (I will discuss this corpus of texts later in this paper) and in the monographs belonging to the field of cultural studies, the authors of which use specialized medical literature, personal recollections of doctors and patients, as well as medicine-related reminiscences from the works of fiction (Reyfman
