In 1870, a band of Blackfoot Indians called the Piegan Indians was massacred by the United States... more In 1870, a band of Blackfoot Indians called the Piegan Indians was massacred by the United States Army as a literal form of punishment against violence and agression of the Indians in Montana. The Army had targeted Chief Mountain Chief's band of Piegan's for this punishment, but instead massacred the peaceful band lead by Chief Heavy Runner. Around 173 Blackfeet Indians were killed on January 23, 1870 near the Marias river in Montana, including 53 women and children, while another 140 women and children were left without supplies in the -43 degree January weather.

Helen Hunt Jackson's A Century of Dishonor, self-published in 1890, began to bring attention to the troubles of the Indian and the atrocities of assimilation to which they were subjected. 1 This work didn't gain much traction at the time. What did gain attention was the analysis of the western frontier as a whole. Frederick Jackson Turner presented his Frontier Thesis just three years later. His characterization that the Indians needed "management" reflected the current political attitudes of Indian assimilation. 2 A few women writers continued to examine the Indian struggle through the 1930s and 40s, but these works also didn't gain much attention.
