The identity, structure, and morphology of prepared nanocrystalline zinc oxide was investigated by various techniques such as IR, PSA, SEM, TEM, and XRD. The reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of available literature and scientific principles. It was proposed that the surfactant hexamethylenetetramine played a dual role. First, it produced a basic environment that is necessary for the formation of Zn(OH) 2 . Second, it coordinated with Zn 2C and thus stabilized the aqueous Zn 2C . Zn(OH) 2 dehydrated into ZnO when heated in microwave and subjected under ultrasonication. Here, the chemical and physical effects of high intensity ultrasound have been utilized for the preparation or modification of nanostructured zinc oxide. The results showed that using ultrasound sonication is green and cost effective compared to conventional wet chemical method for ZnO nanoparticle synthesis.

Transforming growth factor β Type III receptor (TβRIII/Betaglycan) is a transmembrane proteoglycan co-receptor that can exist with or without heparan and/or chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan (GAG) modifications in cells, with established roles in development and cancer. Our studies here demonstrate that TβRIII, independent of its TGFβ co-receptor function, regulates canonical Wnt3a signaling by controlling Wnt3a availability through its sulfated GAG chains. Our findings reveal, for the first time, opposing functions for the different GAG modifications on TβRIII and suggest that Wnt interactions with TβRIIIs heparan sulfate chains result in inhibition of Wnt signaling, likely via Wnt sequestration, while the chondroitin sulfate GAG chains on TβRIII can promote Wnt3a signaling. These studies identify a n...

Isoprenoids and phenylpropanoids are the major secondary metabolite constituents in Ocimum genus.... more Isoprenoids and phenylpropanoids are the major secondary metabolite constituents in Ocimum genus. Though enzymes from phenylpropanoid pathway have been characterized from few plants, limited information exists on how they modulate levels of secondary metabolites. Here, we performed phenylpropanoid profiling in different tissues from five Ocimum species, which revealed significant variations in secondary metabolites including eugenol, eugenol methyl ether, estragole and methyl cinnamate levels. Expression analysis of eugenol synthase (EGS) gene showed higher transcript levels especially in young leaves and inflorescence; and were positively correlated with eugenol contents. Additionally, transcript levels of coniferyl alcohol acyl transferase, a key enzyme diverting pool of substrate to phenylpropanoids, were in accordance with their abundance in respective species. In particular, eugenol methyl transferase expression positively correlated with higher levels of eugenol methyl ether i...

This study is performed for an emerging market context taking the case of Indian firms with a sample from 10 industries for the period 1990 to 2007. Our results support the evidence of trade-off theory in the Indian firms (contrary to the results found by Farhat, Cotei and Abugri 2006). The result is consistent for the overall sample as well as for different industries separately.

To determine how this peptide affects exocytosis, we used super-resolution stimulated emission depletion microscopy and structured illumination microscopy to study the anatomy of single vesicles in astrocytes. Smaller vesicles contained amino acid and peptidergic transmitters and larger vesicles contained ATP. Discrete increases in membrane capacitance, indicating single-vesicle fusion, revealed that astrocyte stimulation increases the frequency of predominantly transient fusion events in smaller vesicles, whereas larger vesicles transitioned to full fusion. To determine whether this reflects a lower density of SNARE proteins in larger vesicles, we treated astrocytes with botulinum neurotoxins D and E, which reduced exocytotic events of both vesicle types. dnSNARE peptide stabilized the ...

Distributed Human Computation (DHC) is used to solve computational problems by incorporating the ... more Distributed Human Computation (DHC) is used to solve computational problems by incorporating the collaborative effort of a large number of humans. It is also a solution to AI-complete problems such as natural language processing. The Semantic Web with its root in AI has many research problems that are considered as AI-complete. E.g. co-reference resolution, which involves determining whether different URIs refer to the same entity, is a significant hurdle to overcome in the realisation of large-scale Semantic Web applications. In this paper, we propose a framework for building a DHC system on top of the Linked Data Cloud to solve various computational problems. To demonstrate the concept, we are focusing on handling the co-reference resolution when integrating distributed datasets. Traditionally machine-learning algorithms are used as a solution for this but they are often computationally expensive, error-prone and do not scale. We designed a DHC system named iamResearcher, which solves the scientific publication author identity coreference problem when integrating distributed bibliographic datasets. In our system, we aggregated 6 million bibliographic data from various publication repositories. Users can sign up to the system to audit and align their own publications, thus solving the co-reference problem in a distributed manner. The aggregated results are dereferenceable in the Open Linked Data Cloud.
The concept of warranties involves an increased shift of the burden of construction quality contr... more The concept of warranties involves an increased shift of the burden of construction quality control, product performance and maintenance from the owner to the contractor. The expected benefits of warranty projects such as enhanced product quality and service life could be offset by their higher construction costs. Using data from a state highway agency, this paper evaluates the costs and benefits of pavement projects undertaken through warranty and traditional contracts in order to identify the more cost-effective practice. Effectiveness was measured in terms of average pavement condition and service life. On the basis of inflation-adjusted costs and other data, it was determined that warranty contracts generally have higher agency cost but lower user cost and superior pavements compared to their traditional counterparts. Also, over a relatively short analysis period of five years, the warranty contracts are 27-30% less cost-effective than their traditional counterparts. However, in the long term, the warranty projects were found to be 70-90% more cost-effective on the basis of service life, and 58-65% more costeffective on the basis of both service life and pavement condition. The study results suggest that the higher cost-effectiveness of warranty over traditional projects is more discernible when both cost and effectiveness are viewed over the entire treatment life rather than only a part thereof, and when both agency and user cost are used in the analysis. The paper identifies certain areas of the study methodology that could lead to bias in the conclusions and advocates for caution in selecting warranty/traditional contract comparison pairs. The commodities under investigation are: castor seed, gold, guar seed, maize, silver, soybean and soyoil. Traditional unit root tests as well as robust Variance ratio test are applied to check for departure from randomness. Unit root tests suggest presence of randomness in all price series and stationarity in return series. However, upon applying Variance ratio test, it is found that non agricultural commodities, namely, gold and silver spot as well as all three futures price series are random. Among agricultural commodities, spot and three futures of castor seed show randomness but guar seed follow mean reversion for all price series. Maize spot price and soyoil spot exhibit mean reversion but all three futures price series are random. This has implications for investment as well as hedging strategies.

Firstly tri-variate Johansen cointegration is run to see for the presence of long term cointegration. No co integrating vector is found among the three stock markets. Then Granger causality is run and it is found that Indian stock market granger causes Japanese. Japanese and US stock market seems to granger cause each other. Lastly tri-variate VAR is used to diagnose the return spillover between the stock markets. It is found that there is significant return spillover from Indian and US stock market to Japanese stock market. There is also significant influence of Japanese stock market on US stock market. However, there seems to be no return spillover on the Indian stock market from either the US or the Japanese stock market.
