Research paper thumbnail of Kabela as Local Content Enrichment for a Non Traditional Choreography at Gorontalo

Proceedings of the Unima International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities (UNICSSH 2022), 2023

Behind the ephemeral form and nature, it is necessary to investigate more deeply the rules and essential values, so that the understanding of the meaning of this dance is completely intact for the Gorontalonese as well as the Bolaang Mongondownese. This research is a starting point for mapping dance styles in eastern Indonesia, through strengthening local cultural values in northern Sulawesi in the construction of non-traditional choreographic concepts in Gorontalo. The research integrates the ethnographic techniques with methodical experiments in learning non-traditional choreography for the department of Pendidikan Seni Drama, Tari dan Musik at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Ethnographic techniques place field research simultaneously with literature studies, to create a qualitative-phenomenological analysis process that considers both emic and ethical data. The choreography process adapts Hawkins' exploration model as a guide for realising experimental works, which also creates an intersubjective understanding discourse process on the Kabela. The results showed that the presence of the Kabela is a reinforcer of the tradition of "makan sirih pinang" as a noble tradition of the Bolaang Mongondow people in welcoming guests, newcomers, or "others" who visit their area. The concept of non-traditional choreography makes sense of the meaning in the production of imaginative and sensory effects, so that the process of appreciation of the dance is active and dynamic. This process is spiral-circular: understanding one's own traditional art gives oneself the ability to understand the traditional arts of others, and it is by understanding others, that one's appreciation of one's own is deepened.

The dance brings the past and its mythological sphere into a dynamic of postmodern life. The imperative is seeking the nature of existence of Bedoyo-Legong Calonarang through hermeneutical appreciation in the work of creating, conceptual sphere, and spectacle representation. The use of the methods of philosophical qualitative focuses on to the existence and the aesthetic of the piece, as well as the ontological sphere attaches to the analysis foreground. Both artistic investigation and intertextual analysis are undertaken in hermeneutical plot of Gadamer's hermeneutics, with the methodical elements of interpretation, hermeneutic circle, holistic, historical continuum, comparation, and heuristic. The analysis of the choreographic concept is to identify the significant of Gadamer's hermeneutics in the understanding of temporality, aesthetic, tradition, and dialectic of the dance. The outcome is mainly a comprehensive understanding towards Bedoyo-Legong Calonarang which has achieved: 1) its innovative-artistic ontological existence brings to front the nature of the dance as "mode of being"; 2) such existence provides the dance with the aesthetic values that is ontological; and 3) the nature of the dance is as a matter of fact a critical respond to postmodernism as a counterbalance, if not a countermovement, for postmodern aesthetic. It is worthwhile to think, within the continuum of Gadamer's hermeneutics, of seeking an artistic process of choreography, which more intent to the philosophical reflection. The future generation of Indonesian choreographer should be more confident to respond traditional materials and indigenous elements, in order to have an innovative ontological artistic-spiritual artwork.

While young choreographers in Gorontalo are adjusting themselves in learning contemporary, they too need to appreciate traditional dance aesthetic, so they will have a clear concept while using ethnic elements in creating dance. One of the embodiments of North Sulawesi’s dance aesthetic is Dana Dana, developed in a limited way in Bolaang Mongondow. The similar dance is also existing in Gorontalo under the same name but slightly different in some components. As dance aesthetic is essential to construct the regional dance style, it is necessary to look further how the aesthetic of Bolaang Mongondow’s Dana Dana brings the distinctive features in the forms of choreographic development. Using a phenomenological approach integrated with creative-based choreographic, this research examined how the experimental and explor...

The conceptual foreground is drawn from the circumstantial analysis of a duality of human’s strategies confronting the difficult situation in their waits. “Waiting for Godot” (WfG), the biggest iconic of modern theatre, is the baseline to address the pragmatic understanding towards human condition and human self-reflection. The research aims to discover an alternative way bringing the abstract concept of human condition into a tacit understanding of the dance performance as well as the writing component. Both literary investigation and artistic-based research are processed simultaneously to discover the coherence, through which the creative process would find the equilibrium in both practical and academic. Encouraged by dialectic of Hans-Georg Gadamer, I believed that such specific manner is required to choreograph sufficient fusion forms in terms of Indonesian plurality. This research is to investigate the hermeneutic dimension of “Bedoyo-Legong Calonarang” as a dance piece that brings Javanese and Balinese classical idioms into Indonesia contemporary. I use the core motion of his hermeneutics to apply interpretative, holistic observation, and heuristics as well as philosophical qualitative method. Through identifying dialectical aspects in the conceptual sphere of artistic process and presentation of the dance, the result showed its merit to accommodate inter-subjective understanding in revitalizing traditional values.

Both literary investigation and artistic-based research are processed simultaneously to discover the coherence, through which the creative process would find the equilibrium in both practical and academic. The observation of WfG's dramatic tension leads the choreographic process in focusing kinesthetic exploration to represent 'body and mind'. The idea is manifested through the dance performance entitled "Soliloquies", which uses the presence of Balinese and Javanese elements as a starting point as well as the development of individual aesthetic experiences of the dancers. The results of the research generate distinctive movement vocabularies to convey its choreographic structure, while they also challenge an intercultural dialogue in the process of studio research. It draws the conclusion that such investigation could articulate the manifestation of movement-based approach towards Beckett's WfG, that is the absurd of human condition. It also brings out a hermeneutic sphere in the art process, which works for me, as a female Indonesian dancer, to reconstruct identity within Indonesia contemporary state.
