It has an important role in eliciting relevant information during patient interviewing, similarly, in shared decision-making or convincing patients of certain therapy options. The skills are also needed in delegating tasks or giving feedback to colleagues. Through simulated medical encounters, culturally appropriate assertive communication skills can be improved to tackle challenges in hierarchical healthcare contexts. Our comparative study analyses the results of a questionnaire survey of two simulation-based communication courses, where one explicitly aims to use assertive skills in clinical settings while the other implicitly encourages students to defend their opinions in doctor-patient scenarios. Blended-learning methods, support from clinicians and mentors in promoting self-confidence and self-esteem, constructive feedback from both simulated patients and the observers (linguists, psychologists), teamwork skills training and assertive communication techniques were applied to ensure the effectiveness of the courses. The article shares the verbal and non-verbal tools of assertive communication evaluated by the observers, and the self-evaluations of students, which focused on their own behavioural changes in terms of sense of responsibility, sense of failure and navigating between assertiveness and empathy.

Though, the differentiation of normal adaptive changes from pathological LVH can be challenging. 4-tiered classification (4TC) may discriminate better different forms of exercise-induced LVH providing three-dimensional information of the left ventricle (LV). Purpose, methods: The main objective of our study was to distinguish alterations between 2TC and 4TC examining 121 adolescent athletes with echocardiography. Moreover, these results were also compared to the matched LV parameters of 114 adult athletes. Results: Examining the 4TC allocation representing parameters (LV mass, LV mass/BSA, LV end-diastolic volume/BSA, concentricity) of the adolescent and adult athletes we identified significant differences (p< 0,05) between the different LVH groups and normal geometry, suggesting that the applied classification provides proper group distinguishing power. There were no significant differences between the cumulative training times of the different LVH groups (p >0,05). Furthermore, the BSA corrected LV parameters did not show any correlation with training time. Totally 25 athletes (22%) were reclassified in 4TC into completely different groups, highlighted the 6 athletes (5%) reclassified from normal geometry to concentric LVH and the 11 adolescent (9%) reclassified from normal to eccentric LVH. The reclassifications rate showed similar pattern in adult athletes. Conclusion: Based on all these data we assume that training time has no significant impact on the classification. Cardiac remodeling develops already in young age, and further training time has less impact on the adaptive changes. We prefer to apply 4TC in the routine echocardiographic examination of endurance athletes to specify a more sensitive and distinct screening method.

As a result, interdisciplinary simulation-based education is designed to advance clinical skill development, specifically in doctor-patient interactions. The Standardized Patient Program has been applied in American Medical Schools since the 1960s, implementing patient profiles based on authentic cases. At the University of Pécs, Medical School in Hungary, this model is being adapted to facilitate improving patientinterviewing, problem-solving, and medical reporting skills. The interdisciplinary program operates in Hungarian, German and English languages, utilizing actors to perform as simulated patients under the close observation of medical specialists and linguists. This innovative course is designed to train students to successfully collect patient histories while navigating medical, linguistic, emotional, and sociocultural complexities of patients. Experts in medicine and language assess student performance, offering feedback and providing individualized training that students might improve their professional and communicative competencies. This paper examines how this interdisciplinary course provides valuable opportunities for more efficient patient-oriented communication practices. Through responding to medical emergencies, miscommunications, and conflicts in a safe environment, medical students prepare to deal with a diverse patient context, that more qualified and empathetic health personnel may be employed throughout clinics worldwide.

Ehhez a leghatékonyabb módszer a valódi orvos–beteg szituációhoz hasonló helyzetek szimulációs gyakorlása.

The simulated patient (SP) programme at the University of Pécs Medical School aims to provide efficient help for educators and students alike in language for medical purposes, communication and clinical courses. The constructivist feedback methodological approach ensures that students in history taking classes learn from role-playing in simulated scenarios and the feedback offered from the simulated patient. Effective assessment includes the learners’ own reflection and the patients’ non-judgmental observation on perceived interpersonal communication skills, observed professional misconduct, students’ ability to cope in emotionally challenging situations, and suggestions for improvement. Giving feedback has to be offered regularly to enable improvement in medical communication and nurture self-confidence. Our questionnaire survey of the students who attended history tak...

It poses a significant socioeconomic burden in industrialized countries and has a profound effect on the quality of life of affected individuals and their families. Diverse immunologic pathways can lead to the clinical symptoms of cow’s milk protein allergy; some of the pathomechanisms are known in detail, but others need further elucidation. A comprehensive understanding of the development of food allergies and the features of oral tolerance could have the potential to unlock more precise diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic approaches for patients with cow’s milk protein allergy.

Individual and cultural valuations appear in the way farewell notes, media letters and other personal documents present self-destruction. These "messages", ideas about life, death and suicide are deeply embedded within the public context of culture too. In the present content analysis formal, syntactic and grammatical characteristic features, as well as speech patterns and verbal expressions of selected notes, samples have been investigated. Suicidal - fatal (n=49) and nonfatal group (n=31) of farewell letters were compared with the sample of a control group (n=33). Results have been discussed, interpreted and concluded. These appear to be useful and important not only in understanding of suicidal phenomenon and its psychodynamic background in clinical work or in suicide hotlines, but also in prevention, social-, and clinical intervention of self-destruction. The investigation of these new data may provide a much broader perspective in understanding suicidal process.

Therefore, it is crucial to develop communication and empathic skills of medical students through experiential role-playing at the Medical School. This study focuses on methods improving empathy of medical students in doctor (student) - patient (actor) simulated role-plays. The purpose of our research was to identify factors that promote the development and expression of empathy in medical encounters. We aim to investigate the language of clinical empathy: how medical students can use the language to build empathetic communication. The authentic case-based role-plays provide sociolinguistic tools for interactions and for expressing empathy as well as reassuring the patient’s emotions. Our study demonstrates how empathic communication skills form a more effective doctor-patient relationship, leading to greater patient satisfaction and better patient compliance. Keywords: empat...

Our aim was to examine the parameters for adolescent athletes (n=121, 15.1±1.6 years) compared to adult athletes and age-matched non-athletes. We explored the effects of influencing factors on the echocardiographic parameters. Significantly higher E/A (p<0.05) and e’ values (p<0.001) were detected in adolescent athletes compared to age-matched non-athletes’ and also adult athletes’ parameters. Significantly lower structural and functional right ventricular parameters (p<0.05) were detected in adult athletes. In adolescent athletes significantly higher right ventricular diameters, tricuspid S wave, right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic area values (p<0.05) were found compared to the matching parameters of non-athletes. We found significantly higher corrected tricuspid annular plane systolic excursi...

Background. To assess habitual postures as well as postures considered correct by dancers of different styles, and the intensity of their (low) back pain. To examine spinal functional status, strength and flexibility of core muscles necessary for correct posture and lumbar motor control skills. Our hypothesis is that lower back pain and deviation in the functional status of the spine are more common among dancers aged 9-18 than in the average population, or other sportsmen. Despite regular trainings, weakness is observed in muscles needed for correct posture. Methods. Our survey sample consists of members of three different dance genres. Groups examined include a classic ballet, a hip-hop dance and a ballroom dance group (n=92, mean age:14.15± 2.96). Examination of habitual postures and postures considered correct was performed by a ...
