The interactions involved a diverse range of actors, including Iberian monarchs and local sheikhs. These interactions went beyond mere political rivalries and encompassed struggles for spiritual authority in the Maghreb. This article examines the rise of the Saʿdian dynasty within both internal and international contexts, followed by an analysis of the rivalry between Morocco and the Ottoman Empire in the mid-century. This approach aims to provide insights into the complex dynamics among the Saʿdians, Wattasids, Zayyanids, Hapsburg Spain, Portugal, the Ottoman Empire, and Algeria during the 1550s. The text pays particular attention to the enigmatic assassination of al-Mahdī, the Saʿdian sultan, shedding light on overlooked aspects that are crucial for comprehending broader geopolitical frameworks.

Nonetheless, the three months of lengthy negotiations that culminated in the treaty of capitulations provide a valuable insight into the early modern Ottoman approaches to international negotiations and treatymaking. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha (1565-1579), Grand Vizier of Sultan Selîm II (1566-1574), was the principal protagonist of these negotiations on the Ottoman side. This article focuses on the encounters of the latter with Marcantonio Barbaro, Venetian bailo and François de Noailles, ambassador of King of France Charles IX and aims to provide a new perspective on their bargainings by emphasising the participants' points of view, achievements and failures, hidden agendas, as well as tactics.

In fact, the text of 1569 constitutes the model of most of the later examples granted not only to France but also, among others, to England the Dutch Republic. In this article, we will first revisit the previous agreements, ratified or not, between two powers so as to assess the peculiarities of the document under study.

If in this short article, emphasis is put on the forms of actions realized by the bandits and semi-autonomous recognized political actors of the Ottomano-Safavid frontier in the second half of the 16th century, this, on the other hand, should not conceal the presence of homologous patterns – hence their relationality – observable in other marginal configurations of the Ottoman Empire as well as in contemporaneous frontier zones elsewhere.
