Although it may not look like it, this community is still open to all those interested in anything Vader! Stories, pictures, icons, challenges, dicussions, questions, speculation...whatever floats your boat.
I ran across the mention of an article at Club Jade that was interesting. Apparently there was a "story thread" that got thrown out of the OT, according to producer Gary Kurtz:
This may be the Star Wars movie you're looking for
"The one story thread that got totally tossed out the window, which was really pretty important I think, was the one of Vader trying to convince Luke to join him to overthrow the Emperor. That together they had enough power that they could do that, and it wasn't him saying I want to take over the world and be the evil leader, it was that transition. It was Vader saying, "I'm looking again at what I've done and where my life has gone and who I've served and, very much in the Samurai tradition, and saying if I can join forces with my son, who is just as strong as I am, that maybe we can make some amends." So there was all of that going on in Jedi as well, that was supposed to go on. So the story was quite a bit more poignant and the ending was the coronation of Leia as the queen of what was left of her people, to take over the royal symbol. That meant she was then isolated from all of the rest and Luke went off then by himself. It was basically a kind of bittersweet ending. She's not his sister that dropped in to wrap up everything neatly. His sister was someone else way over on the other side of the galaxy and she wasn't going to show up until the next episode."
I'm intrigued with the idea of Vader approaching Luke in a different way. I know it's been done many times in fanfiction but I was surprised that it could so easily have ended up being canon. So there would have been more time of Vader being regretful that the couple of minutes we got at the end of Return of the Jedi and perhaps more interaction with Luke. And no twin sister Leia. I kind of like that idea too.
Has anyone read "The Life and Times of Obi-Wan Kenobi" by Ryder Windham? I've just finished it and there was quite a bit about Obi-Wan's thoughts about Vader before and after his fall, no big new revelations, it basically follows the storyline of the films. I wondered if anyone else had any thoughts about it.
There is an interesting picture/drawing of Darth Vader, minus much of his mask, on the back of a Force Unleashed battle pack containing Battle Damaged Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and two Shadow Guards. It's also on the back of the May/June 2008 Star Wars Insider with the picture of Vader being larger. Is it possible for anyone to scan these?
This should interest those of you who are fans of Darth Vader and are interested in his armored suit:

It's about a Star Wars Blueprint Collection coming in August.
"There are five blueprints in the box detailing the Death Star, Darth Vader (focusing on life support systems in his suit), R2-D2 & C-3PO, the Millennium Falcon, and various weapons."

The latest news from Del Rey is a trilogy book due out in August. The book includes James Luceno's Labyrinth of Evil, Matt Stover's Revenge of the Sith, and James Luceno's Dark Lord.
Nice news but I must confess when I first saw information about a Darth Vader trilogy, I had high hopes of some new material about our favorite Dark Lord.
One of the best recent Vader fics around is jedinemo's The Protege'. Chapter 7 is the latest to be posted. Vader, a younger Luke, a younger Anakin, Obi-Wan not dead, Leia,...what more could you ask for!

MERRY CHRISTMAS Maggie! If I'd seen your other post in time I would have tried to slip in a little Christmas something to cheer you up, sorry this chapter's taken so long to get posted.
There's a new community, blackpit_slums, that's started for the Coruscant Nights Trilogy, a series of books that picks up the story after the Jedi Purge. It's still unclear whether Vader will put in any appearances in them or will just be mentioned in passing. I'm not sure if these will be full-length books or something like the Last of the Jedi series. Either way, I'm sure they will be interesting, and the community's worth checking out for any Star Wars fan.

Summary: Has Darth Vader disappeared?
I just wanted to wish the rest of the meditation_pod members a Happy Halloween! We started ours early here with trick-or-treating held this evening. I saw more than one little Darth Vader, two even had beautiful red lightsabers. And I think I saw a Jedi, I wasn’t sure if he was Anakin or Obi-Wan though and didn’t want to reveal my ignorance by asking. Star Wars lives on!
I already posed this question to jedinemo, but I thought it was pretty relevant to this community as well.
Not so much in the OT, but definitely in the novels, we get Palpatine's irritation with Vader's 'inability' to recover from his injuries. We get the impression that Palpatine thinks Vader is weak. Vader attributes his (Vader's) decreased Force abilities on his injuries. Palpatine thinks it's all in Vader's head.
In RotS, we definitely get Palpatine salivating at the thought of his new apprentice being so powerful ...
DARTH SlDIOUS: You will not stop me. Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us.
It just makes me wonder, does that track? Obviously Palpatine's true power lay in his understanding of human nature and his ability to manipulate the hell out of any situation. But would it really be a boon to him to have an apprentice with considerably more raw Force potential than he possessed himself? My initial reaction is no, but I'd love to hear other thoughts.

Here are some excerpts from Aaron Allston’s Betrayal in which Lady Lumiya speaks of Darth Vader while talking to Jacen Solo.
I thought it was interesting to hear Lumiya’s opinions about Vader. Anyone else have any thoughts about it?
jedinemo has a new Vader story posted at her journal and at FF.N. If you haven't read any of her work you have really missed some good stories, she's previously written two Vader and Luke stories, Come With Me and That Which Remains. And I hope she doesn't mind me recommending her work here but I felt I needed to in case any Vader fans have somehow missed her work.
Here's the new story:
You can also find her previous stories listed there at her journal or look her up at fanfiction.net.
I have a question and it's sort of related to Vader and his children so I'm wondering if someone here might have some insight.
I know that the Jedi Order had an Acquisitions department and their mission was to find force sensitive children and bring them to the Temple for training. Given how some issues in GFFA are often glossed over, does anyone know if it has ever been stated whether or not the Jedi Council had the power to take children from their parents?
I believe it's addressed somewhat in the Rise of Darth Vader book with the Roan Shryne character. I think it's stated that his father wanted him trained, but his mother did not. But again, I don't remember if it said what would happen if both parents had objected.
Could the Jedi Order take children?
If anyone has an argument for either answer, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!

Characters: Firmus Piett, Darth Vader

Summary: Admiral Piett and Lord Vader share a night’s watch before the Battle of Endor.
Note: written for the community fanfic50: #018 Share
…
The Imperial Navy was quick in dealing out privileges to those of status and rank. Thus Admiral Piett rarely, if never, was on duty during the ship’s night cycle.
During nights like this, however, he found the stillness and quiet effectiveness of the night hours quite soothing. As he walked through the corridors and was greeted by the few he encountered, talked to them about current status and works and even private life, he thought to himself that this was probably the reason why he liked the nights so much: here he had a chance to interact with his subordinates, the lower officers and simple mechanics and maintenance staff.
Here is the other passage from The Empire Strikes Back by Donald F. Glut. It mentions Vader being in "his dim chamber" but I'm not sure that's the same as the meditation chamber or it's perhaps the outer room of it. I was surprised when I read this part...the writer has Vader being in great fear of the Emperor, so much that he was trembling. I always figured Vader would have a healthy "respect" for him, knowing what he's capable of but I just can't picture Vader shaking in his boots when he sees him. For one thing I'm not sure Vader valued his own life well enough to care if the Emperor done away with him, at least before he knew about Luke, and Anakin Skywalker never seemed to fear another being, it was always something else that tied him up in knots.
( Second passage from The Empire Strikes Back...Collapse )
There are only a couple of spots in the Empire Strikes Back novelization where Vader was in his meditation chamber. As far as I can remember, he was not there during A New Hope or Return of the Jedi. If anybody remembers differently, say so. There is not much about the chamber itself, mostly it's describing Piett's unexpected observation of a helmetless Vader, but that in itself is interesting.
( A passage from The Empire Strikes Back by Donald F. Glut:Collapse )
Even as I post this here, I'm certain that there is a probably a wookiepedia article on the subject but ...
What is canon?
I know I've read before that as far as Lucas (the man, not the company, I know it's hard to separate them at times) considers the movies canon, full stop.
But what about the EU materials? Is Dark Horse canon different from Del Rey canon which is different from Ballantine canon?
I know I read an article about the EU character of Ben Skywalker where some honcho at the publishing company made reference to the fact that George Lucas had been informed that they married Luke to Mara, but that they probably wouldn't tell him about Ben.
Wuh?
I realize that the sheer scope of the EU projects is a hindrance in and of itself. I have no idea how any one person or even department could keep track of all the details and how they contradict or interfere with each other from comic to book to movie, etc.
Do the publishing companies just pay their royalty fees to LucasFilm and then do as they please with the characters? It sounds like all of the plot lines are driven by the publishing companies rather than by LucasFilm.
I'm thinking about this specifically in regards to the many recent discussion of Vader's injuries. Quite obviously to me, the movies and the novels contradict each other. Many authors attempt to retcon events to make it all tie neatly together, but from my perspective it rarely works in a manner I find satisfactory.
Anyone have any insights?

Here is a passage from James Luceno's Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader:
( Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader excerpts...Collapse )
This passage describes some of Vader's injuries as well as the workings of his suit. It also talks of his feelings at being literally trapped in the armor and mentions the chamber he would like to build that jedinemo mentioned in her comment to a post.
I was really astonished at reading this again and realizing the severity of Vader's injuries. In Revenge of the Sith we saw how his arm and legs were amputated by Obi-Wan's lightsaber and then how he was severely burned. But this passage mentions injuries beyond that. Included in the passage is what indiefic said about his loss of hearing. This was due to the severe heat. But there's mentions of devices replacing his upper vertebrae too but not reasons for it and of various tubes and cables that entered his chest and throat.
It sounds as if Palpatine wanted him as dependent on the suit as it was possible to get. I'd like to hear other opinions about this and about his injuries. And remember, A New Hope was almost 20 years later. Do you think his condition would have improved by then due to medical advancements, either with Palpatine's knowledge or not?
Here are the other three passages from Steve Perry's Shadows of the Empire paperback:
( Shadows of the Empire excerpts...Collapse )
They give no information about the meditation chamber itself other than calling the top of it a "lid" which seems an odd word to use but I suppose it made sense to the author at the time. We do get some insight into Vader's thinking. He's really not changed much from the old Anakin, he deludes himself too easily, especially about his motives for finding his son.
The oddest thing while reading these was that he did have a desire to be a "normal" man again but seemingly never really tried to improve his condition except for the meditation sessions where he tried to heal his lungs. And too is the strange implication that if he could heal the lungs then he could be okay. So if he basically just needs something to breathe for him, then the rest of the armored suit is just that...armor for protection like the stormtroopers' armor. But I know I've read in other places, perhaps one is Luceno's book, that the suit was connected to his body in many different ways and wired to his heart and controlled his blood pressure and everything else. But in this book he seems to slip in and out of it with ease.
Okay, so the last question and posted excerpts got me thinking ...
This issue had bothered me for some time and perhaps someone in this group will have an answer. I often see in fanfiction works that when someone needs to be inside the meditation pod with Vader that they need special breathing equipment.
Why?
Granted, I'm not a medical professional and I know next to nothing about hyperbaric chambers, but why, why, why would a healthy human be harmed by a hyperbaric environment? Vader is human. What type of environment would he need that would be toxic to other humans?
Thoughts?
Here is an excerpt from Steve Perry's Shadows of the Empire:
( Shadows of the Empire, pgs. 47-49Collapse )
sammys_clown had posted a question asking which of the novels Vader's meditation pod or chamber had appeared in. Both indiefic and lux_adalric had suggested Shadows of the Empire. This excerpt is the first in the novel that speaks of a hyperbaric medical chamber that Vader uses. I am assuming it is the same as the meditation pod or meditation chamber or something similar from its description. I will post other excerpts from the book as I find them.
jedinemo also says that there are references to a "pressurized medical room" in James Luceno's Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader and also Vader wanting to build something in which he could remove his suit. I'll look for those passages also and post them.
I also want to go back through the novels of the films and see how much the chamber was mentioned in those.
If anyone has anything to add, please do! This community is always open to questions and discussions. Feel free to agree or disagree with any information. It's been awhile since I've read Shadows of the Empire and I was surprised at how some of my thoughts and interpretations of it have changed since seeing Revenge of the Sith. Maybe some of you feel the same.
Does anyone remember if Vader's meditation chamber or pod was mentioned or talked about in any of the novels besides those of the films? I was curious but it's been years since I've read some of the books and I thought maybe someone has a better memory than I do.

Darth Vader's meditation pod, or chamber as it is sometimes called, was a place the Dark Lord could remove his mask and armor. It also held a communications systems. One meditation chamber was located on the Executor and another, according to the novels, in Bast Castle on Vjun.
