This essay examines the dynamics of grace in John Wesley's thought as revealed in his use of earl... more This essay examines the dynamics of grace in John Wesley's thought as revealed in his use of early Methodist women as exemplary models of holiness in his published Journal, which he termed "patterns to the flock." The essay was delivered as a paper presentation at a Symposium held on May 16, 2014, at the Perkins School of Theology entitled, “Grace Works: Reflections on Divine Grace, Human Works, and John Wesley – Celebrating the Scholarly Contributions of Richard P. Heitzenrater.”

T... more This paper examines an underdeveloped category in John Wesley's theology of the means of grace. The term "general means of grace" refers to inward attitudes and practices of self-examination which nurture a virtuous spirit. As such, the general means of grace serve as a pattern for all the other, outward means of grace---providing the connecting foundation whereby they will be spiritually efficacious in the Christian life.
