The importance of hop-growing and winegrowing is based on the fact that they significantly influence not only the final product, but also the competitiveness in the successive industries of the product vertical. Similar influence within the examined industries is evidenced in the close interconnection with the above-mentioned (main) successive processing-part, and in the complicated position of the small growers. Differences are shown especially in the flexibility of reaction to the changes of demand for final products of the successive industries, and also in the position of both industries in the Czech Republic, and in the world.

Research paper thumbnail of Honey production competitiveness between the Visegrad countries analysis based on the relative comparative advantages indices

Ekonomìčnij časopis-XXI, Jun 10, 2021

The primary aim of this present study is to demonstrate the honey production and trade of the EU member states known as Visegrad Four between 2000 and 2018. Also an objective of this article is the calculation of the actual comparative advantages of the Visegrad Four in foreign trade in natural honey using the RCA (relative comparative advantages) indices. During the research and analysis, different international and EU Databases were used. Secondary data used in the analysis derive from the reports of National Apiculture Programmes, the European Commission and the European Committee and from the databases of Faostat, Trademap and the United Nations Comtrade Database. V4 countries account for about 25% of the total EU apiculture sector, and the cooperation of Visegrad Four countries in the field of beekeeping could make a major contribution to the competitiveness of the sector. Examining the import and export data, using RCA indices it was proved that Hungary has a comparative advantage in terms of natural honey, however the competitiveness of the beekeeping sector in the region depends on the common performance of all four countries. Due to the stability of the sector and the positive externalities, authors suggest the further support of the apiary in the region.

The situation is monitored in five selected EU countries: the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Research paper thumbnail of Attractiveness of Czech winegrowing and wine-production in the stage of adaptation to the united market of the European Union

Acta Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, Dec 10, 2014

The paper focuses on the viniculture sector in the Czech Republic in the stage of its adaptation ... more The paper focuses on the viniculture sector in the Czech Republic in the stage of its adaptation to the united EU-market. The period before the entrance of the Czech Republic to the EU can be characterized by an effort to develop the necessary resources for its quantitative and qualitative growth at the maximum possible level. Evaluation of this period comes from analysis of: legislature and governmental and EU laws, directives and measures, development of the area of vineyards, human resources and businesses, wine market in the Czech Republic and the European Union, financial support of winegrowing and wine-production, structure of wine production, and price of grapes. Legislature for this sector had been changed in relation to the legislature of the EU-the main impacts being in registration of vineyards, the ban on new planting. Area of vineyards was enlarged by about 7 thousand hectares, and the main focus in the near future will be directed to their renewal-because of the age of the vineyards and bad heritage from the past in terms of low investments. The size structure of business subjects changed as well. Production potential is 19.3 thousand hectares of vineyard, there is filed more than 18 thousand wine-growers and nearly 600 wine producers. There is a potential for 20 thousand jobs in this sector, and considering the limited production area of vineyards, this projects into a high influence on the character, and development level of these areas. Consumption of wine is gradually increasing (16.5 litres per habitant per year, as yet). Prices, which were found, are relatively stable in the period of focus, with differences between white and blue varieties. Whereas the financial support of winegrowing was focused on enlarging the area of vineyards, in the pre-accession period, it is redirected to the restructuring of vineyards, integrated production of grapes, and reproduction of vines, in the current period. Wine imports constantly outweigh the exports in volume and value. Prices of grapes have been stable, in the past three years, but the price in 2005 was negatively influenced by wine imports. The analysis is summarized using the industry attractiveness evaluation matrix. It evaluates the selected influences with regard to the wine-production industry, which is evaluated as not very attractive, especially due to the low profitability of winegrowers, excessive regulation, and differences in financial support in different EU-member states. winegrowing, wine-production, industry attractiveness, environment, adaptation Významným specifikem některých regionů České republiky je významná produkční role vinohradnictví a vinařství. The general focus in studies and focus of the controlling experts is mostly on the operational controlling. For the analysis of the normatives' controlling in Bavarian SMEs a primary research data set is used. The survey was aimed on Bavarian SME's in the machine building sector. We employ regression models for the assessment of significance of the influencing factors, which are causing the negation of the normatives' controlling. We use monthly hours worked in the normatives' controlling, percentage acceptance of the normatives' controlling, used normatives' controlling instruments and the number of employees working in the controlling department as the influencing factors. The empirical evidence shows significant results affecting Bavarian SME's-Acceptance (monthly capacity of the head of controlling department) was identified as a significant variable on a statistically significant level with the estimated coefficient of 0.217 in relation to the Hours (monthly hours of work capacity) of normatives' controlling departments, and Instruments (number of instruments used) were proved to significantly influence the Employees (number of employees in controlling department) with the coefficient of 2.099. With the growing importance of the ability of an organization to publicly demonstrate its success in reaching objectives and specifically in its societal impacts, the importance of setting normatives and their control will project into higher demands on the work capacity of the controlling departments.

Research paper thumbnail of Consumer Demand for Wine and Beer in the Czech Republic, and Their Mutual Influences

Acta Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2015

The paper analyses consumer demand for wine and beer in the Czech Republic in the period of 1991-... more The paper analyses consumer demand for wine and beer in the Czech Republic in the period of 1991-2013. The objective of this research was to evaluate the elasticity of consumption of wine and beer in reaction to a change of prices and further to a change in the level of a household income. Based on the dynamic models of the gross demand for wine and beer there were determined the coeffi cients of direct and cross price elasticity, and income elasticity coeffi cients. In accordance with the identifi ed sizes, respectively, a er evaluating their statistical signifi cance, there was carried out the economic analysis of observed demand functions. Analysis of demand functions has shown that the consumptions of wine and beer by the Czech households were not linked on a statistically signifi cant level, in the examined period. Dynamic model of the gross demand for wine showed a statistically insignifi cant sensitivity of wine consumption to a change of the household income. Wine consumption of Czech households was signifi cantly formed only by its price. Dynamic model of the gross demand for beer has shown that beer consumption by the Czech households responded signifi cantly only to change in household income. Whereas in the case of wine, there was identifi ed an infl uence of previous consumption on the current one, this was not confi rmed in the case of beer.

The paper concludes that a questionnaire survey with estimated response rate of 15-30 % is feasible under certain conditions and outlines a specific procedure of how to achieve that. The key of successful conduction of a survey was identified to be winning the trust of respondents (e.g. auspices of a professional association in the field) and appropriate way of addressing respondents (via the professional network LinkedIn, email and phone). Due to unpopularity of questionnaires, personal interviews seem to lead to a higher response rate. Offering the final results of intended research can be an appropriate motivational element for respondents. Based on the previous research, the paper also identifies optimal time of invitation of respondents for participation in a surve...

Microfinance banks (MFBs) serve as vehicles for economic growth and development in both developed and emerging markets. This study examines visionary leadership and its relationship to corporate social performance in selected microfinance banks in Nigeria. A purposive sample of 75 senior employees of microfinance banks who the authors believe can provide the best information to achieve the research objectives participated in this study. All 75 questionnaires were returned but only 68 were properly completed by the respondents and therefore used for the analysis. A twenty-one item questionnaire was used to measure the constructs of visionary leadership and corporate social performance. 7 items were used to measure visionary leadership and 14 items were used for measuring corporate social performance. A Five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 "strongly disagree" to 5 "strongly agree" was used to collect data. In analyzing our data, Pearson correlation and multiple regression techniques were used. SPSS 17 statistical software was employed in different analyses conducted. The result shows that an insignificant weak positive relationship exists between corporate social performance, employee satisfaction, environment and visionary leadership. In the same direction, customer satisfaction and community have an insignificant weak positive relationship with visionary leadership. The authors, therefore, recommend that managers and executives should focus more on other factors that have a positive impact on corporate social performance since visionary leadership has only 5% impact on corporate

This application shows, that even though the Czech Republic have entered the European Union, in that period, the changes that happened did not have a major influence on the position of selected competitors. Authors also discuss the applicability of selected approach, which does not seem to automatically suggest particular actions to be taken and has to be considered a help in decision making. Interpretation of a particular position in the map, and its development in time can provide an important input for strategy formulation.
