El estudio muestra, por primera vez, la detección de Hepatozoon procyonis en prociónidos, Procyon... more El estudio muestra, por primera vez, la detección de Hepatozoon procyonis en prociónidos, Procyon lotor de Costa Rica. Para caracterizar los gametocitos, se tomó muestras de sangre de mapaches infectados naturalmente. Los gametocitos concuerdan con Hepatozoon procyonis, los cuales fueron observados en neutrófilos del citoplasma, resultando su morfología similar a la reportada en mapaches de todas las Américas.

The objective of the present study was to compare the results of blood smears and Polymerase Chai... more The objective of the present study was to compare the results of blood smears and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of Ehrlichia canis in canine blood samples from the Central Valley of Costa Rica. For this reason, the results of the blood smears to detect intracytoplasmatic inclusions, results of a nested PCR, and in few cases the serological results of 300 blood samples, obtained from dogs suspected of suffering ehrlichiosis, from different veterinary clinics, were analyzed. Also the following information was obtained from each blood sample: geographical location of the veterinary clinic, clinical signs, race, gender, and age of the dog. Of the total of 300 blood samples analyzed 147 (49.0%) yielded positive results to E. canis in the nested PCR. In 178 (59.3%) samples, introcytoplasmatic inclusions were detected in leucocytes through blood smears, however only 103 (57.9%) were confirmed as E. canis positive in PCR, whereas in 44 (36.0%) from the 122 inclusions neg...

Para caracterizar los gametocitos, se tomó muestras de sangre de mapaches infectados naturalmente. Los gametocitos concuerdan con Hepatozoon procyonis, los cuales fueron observados en neutrófilos del citoplasma, resultando su morfología similar a la reportada en mapaches de todas las Américas.
