So, what have I been reading in the world of manga lately?

I just finished Petshop of Horrors, and when I read the very last page I actually squealed. Like, out loud and everything. Had anyone else been within hearing range, it would have been highly embarrassing.

( SqueeCollapse )

But of course, it wouldn't do for me to actually keep any of my money instead of spending it on manga volumes, so as soon as one series ends, naturally I must be falling in love with another. And my new shojo love is called Hanazakari no Kimitachi E.

I am only two volumes into Hana-Kimi, because after I bought Vol. 1 on a mad impulse (i.e., I saw the cover and went, "Ooh, threesome!"; read the summary and went, "Ooh, gender-bending!"), I waited a long time before caving and buying Vol. 2. I was afraid I wouldn't love it as much--or maybe that I would love it too much.

I don't know what other people get out of this manga, but what I love so much about it is not just the hint of shonen-ai, or the token gay characters, but the fact that even the characters who are supposed to be straight aren't very good at it. Not to mention that Ms. Nakajo can't seem to make up her mind whether or not anyone is actually convinced by Mizuki's crossdressing. It's just so, so much gender-bending fun for everyone involved, and Sano, Mizuki and Nakatsu ping my OT3-radar liekwoah. <3

To try and convince people to read this manga, here's some eyecandy:

I kind of suspect that the actual series doesn't quite live up to the promise of some of these fanservice images, but hey. That's what the world inside my head is for! For now, I'll just look at the pretty and pray for fanfiction.

[ETA: Yes, I'm embracing the shame and downloading Advent Children. 7 hours and 27 minutes to go! Oh, and go read today's Penny Arcade.]
