Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Video mediated Instruction on Students’ Achievement, Attitudes and Motivation in Learning Kiswahili Proverbs in Kenya: A Literature Review

In Kenya, there is poor achievement by students in Kiswahili proverbs at the KCSE examinations due to the negative attitude towards proverbs instruction that are not motivating. In this paper, the authors review the literature on video-mediated-instructions drawn since 1990. The authors also review literature on how videomediated-instructions affect students' achievement, attitudes and motivation in learning. The author also discusses how Kiswahili proverbs are taught in Kenya. Although video-mediated-instructions affect students' achievement, attitude and motivation, no studies capture its effect on Kiswahili proverbs teaching. Therefore, this review identifies a gap for future research to find out if the future of teaching Kiswahili proverbs in Kenya lies in videomediated-instructions.

In an attempt to inform evidence-based practice, this study examined the influence of videos mediated instructions on students' motivation towards learning Kiswahili proverbs in a sample of secondary schools of equal ability in Nakuru County, Kenya. A Solomon Four quasi-experiment research design was used. The 436 students who participated in this study had a mean age of 16.2 years (SD = 0 .89) with a nearly equal sex distribution. The 43 five-point Likert type motivation items used were reduced into three dimensions: affective, behavioral, and cognitive by use of factor analytic methods. Regression analyses highlight equivocal effects of technology on these three dimensions of motivation while teacher experience was a notable confounder. Pre-test effects were also evident. The study has important implications for promoting more ambitious teaching methods.

The study employed survey research design. The study targeted 13 secondary schools with a population of 2855 students of Nyahururu, Laikipia County. Stratified sampling was used to select 10 schools for the study. The sample comprised 320 students and 10 teacher-counselors. Two questionnaires were used to collect data from students and teacher-counselors. Data was analyzed using statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages were employed. The study established that demographic factors do influence peer pressure among secondary school adolescents. The study recommends training of teacher-counselors on how to deal with demographic factors that influence peer pressure among secondary school adolescents. Keywords : Peer Pressure, Adolescent, Guidance and Counseling, Demo...

Scholars agree that Kiswahili language and literature would be incomplete without proverbs because they contain wisdom and advice concerning life. Proverbs form an integral part of the language and therefore the need to integrate them in learning. Kiswahili proverbs are taught mostly by explaining the meaning of each of the words making up the proverb. As a result, the performance of students in Kiswahili in KCSE in Kenya is wanting. One such document that is a target of forgery in Kenya is the national identity card. Research has shown that thousands of national identity cards in use today are not genuine. An understanding of the challenges that make identity card systems vulnerable to fraud may help in developing specifications for secure identification systems. This study investigates design and functional weaknesses inherent in Kenya’s national identity card system and proposes potential areas for further research. A survey was carried out on Kenya’s second generation identity card system which is currently run by the department of National Registration Bureau. System administrators and users of Civil Identification System, Automatic Fingerprint Identification System and Production System were interviewed. In addition, all processes u...

By solving the limitations of fixed instructional technologies, mobile technologies have received ready acceptance in the education place. The purpose of the study was to investigate the student technological preferences, their levels of utilization as well as attitudes toward mobile technologies. The target population was 30,752 third year undergraduate students in Kenyan Universities. The participants (n = 375) were selected by systematic random sampling. They provided data using self-fill questionnaires. Results indicated that the smartphone was the most popular mobile device; Tecno was the most preferred handset brand; and Android was the most popular operating system. Safaricom was the dominant service provider amongst the student population. Regarding the levels of utilization of mobile technologies by students, it was concluded that though students use thei...

However, there is a lack of adoption of this emergent mode of advertising among micro-enterprises. This study examined the underlying reasons for this lack of adoption using an exploratory factor analytic study based on an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model with the choice of technology as an additional factor. Data was collected in a survey involving 304 micro-enterprises by means of structured questionnaires and interview schedules. The study findings validate the technology acceptance model and also reveal that the choice of technology is an important factor influencing the intention to use location-based mobile advertising by micro-enterprises.

In the recent past, workers would respond to such demands through learning by correspondence. When the Internet and e-Learning emerged, it received widespread accolade as a solution to the challenges experienced by distant learners. The technology was also seen as an opportunity for educational institutions to leverage their technological uptake to benefit regular students. However, desktop computers and Internet connectivity, which were the drivers of e-learning technologies, were expensive, bulky and scarce. So when mobile technologies emerged, educationist saw an opportunity for addressing the limitations associated with correspondence, "e" and tethered learning. Mobile devices being cheap, portable and reliable received widespread acceptance and possession. So, educators, hardware designers and program developers started to design hardware and applications that would infuse learning content into the devices. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the potential of mobile technologies in the education market place, highlighting global initiatives and trends. The paper will also review how universities around the world, Africa and in Kenya have oriented themselves for learning with mobile technologies. The study was a documentary analysis of virtual documents stored electronically for access through the Internet, text books, archival repositories and encyclopedias. The study observed a significant high global mobile ownership and usage rates, but was able to demonstrate that despite its pedagogical advantages, the use of the technology for learning purposes at university level is still at the infantry.
