The goal is to understand the extent to which aspects of Freire’s thoughts can intersperse with concepts and practices of popular, community, and alternative communication in Brazil. The study is based on bibliographic research on Freire’s work while reflecting on some of the principles of the education for liberation, particularly those embedding the praxis of popular communication in social movements. This paper concludes by arguing that principles such as ‘communication as dialogue’, ‘critical consciousness’, the ability to become a ‘subject’, ‘education as a practice for freedom’, ‘connection to reality’, and ‘social transformation’ lie prominently in the concept and practices of popular and community communication.

The objectives are to identify the main theoreticalassumptions of cybercultur@ in the mark of dynamic restructuring of communication in contemporarysociety, to place the issue of the presence of popular communication, and alternative community incyberspace, and to examine whether there is relevance to relate the concepts of cybercultur@ and itsapplicability to the study and practice of this type of communication in Brazil. This is a first approach based on literature research and unsystematic observation of manifestations as they happened, and through virtual networks as well as the tracking of media coverage of conventional and alternative media. We conclude that civil society has shown its strength, and exposed the existence of a universe of communication larger than the mainstream media.

It aims to discuss the issue of scientific research in the epistemological perspective, to consider the importance of scientific methodology in its methodical and technical dimensions, as well as to reflect on aspects of the research carried out in Latin America and more specifically in Brazil. It is a theoretical approach based on a non-systematic and non-exhaustive literature review. The existence of thematic and methodological diversity is examined, as well as the apparent tendency of the research to focus on the novelty, mainly in regards to elements related to technology, as object of study. The urgency of strengthening research in Communication is also considered, both theoretical and empirical, and the necessary advance in the design and description of research methods and techniques when presenting results and analyzes.

We take into consideration communication constructed in this universe and in its educative/communicative process. The study is based on bibliographic research. Communication is part of the processes of mobilization of popular social movements throughout history. It pervades citizenship rights, understood as a first, second, third and fourth generation's right. The third represents an advance in the conception of citizenship, by evolving to the perception of a collective right. However, maybe it is time to take a step forward, that is, to consider the human rights to communication as the fifth generation, that is, the communicational dimension of citizenship. As a conclusion, we find that community and popular communication expresses a rich diversity of practices and contributes to enhancing the citizenship status as it builds and recognizes a new generation of rights.

Communication is expressed in personal and interactive group processes and through technological channels. It permeates social dynamics but also has its own specificities.
