Strategien und Mechanismen medialer Kommunikation (Antigypsyism in the German Public Sphere. Strategies and Mechanisms of Media Communication) by Markus End, translated into English by William Templer. It is intended to provide journalists and those working in the political sphere with a quick overview of the findings of the study. The introductory sections and the conclusion of the study were slightly revised for this short version. Initially it provides a brief overview of previous debates on the representation of Sinti, Roma and others stigmatized as "Gypsies" in the German media. The following section explains the approach here to criticism of antigypsyism. The findings are then briefly presented organized in terms of the strategies and mechanisms that the author was able to find and analyze in the framework of the investigation.

The approaches adopted in this volume range from critical theory, semiotics, discourse and cultural analysis to intersectional perspectives. Many contributors here argue for a conceptual understanding of this phenomenon that goes beyond the notions of anti-Romani racism or Romaphobia, suggesting a shift in focus towards the prevailing prejudice in majority societies. The controversial core theme discussed in this book is the appropriateness and the theoretical understanding of the term “antiziganism” and its analogue “antigypsyism.” The essays explore empirical findings from the news media, film, literature and theatre, as well as contemporary and historical realities in Germany, Kosovo, Norway, the former Ottoman Empire, the Soviet Union, Romania, Sweden, and the US. The striking historical and geographic continuity of stereotypes and the different modes of antiziganist practice comprise a central theme here, along with a focus on the counter-discourse of Romanies. Since comprehensive literature on this topic in Romani studies has, to date, been rare, this volume provides necessary readings for the debate among scholars, policy-makers and activists.

Using a close analysis of a single picture – appearing as harmless at first glance – and through the reconstruction of its various interpretational contexts and semantics the paper identifies mechanisms used in stereotypical media coverage of “Roma”. This qualitative analysis draws on media analysis of antigypsyism as well as on research of photographic construction of the “gypsy” in order to analyse the contemporary visual regime of “Roma” in Germany. As it portrays “the Roma” as a fundamentally different and socially deviant group, this visual stereotyping is shown to be an integral element of the persistent antigypsyist ideology, deeply embedded in German society.

These approaches are based on the narrative of a “gypsy threat” that results in practices of securitizing those perceived as “gypsies”. Common practices include the continued collection of “ethnic” data as well as warnings to the general population of an alleged threat of “gypsy crime”. The chapter argues that this narrative is interwoven with a specific visual police regime of the “criminal gypsy” as a sub-regime of the more general visual regime of “the gypsy”, further supporting practices of racial profiling and social exclusion.
