Research paper thumbnail of Two-folded implementation of a 12-pulse TCR with dissimiliar transformers for a ladle furnace: reactive power compensation and power system redundancy

Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting., 2004

This paper is devoted to the design and implementation of a 12-pulse thyristor controlled reactor... more This paper is devoted to the design and implementation of a 12-pulse thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) system, which constitutes a low-cost solution to the reactive power compensation problem of a ladle furnace in Iskenderun iron and steel plant (ISDEMIR). Design objectives and elimination of 5th and 7th harmonic current components produced by 6-pulse TCRs are met by connecting two sets of 6 kV, 6 MVAr TCRs to the 34.5 kV ladle furnace bus by the use of two separate converter transformers with delta- and wye-connected secondaries. The effects of dissimilarities between the two sets of 6-pulse TCRs on the harmonic current content of the resulting 12-pulse TCR system are also presented in this paper. Both reactive power compensation and power system redundancy objectives are met by using two separate and dissimilar transformers instead of a single transformer with identical Δ-and Y-connected secondaries for connection to 6-pulse TCRs, resulting in a two-folded design. One of these transformers is chosen as a sufficiently large unit with two identical Δ-connected secondaries to supply the ladle furnace in emergency or during maintenance periods of main transformer. In normal operation mode of the resulting ladle furnace power system, the 12-pulse TCR implemented in the project gives quite satisfactory results in reactive power compensation and nearly meets harmonic standards currently used in the country.

Sizing of the CMC module , the number of H-bridges (HBs) in each phase of the CMC, ac voltage rating of the CMC, the number of paralleled CMC modules in the T-STATCOM system, the optimum value of series filter reactors , and the determination of busbar in the power grid to which the T-STATCOM system is going to be connected are also discussed in this paper in view of the IEEE Std. 519-1992, current status of high voltage (HV) insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology , and the required reactive power variation range for the T-STATCOM application. In the field prototype of the CMC module , the ac voltages are approximated to sinusoidal waves by the selective harmonic elimination method (SHEM). The equalization of dc-link capacitor voltages is achieved according to the modified selective swapping (MSS) algorithm. In this study, an L-shaped laminated bus has been designed and the HV IGBT driver circuit has been modified for the optimum switching performance of HV IGBT modules in each HB. The laboratory and field performances of the CMC module and of the resulting T-STATCOM system are found to be satisfactory and quite consistent with the design objectives. Index Terms—Cascaded multilevel converter (CMC), H-bridge (HB), modified selective swapping (MSS) algorithm, selective harmonic elimination method (SHEM), transmission-type STATCOM (T-STATCOM).

—This paper deals with the development and implementation of a current-source-converter-based sta... more —This paper deals with the development and implementation of a current-source-converter-based static synchronous compensator (CSC-STATCOM) applied to the volt-ampere-reactive (VAR) compensation problem of coal mining excavators. It is composed of a ±750-kVAR full-bridge CSC with selective harmonic elimination, a low-pass input filter tuned to 200 Hz, and a ∆/Y-connected coupling transformer for connection to medium-voltage load bus. Each power semiconductor switch is composed of an asymmetrical integrated gate commutated thyris-tor (IGCT) connected in series with a reverse-blocking diode and switched at 500 Hz to eliminate 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th current harmonics produced by the CSC. Operating principles, power stage, design of dc link, and input filter are also described in this paper. It has been verified by field tests that the developed STATCOM follows rapid fluctuations in nearly symmetrical lagging and leading VAR consumption of electric excavators, resulting in nearly unity power factor on monthly basis, and the harmonic current spectra in the lines of CSC-STATCOM at the point of common coupling comply with the IEEE Std. 519-1992. Index Terms—Current-source converter (CSC), harmonic elimination, power quality, static VAR compensator (SVC).

Research paper thumbnail of Various induction generator schemes for wind-electricity generation

Electric Power Systems Research, 1992

In this paper, various generator types and control systems employed in wind energy conversion sys... more In this paper, various generator types and control systems employed in wind energy conversion systems have been reviewed with particular emphasis on systems including induction generators. Advantages and disadvantages of these systems and relative generator sizes are also discussed. Variable shaft speed schemes employing induction generators have been studied more closely and the important aspects of the findings are emphasized. Throughout the paper, the importance of maximizing the conversion efficiency is stressed. The parameters controlling the energy conversion are identified. Simple methods have been developed to determine the optimum parameters for a constant speed synchronous generator wind energy conversion system and a variable speed squirrel-cage induction generator wind energy conversion system. This last configuration is shown to have advantages from the viewpoint of energy production as well as some other aspects including simplicity and robustness.
