While several of these sites were identified through the scatter of surface material culture, others show terrain modifications in the form of anthropogenic mounds and levelled areas. Researchers have gathered valuable information regarding these features' functionality and construction processes through large-scale excavations in archaeological sites with anthropogenic mounds, paleoenvironmental studies and remote sensing analyses. These anthropogenic mounds represent a long-term process of formation and were used for a variety of purposes ranging from agricultural to ritual activities. While excavations and small-scale remote sensing can provide a myriad of data to improve our understanding of these archaeological sites, a regional perspective is needed to map the relationship among archaeological sites with and without terrain modifications, to better understand the Indigenous cultural patterns in their regional environment. In this regard, the primary objective of this paper is to explore to what extent these archaeological sites were related to the environment and each other. This was achieved by correlating archaeological data with a set of archaeologically recognized important environmental variables using advanced spatial statistics. The results provide important insights to understand the underlying pattern of archaeological sites in this region and its relationship with the environmental setting.

Through an expansive range of essays that look at Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, this volume brings a broad range of regions into conversation. The contributors focus on nuanced, comparative exploration of the processes and practices of creating, maintaining, and transforming cultural place making within pluralistic Spanish colonial communities. The Global Spanish Empire argues that patterned variability is necessary in reconstructing Indigenous cultural persistence in colonial settings. The volume’s eleven case studies include regions often neglected in the archaeology of Spanish colonialism. The time span under investigation is extensive as well, transcending the entirety of the Spanish Empire, from early impacts in West Africa to Texas during the 1800s. The contributors examine the making of a social place within a social or physical landscape. They discuss the appearance of hybrid material culture, the incorporation of foreign goods into local material traditions, the continuation of local traditions, and archaeological evidence of opportunistic social climbing. In some cases, these changes in material culture are ways to maintain aspects of traditional culture rather than signifiers of new cultural practices. The Global Spanish Empire tackles broad questions about Indigenous cultural persistence, pluralism, and place making using a global comparative perspective grounded in the shared experience of Spanish colonialism.

The North region of Hispaniola is one of more referenced by the archaeology and the historiograph... more The North region of Hispaniola is one of more referenced by the archaeology and the historiography of the Caribbean. However, their constant presence within them texts own of both disciplines not obeys to a deep and consistent knowledge of all moments of its history. The present study constitutes a reappraisal of the role of the interactions between a plurality of indigenous peoples that inhabited this area during the pre-Columbian period. That aspect it converts in the way to understand some of the peculiarities that distinguished this region respect to others regions of Hispaniola and of the West of the Caribbean. From that perspective, archaeological research also surpasses traditional diachronic conception in the study of the indigenous settlements to concentrate on a synchronous perception, which highlights the competition, transculturation, and syncretism derived from own multicultural mosaic of pre-Columbian Caribbean.

Presencia, legado y estudio, 2016

The issue of the legacy and presence of indigenous cultural elements in today's Caribbean societi... more The issue of the legacy and presence of indigenous cultural elements in today's Caribbean societies has been repeatedly addressed by the History and Social Sciences of this region.

This first volume of the series Los indígenas más allá de Colón has as essential objectives to develop the analysis of some of the theoretical and methodological edges with which the subject of the legacy and the indigenous presence in the Greater Antilles has been focused; as well as to emphasize in critical reflections that prioritize a "rediscovery" of these individuals and communities, from the approach of different sociohistorical situations, and from the handling data of multiple disciplines. The study of indigenous presence and legacy is examined from disciplines such as archaeology, history, ethnography, anthropology, literature, as well as from the combination of some of them. The book emphasizes the presentation of positions that lead to a different way of studying and understanding the indigenous legacy, which aims to contribute to a better visualization and integration of this cultural component in the different Caribbean ethnicities. In this sense, it prioritizes the analysis of paradigmatic examples that include the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and feeds on the criteria of relevant researchers, whose reflections set guidelines in the analysis of the subject and undoubtedly can become tools to promote critical thinking and to impact in the homework of improving our world.

This place is a basic reference for the study of communities associates to Lithic and Archaic age . This paper reviews the archeological data of the site and the history of its investigation. It discusses the need of an analysis on the site that surpasses its image of primal space and its early temporal reference, in order to build the assessment of other cultural components present in the location. The report of these suggests different kinds of interaction between pre-Arawack groups, and situations of continuity and construction of social memories correlated to the history of the site and to the peculiarities of its surroundings.

For this reason that place is a basic reference for the study of the archaic groups. Also due to its location and potential link with other important archaic sites, and because possesses contexts that reflect diverse types and moments of pre-Arawak’s occupations, and even ceramic use. This paper revises the archaeological data of Levisa 1, the history of its investigation and its implications in the knowledge of the archaic societies in Cuba and the Caribbean. We discusses how the methodological and theoretical changes more than the incorporation of new data or a detailed and deep analysis of the available information have determined the understanding of that space.

Analyzes how despite the weakening of the speech that insists in see the society as an all and them national identities as unique and uniform, great part of the institutions and the ¨intelligentsia¨ continues acting- by comfort, longing, or convenience- under schemes of old socio-cultural standards. Is possible tender a bridge of understanding between social actors so distanced? is the great question that guide the analysis of the state of didactic communication teacher-student (center of the process of teaching-learning) in the conditions of the current Dominican university. As a result, theoretical and practical instrument which proposes the book no poses the influence on passive and formal element as a curriculum, but into something more concrete, human, dynamic and essential to the process of teaching-learning: the didactic communication in the light of the specific context in which teachers of higher education unfold. This implies that, rather than conclude displaying a problem, it is concluded providing measures for detection and possible solution of communication problems that causes the generational gap between professors and students.

This interview offers a personal and intimate approach to one of the most important exponents of the Dominican artistic creation of the last decades: Thimo Pimentel. Through his testimony, who was winner of the National Award of Plastic Arts granted by the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic in 2016, reveals his motivations, his concerns, his love for archeology and his passion for study and the understanding of one of the fundamental roots of Dominican culture: indigenous cultural heritages.

While archaeological material may not always be visible on the surface, particular settlement patterns may be identifiable by a topography created through cultural action: earthen mounds interchanging with mostly circular flattened areas. In northern Hispaniola, recent foot surveys have identified more than 200 pre-colonial sites of which several have been mapped in high resolution. In addition, three settlements with topographical characteristics have been extensively excavated, confirming that the mounds and flattened areas may have had a cultural connotation in this region. Without the availability of high resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, a photogrammetric approach using UAS (unmanned aircraft system, commonly known as drones) can fill the knowledge gap on a local scale, providing fast and reliable data collection and precise results. After photogrammetric processing, digital clearance of vegetation, and extraction of the georeferenced DEM (digital elevation model) and orthophoto, filters and enhancements provide an opportunity to visualize the results in GIS. The outcome provides an overview of site size, and distribution of mounds and flattened areas. Measurement of the topographic changes in a variety of past settlements defines likely zones of habitat, and provides clues on the actual dimensions and density of living space. Understanding the relation of the mounds and adjacent flat areas within their environment allows a discussion on how, and for what purpose, the settlement was founded at a particular location, and provides clues about its spatial organization.

This sediment-filled cutoff meander is located in close proximity to pre-Colonial archaeological sites and a Colonial urban hub. It provided a nutrient-rich floodable locus for agricultural activities for indigenous communities and for the first introduction of Old World crops and cattle in the Americas. Integration of paleoecological proxies revealed the formation of a clear-water body surrounded by a palm-rich forested landscape around 1100 cal yr BP. Changes in the drainage system were linked to human-driven deforestation, which also changed the composition of the vegetation and fungal communities around the site between AD 1150 and 1500 (800 and 700 cal yr BP). Pre-Colonial modifications of the landscape were primarily the result of fire-use and small-scale clearings. Crop cultivation developed between AD 1250 and 1450 (700–500 cal yr BP). Within decades after Columbus' arrival in Hispaniola in AD 1492, the first impacts of European colonization included the abandonment of indigenous sites and the introduction of Old World domesticated animals. During the 15th and 16th centuries the area underwent intensive land-clearing that allowed for larger scale crop cultivation. An increase of aquatic vegetation points to sediment-filling around AD 1700 (250 cal yr BP). At that time, cattle breeding expanded and rapidly provoked eutrophication while, concurrently, monocultures became regionally established. This paper provides a framework of past environmental dynamics and offers an opportunity to place archaeological findings in a context of natural and anthropogenic change.

As part of the evaluation studies of a possible impact on the archaeological cultural heritage, specialists from the Museum of the Dominican Man carried out a first recognition of the space that would be modified by the Rincón Bay tourism project of the company INICON, SA This first recognition was developed on May 7, 2009 and its objective was to approach or familiarize with the area that would be intervened, as well as to visualize the areas of greatest archaeological interest according to the recognized trend on the use of spaces and ecological contexts by the indigenous groups (caves, mangroves, rivers, hills or mounds, alluvial valleys, etc.). During this first approach, an attempt was also made to collect oral information among the inhabitants of the area about the presence of archaeological objects (little faces, lightning stones, caves with signs of rock art), among other cultural indicators.
A second intervention at the site focused on a meticulous archaeological survey with the aim of locating and registering settlements or other areas of archaeological interest in the Bahía de Rincón area, Samaná peninsula. This second intervention took place between June 11 and 20, 2009. Within the objectives of the prospecting, in addition to locating possible settlements, it was also contemplated to carry out the necessary diagnoses and recommendations in order to guarantee conservation, rescue , or the mitigation of settlements that were located. In that case, the particular characteristics, the location, and the level of impact that they would receive from the tourism development project would be taken into account. The costs of the first visit as well as the prospecting project itself were covered by the company INICON, SA.
