I research terrorist ideologies. Much has been written on why people become terrorists; I focus on how terrorist organizations-- particularly of the Islamist milieu-- attract recruits. My work is informed by extensive experience on the ground throughout the Middle East that, coupled with my Arabic language skills, affords me an in-depth familiarity with the region's nuanced landscape.

Terrorists have in the past targeted food supplies and Islamic State has demonstrated an interest in disrupting food production on a global scale. MANPTS should coordinate with farmers in Salinas to 1) provide students with experience in this relevant field and 2) enhance food security.

Islamic State has reportedly acquired radioactive materials in Iraq and may seize more elsewhere (if it has not done so already). Despite their limited scope, radiological attacks are appealing to Islamic State because 1) they demonstrate advanced technological capability and 2) access to contaminated areas may be restricted for years. Belgium’s lax security procedures are especially worrisome.

Although the regulation of chlorine is too lax to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, the consequences of a chlorine gas attack can be mitigated with preparation.

Specifically, culture as described by Livermore generally exhibits: low influence over religious groups, moderate influence over ethno-nationalist groups, and high influence over tribal groups.
