Chapter 26
“Good news!” Garrett announced as he walked into Speed’s room three hours later. Devon looked up from his position curled up in the chair by Speed’s bed. “According to your friend’s CT scan, there’s no swelling in his brain.” Garrett smiled.
Tony chose that moment to approach the room. “He awake yet?” He asked, stepping into the room and finding Speed still asleep.
Devon shook his head. “Not yet. Said I’d call.”
“He’s sustained trauma.” Garrett explained. “His body is shut down right now to begin healing.”
“And you are?” Tony asked.
“Dr. Flynn. You can call me Garrett.” Garrett shook Tony’s hand.
“I’m off for the next eight hours.” Tony looked over at Devon. “Why don’t you go home, eat dinner, freshen up and all that.
Devon ran a hand through his hair and nodded. “Yeah.” He started toward the door of Speed’s room, twitching a half-smile at Garrett on his way out.
Tony sighed, sitting by Speed’s bed. “Hey, Speedy.” He gently took Speed’s hand and cupped it in his own. “The team and I are working on catching the bad guy for you.” He leaned over so he could whisper in Speed’s ear without being overheard. “I love you.”

Devon returned to the hospital a few hours later, fed and freshly showered, carrying two Tupperware containers. He poked his head into Speed’s room, making sure Tony was still with him and then pulled back when he heard footsteps approaching him.
“Devon.” Garrett smiled as Devon turned around.
“Hey, uh,” Devon shifted a little. “I wasn’t sure if you’d eaten yet or… whatever… so…” He held up one of the Tupperware containers. “I, uh… brought food.”
Garrett took the container. “You brought me food?” he asked, amused. “You know we have a cafeteria.”
Devon scrunched up his face. “This is healthier.” He looked up at Garrett. “And identifiable.” They laughed. “Anyway, I’m gonna-” Devon pointed to Speed’s room.
Garrett nodded. “Alright.” He held up the container. “Thanks for dinner.”
Devon shrugged. “Not a problem.” He brushed at a few strands of hair that had fallen into his face. “I’ll see you around.” Garrett patted Devon’s shoulder as he passed by to go to his office. Devon slipped into Speed’s room with smile. He found Tony sprawled in his chair sound asleep. Tony snorted and jerked awake. “Hey.” Devon greeted as Tony blinked up at him blearily. “Go home, Tony. Get some real sleep.”
“But-” Tony argued.
“You won’t catch the bad guy if you haven’t slept.” Devon shooed him out of the chair. Tony sighed. “I won’t let him be alone. I promise.” He handed the second Tupperware container to Tony. “Go home, have dinner and get some sleep.”
“But-” Tony sighed and took the container, examining the contents through the side.
“Tony,” Devon placed his hands on Tony’s shoulders, “if he wakes up while you’re at home I will call you, okay?” Tony nodded. “Okay.” He gently prodded Tony toward the door. “Go take care of yourself, or you won’t be of any use to anybody. And nobody will be happy if you don’t catch the bastard that hurt Speed.” Once Devon had convinced Tony to go home and take care of himself, he sat in the chair closest to Speed’s head and curled up. He played with Speed’s hair a little before gently taking his hand. The clock ticked away, one hour… two hours, Devon waited for Speed to wake up and listened to the machines around them. Devon was almost asleep when the door opened. “Thought I told you to go home.” He mumbled.
Garrett laughed a little. “I’m still on duty for another five minutes.”
“What?” Devon lifted his head and looked up at Garrett. “Oh, hey.” He smiled sleepily.
“Just thought I’d return this.” Garrett held up the Tupperware before handing it to Devon. “You cook that?” Devon nodded. “It was good. Really good.” Garrett smiled. “I think you’ve spoiled me from ever eating the cafeteria food again.”
Devon grinned. “Yeah? Did my job then.”
Garrett sat in a chair next to Devon. “How’s he been doing?” He asked, indicating Speed.
“Good.” Devon sighed. “As far as I can tell.” He brushed his thumb over Speed’s hand.
Garrett shrugged out of his lab coat, finally off the clock. “And how about you?”
Devon ran his free hand through his hair, dislodging a good portion of it from its ponytail in the process. “Been better, you know?” He glanced over at Garrett. “He’s one of my best friends. Hell, he is my best friend.” He paused. “I just- I hate this! I-” He pulled the band out of his hair. “God, I hate hospitals… no offense.” He scrubbed his fingers through his hair, causing it to stick out a little.
“None taken.” Garrett shrugged. “I don’t particularly like them either.” He whispered with a smile. “So,” he began, looking at Devon and raising an eyebrow, “are you and him… you know…”
“No.” Devon shook his head. “I tried once upon a time.”
“Hmm.” Garrett fell silent, watching Devon out of the corner of his eye.
“So,” Devon nudged Garrett with his elbow, “how long you been a doctor?”
“Would you believe eight years on Sunday?” Garrett shook his head. “I hardly believe it myself.” He returned the nudge. “What about you?”
“Me?” Devon bit at his lip. “I’ve never been a doctor.” He grinned and Garrett chuckled. “No, in all seriousness, I’m a chef.”
Garrett rolled his eyes. “I never would have guessed.” He teased. “What with that meal you brought me.”
“Yeah, well,” Devon shrugged, “it’s in my DNA. I like to feed people.” He scratched at the back of his head, shuffling the Tupperware around on the floor with his foot. The Tupperware slipped away from his foot and bumped into Garrett’s shoe. “Sorry.” He bent to pick up the container. Garrett snatched it up and handed it back with a smile. He regarded Devon for a moment.
“You look tired.” Garrett motioned to Devon’s face. “You want some coffee? Least I can do in return for dinner.” He paused. “You probably want to sleep, I-”
“Coffee would be great.” Devon smiled. “Small cup is fine.”
“How do you take it?” Garrett asked as he stood.
“Cream and sugar.”
“Alright then.” Garrett gathered up his lab coat and headed for the door. “Back in a few.” He walked down the hall to the vending machine where he put the money in for a cappuccino. The hot coffee poured into the paper cup, steam rising. Garrett grabbed the cup when it was done filling, popped a lid on it, and slipped it into a cardboard sleeve. He walked back to Speed’s room to find Devon curled up in the chair and fast asleep. A smile crept across his face and he set the coffee on the mobile hospital tray. Devon let out a light snore. Garrett went to a cabinet and pulled out a blanket which he draped over Devon’s lanky frame. “Sleep well, Devon.” He whispered as he turned out the room’s overhead light.

Devon awoke in the morning to find he’d been covered by a blanket. He smiled and snuggled farther into the warmth.
“Comfy?”
Devon nearly jumped out of his skin, only to be confronted with a smiling Tony who was standing on the other side of the bed stroking Speed’s hair. “Well, I was.” He mumbled as he stretched.
“How’s he doing?” Tony asked, watching Devon take a sip of the cold coffee that had been left for him.
“About the same.” Devon replied. “Heart rate seems better today.”
“Thanks for sitting with him, Devon.” Tony looked up at him wearily.
“You don’t have to thank me, Tony. I’m happy to be here for him.” Devon yawned to bring oxygen to his brain. “Just wish it wasn’t in a hospital.”
“Yeah.” Tony glanced at his watch and sighed. “I need to head in to work. I think we’ve almost got him.”
Devon nodded. “I’ll keep an eye on Speed. Go catch the bastard for us.” Devon narrowed his eyes slightly. “I just want to take a crack at the guy.”
Tony smirked. “Get in line.” He set his mouth in a firm line as he turned to leave.
“Tony.” Devon called. Tony turned around. “He’ll be okay.” Tony nodded grimly and walked out the door. Devon sighed, took a sip of coffee and looked over at Speed. “What are we going to do with him?” He teased.
“How’s our patient today?” Garrett asked as he walked in and grabbed Speed’s chart from the end of the bed.
“He seems better.” Devon offered, watching Garrett record Speed’s vitals on the chart. “Shouldn’t he be awake by now?” He asked quietly and took another sip of coffee.
Garrett looked at Devon before walking over to sit next to him. “Soon I’d think.”
Devon rested his elbows on his knees, blanket slipping to drape over his legs. “I hate seeing him here.” He closed his eyes, trying to hide the tears that threatened to make themselves known. Garrett placed a hand on Devon’s forearm. A shifting noise drew their attention to Speed’s bed.
Speed blinked a few times before whispering hoarsely. “Where am I?” His eyes settled on Devon and Garrett. “What happened?”
