genesis_aweigh | name: Mark Alexanderage: 22rank/branch of military USN Dep Recruit, shipdate 16 Dec 2008interests/hobbies Photography, Writing, JRPG's, Aviation, Computerstype of music/favorite artists: There are two kinds of music - good music and bad music. I like the first kind. For those who beg specifics though, my favorite artist of all time is Van Morrison. My name is Mark Alexander and I am currently a US Navy Delayed Entry Program (DEP) Recruit living in Auburn, AL. I took the oath of enlistment on 2008 May 30 and I will begin my active duty service on 2008 Dec 16 at 0530. My program is Airdeck Job Group - I will be working towards my rating as an Aviation Boatswains Mate in either Handling, Equipments, or Fuels. My first preference is Handling. I am also preparing to run the Atlanta Marathon on 2008 Nov 27.I am a semi-pro photographer and avid racquetball player in my free time, if I am not writing or wasting time online. My portfolio and all of my other works can be seen on Flickr, username FullMetalGenesis. Spending several years of my youth in Hawaii means I am a closet weeaboo (favorite series is Full Metal Alchemist.) This is partly why my first choice for placement once I have entered the fleet will be the USS George Washington in Yokusaka, Japan. Hawaii was also where I was introduced to the martial arts, and I am an aspiring Judo-ka. I was once a drummer, though I haven't really touched my sticks in a year or two.If you want to read my mind, read anything by Robert Heinlein. The two books most specifically applicable would be Starship Troopers and Time Enough for Love. After those, read The Complete Collection of Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson.(1 comment | Leave a comment) |

I'm not actually In any form of the military, but I have a few questions. My dad recently died. due to his service in the Army, the VA hospital paid for a military funeral. Most of the ceremony made sense, but what I didn't understand. After the Taps, and after the folding of the flag. the honor guard soldier hugged the flag. Why do they hug the flag? name: Januaryage: 21rank/branch of military [if applicable]: OS3 (E-4), USCGinterests/hobbies [not necessarily military-related]: Reading! Drawing, painting, TotalFark, Battlestar Galactica (the new series), C-130s (more specifically the CASPER system), laughing, and otherwise having a good time.type of music/favorite artists: Alt rock, rock, classic rock, blues, some oldies. Tool, Counting Crows, Marvin Gaye, Jonny Lang, Johnny Cash, Depeche Mode, Dave Matthews Band, AC/DC, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Massive Attack, Spin Doctors, Stevie Ray Vaughn. To name (more than) a few.I work at a Coast Guard Air Station here in Kodiak, Alaska and it's been an eye-opening experience. I love working around aircraft (we have three frames - HC-130H, HH-60J, and HH-65B/C) and especially working in Operations. I tend to see more around officers (LT [O-3] and up) than enlisted, but they're a great bunch. Outside of work, I read entirely too much -- my favorite author is George R. R. Martin, followed closely by Robin Hobb and Neal Stephenson. I play with my Wacom tablet when I'm inspired, mainly to digitally paint sketches I've done whenever the urge hit me to draw. And that's enough of me for tonight!Feb. 26th, 2007 @ 09:36 pm(Leave a comment) |

Well, I decided to be on the Honor Guard and Saturday was my first funeral. It was pretty nice, once the people got there that is. For about 2 hours me and 2 other guys were sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing, wondering where the hell the hearse was. I ended up being the bugler. "But Joe, You don't play the bugle. How were you able to play Taps?" you might ask. Well, the trick is that they have recording of Taps on a machine that is fitted inside the bugle, so you can be totally tone deaf and retarded with brass instruments but it comes out flawlessly with nobody knowing the wiser... unless of course you read this.So I played my heart out, so to speak, and shortly afterwards the funeral ended. An old woman came up to me and commented on how well I played, to which I thanked her and nodded. Probably shouldn't expose the tackiness to the grieving. So that's the way it goes. One of the other guys was a bugler at a funeral a few months ago, he said someone walked up to him and said "You played so beautifully that it sounded like a recording". I snorted. And here's a picture of me from after the funeral.... Damn I'm hot Jul. 3rd, 2006 @ 01:04 am(3 comments | Leave a comment) |

Apparently, judging by the shield, the winner of the Expert Field Medical Competition is the one true highlander. I think at the end the winner absorbs the powers of all the defeated medicsMay. 16th, 2006 @ 06:59 pm(Leave a comment) |
