Research paper thumbnail of U-Pb ZIRCON DATING OF MIDDLE EOCENE CLASTIC ROCKS FROM THE GERCUS MOLASSE, NE IRAQ: NEW CONSTRAINTS ON THEIR PROVENANCE, AND TECTONIC EVOLUTION

The Gercus Molasse in the Iraqi segment of the north-eastern Zagros Thrust Zone provides an ideal example of foreland system evolution with respect to the transition from passive margin to the accretionary complex terrene-flexural foreland basins. The DZ U-Pb age spectra from the Gercus Molasse suggest that the foreland sediments either influx from multiple provenances or are the result of recycling from the accretionary complex terrane. During pre-accretion, however, the radiolarite basin (Qulqula Radiolarite, 221 Ma) located along Arabian passive margin likely acted as an intermediate sediment repository for most or all of the DZ. Representative DZ U-Pb measurements revealed that the Gercus clastic rocks fall into several separable age population ranges of 92-102 (Albian-Cenomanian), 221 (Upper Triassic), 395-511 (Cambrian), 570- 645 (Neoproteroz...

The X-ray diffraction and infrared methods are used to determine the chemical formula of cured material which is Na8Al6Si6O24(OH)2.2H2O. The CEC values do not correlate with that of SSA values, where for uncured kaolin the CEC have increased from 6.52 to 89.13 meq/100g for the cured kaolin or synthetic hydroxysodalite; on the other hand, the SSA values have decreased from 87 to 10 m 2 /g. An adsorption experiment shows that the expansion of the framework of hydroxysodalite is due to the replacement of Na + by Pb 2+ ; moreover, about 91% of Pb is effectively removed. To get optimum removal, the solution must be buffered to about pH=4.5. ــــــــــ ــ ــــــــــــــــ ـــــــــــــــ ــــــــــ

Sr model ages of (80 – 110) Ma for three o phiolite suite samples are concordant with previous K-Ar ages of (97 – 118) Ma and may indicat e ophiolite formation and/ or serpentinization above an intra-oceanic suprasubduc tion zone of island-arc affinity (fore-arc) during the Albian – Cenomanian. A profound Rb-Sr ag e variation of (150 – 770) Ma is due to the effect of mélange phenomenon on ophiolitic serp entinites (imbricate), tectonically associated with intraoceanic suprasubduction zone (~ Late Maastrichtian) of Walash volcano – sedimentary sequence of island-arc affinity. The Sr and εNd isotopic composition suggests that the source of serpentinite is enriched-upper m antle, which with time had develop...

Therock suite in the studied area ranges from calc-alkaline to alkaline (i.e., Ga8-Ga9).The New reconnaissance SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages of GA8 GA9 reveal twoepisodes of Palaeoproterozoic inherited zircon growth:11953±39 Ma cores.2ca. 1777±28 Ma rims. This provides evidence for the ancestry of terrane(i.e. crystalline basement).which had been pervasively overprinted by Mesoproterozoic thermal eventsthat facilitate the growth of zircon rims. The cathodoluminescence (CL) imagesshow no evidence of the zircon growth during Tertiary magmatism. X-ray diffraction studies have proved that kaolinite is the dominant clay mineral, the mixed layer illite/ smectite is randomly interstratified and rich in K-poor illite. Based on x-ray pattern decomposition of 001 reflection in conjunction with the chemical analysis of the clay fractions, it has been found that there is a difference in K replacement by H2O between illite of the southern parts, having the formula of [H2O1.2K0.3Al4(Al0.3Si7.7)O20(OH)4], and the illite of the northern parts [ H2O0.9K0.6Al4(Al0.6Si7.4)O20(OH)4]. Based on illite/ smectite composition there is a variation in pH of the deposi-tional environments and the intense weathering between northern and southern parts of the Formations. The variations have been deduced from the clay mineral assemblages. ــ ـــــ ـــــــــــــــــــــــــ ــــــــ...
