This summary of existing research provides several key insights, which are of interest to potential interns as well as educators. For students, the literature suggests that unpaid internships are different from their paid counterparts in a variety of ways and pose certain risks that paid internships do not. On an institutional level, this paper documents the unique legal environment surrounding the unpaid internship and notes the unique liabilities program administrators may face if they fail to act with caution.

Based on a grounds-up study, this paper utilizes a storyline approach (Miles & Huberman, 1994) to present interview data obtained from interviews with elite informants (IEIs) of the host company and its archival data. Evolution of capabilities, both substantive and dynamic, are captured in the findings section. Of the seventeen interviews, seven subjects were location heads and ten corporate executives. Interviews with corporate executives included questions pertaining to their functional specialty as well. Finally, implications for future research and practice are discussed.

The survey was emailed to 890 venue professionals. There were 74 unique venue marketing professionals who responded (8.3% response rate) and answered most of the 55 questions covering various topics about the use, staffing, and perceptions of social media. The insights from this paper should assist entertainment and event venue professionals in comparing their priorities when it comes to social media use. The findings will also be helpful to anyone who might be responsible for the marketing of an artist or concert by shedding light on the benefit of integrating social media efforts with the venue or promoter. In addition, educators in the music and entertainment industry should benefit from an increased awareness of the strategic use of social media and shed light on the opportunities to prepare students for jobs in this area.

This article describes an integrated writing project used to enhance student writing and industry knowledge in the entertainment management curriculum at Missouri State University. Rationale for starting a student-generated publication will be discussed, along with the complete editorial process used to publish a weekly online magazine. It will also reveal preliminary student feedback about the integrated writing project, and make recommendations for improvements. After reading this article, educators should be able to launch a similar online publication using the editorial model described.

Yet, the question remains: Are these customers (i.e., the fans) satisfied? More specifically, what are the variables that drive satisfaction with an event? If an event collects and analyzes customer satisfaction data, its management is better positioned to make staffing and process adjustments in an effort to improve customer service. If an event does not measure customer satisfaction, managers end up merely hoping their customers are satisfied. Despite its importance, few academic researchers have examined event customer satisfaction overall or the factors that influence it. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to outline the importance of customer satisfaction at sports and entertainment events, discuss the challenges that events face, with regard to measuring customer satisfaction, and develop a theoretical model of sports and entertainment event customer satisfaction. In doing so, researchers will have a cohesive framework to guide future empirical investigations.

Few would disagree that the professional team owner using the venue receives major benefits (such as increased revenues from new suites, amenities, etc.). However, there are widely varying opinions on the benefit to the community in which the stadium/arena is located. A number of economists have contended that a stadium or arena does not have a positive net economic impact on the community. Additionally, social and political activists lament the use of public monies to subsidize a private corporation (the team), considering the added traffic congestion and the local government’s ability to take private land from citizens (via eminent domain) to build the venue. Moreover, the lifespan of stadiums and arenas appears to be shortening as professional teams continually voice their preference for a new stadium or renovating their ex...

Just as musicians have opportunities to go direct to the market with their music, an author has an opportunity to reach and engage an audience directly like never before. This paper demonstrates, through an exploratory case study, how authors can use scientifically proven persuasion techniques to influence visitors to reply to their online requests. These requests often originate from the author's social media platform, and come in the form of asking the visitor to like a social profile, comment on a blog, provide a review, share a link, join the tribe, or buy a book, among others. After a brief summary of the publishing sector, the author defines what a social media platform is using a Social Media Framework refined by social media expert Michael Hyatt (Hyatt 2010c, March 25). This will be followed by a review of persuasion research and Cialdini's six principles of social influence (2008). Finally, we examine some of the elements of a successful social media platform and draw conclusions on how these features may influence a response to one of many requests.

Specific organizational development interventions have been developed to improve quality, increase job satisfaction, and reduce costs in response to increased competitiveness in a global economy. Common among most interventions is the goal of improving quality by involving employees in the process. This paper relies on developments in the “new sciences”, which includes chaos, complexity theory, self‐organizing systems, and evolutionary systems, as a way of both approaching change in organizations and understanding organizations as evolutionary systems. These “new” perspectives denote a move away from the Newtonian model which is characterized by reductionism to understanding underlying relationships which create change in the operations of systems. The applicability of these “new sciences” is explored through a case study of change which occurred during the implementation of a quality program in a care‐giving institution. The first portion of the paper presents the explanatory elements of evolutionary systems and their applicability to understanding change in an organization. The second portion of the paper explores the conditions under which such a change can take place. Overall, this paper uses concepts from the new sciences to examine how organizational change in a care‐giving institution emerged.

While there is considerable evidence that social media has been used effectively by Fortune 500 companies, it is not known how social media is administered and perceived among managers of arenas, stadiums, performing art centers, and convention centers.
