It demonstrates the perennial appeal of studies that aim to shine light on the ekklēsia in its earliest phases. But the current interest is novel in focus, for in previous centuries most Christians thought of Judaism as a legalistic and arid religion that paled by comparison with Christianity. Many Christians now admire Judaism and are eager to trace their own tradition back to such a respected source.

The 2013 volume of Introduction to Messianic Judaism, edited by David Rudolph and Joel Willitts, ... more The 2013 volume of Introduction to Messianic Judaism, edited by David Rudolph and Joel Willitts, consists of two distinct sets of articles. 1 The first contains essays dealing with the contemporary Messianic Jewish movement and authored by leaders of that movement. The second set includes articles by Christian scholars on exegetical and theological topics related to Messianic Judaism. The pieces dealing with the twenty-first century reality of the Messianic Jewish movement are of special importance because they defy stereotypes which dominate not only popular opinion but also academic discourse. These essays reveal a diverse and dynamic movement whose relationship to traditional Judaism and evangelical Christianity is a matter of intense inner debate. While as a whole it continues to be shaped by evangelicalism, postevangelical trajectories which identify with Jewish history and tradition appear to be ascendant. In October 2012, the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement approved (without a dissenting vote) a responsum on the halakic status of Messianic Jews. In its opening description of the Messianic Jewish movement, the document treats the missionary organization "Jews for Jesus" as the prototypical expression of Messianic Judaism and views the founder of that organization-Martin (Moishe) Rosen-as the seminal figure in the movement's emergence: This idea [i.e., Messianic Judaism] was originally promulgated by Martin Rosen in 1973. Rosen was born a Jew but converted to Christianity and became a Baptist minister. He led a mission to convert other Jews, but when he found that they were not responsive, he came up with the idea that the impediment to Jews accepting Jesus was their reluctance to give up their identity as Jews and become "Christians." Jews for Jesus was his new tactic for converting Jews. 2

Dr. Boccaccini deserves particular recognition, for in the course of five graduate seminars over the past three years he has shaped in large m~asure my vision of Jewish thought in late antiquity and my understanding of the role of the various methodologies which can be used to explore this thought. The good news (euangelion) of the crucified and risen Messiah was proclaimed first to Jews in Jer... more The good news (euangelion) of the crucified and risen Messiah was proclaimed first to Jews in Jerusalem, and then to Jews throughout the land of Israel. In Jerusalem Crucified, Jerusalem Risen, Mark Kinzer argues that this initial audience and geographical setting of the euangelion is integral to the eschatological content of the message itself. While the good news is universal in concern and cosmic in scope, it never loses its particular connection to the Jewish people, the city of Jerusalem, and the land of Israel. The crucified Messiah participates in the future exilic suffering of his people, and by his resurrection offers a pledge of Jerusalem's coming redemption. Basing his argument on a reading of the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of Luke, Kinzer proposes that the biblical message requires its interpreters to reflect theologically on the events of post-biblical history. In this context he considers the early emergence of Rabbinic Judaism and the much later phenomenon of Zionism, offering a theological perspective on these historical developments that is biblically-rooted, attentive to both Jewish and Christian tradition, and minimalist in the theological constraints it imposes on the just resolution of political conflict in the Middle East.
