Fifty P. aeruginosa strains isolated from the lower respiratory tract specimens of the patients who acquired LRTIs in ICU were included in this study. P. aeruginosa strains were isolated from tracheal aspirate (27), bronchoalveolar lavage (14) and sputum (9). The susceptibilities of the isolates were investigated by the disk diffusion method. Multiplex PCR assay was carried out for the detection of 13 antibiotic-resistance genes. Antimicrobial resistance rates of the isolates were found high and the highest resistance rate of the isolates studied was determined against to mezlocillin (50%) followed by norfloxacin (48%), ciprofloxacin (46%), meropenem (40%). Fourty-three isolates (86%) were determined to carry one and more resistance genes. NfxB gene was most often determined in the genes that were investigated. The significant relation between the resistance to cefepime, piperacilline/tazobactam and the mexC gene, that between the resistance to mezlocillin, piperacilline/tazobactam, ceftazidime, cefepime and ampC genes, and that between the resistance to ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and oprJ, oprN and nfxB genes was identified. Resistance caused by genes for carbapenemases, aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes and other mechanisms were not identified in this study. Understanding the prevalence and mechanism of antimicrobial resistance in P. aeruginosa may help to select empirical therapy for nosocomial LRTIs due to P. aeruginosa in our ICU.

Methods; After determining the cafes and tea gardens which water pipes are consumed in, 250 samples were taken from water pipes. After samples were decontaminated and homogenised, they were stained with the method of Erlich Ziehl Neelsen (EZN) and were examined for acid-fast bacilli (ARB). For cultures of the samples, Lowenstein Jensen (L-J) media (BioMerieux, France) and BacT-ALERT MP (BioMerieux, France) were used. The nitrat reduction, niacin accumulation and catalase tests were made for identification of the strains isolated. Results; In our study, in 9 (3,6%) of 250 samples ARB were detected. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) were isolated from 27 (10,8%) samples by L-J media and from 75 (30%) samples by automated system. There was growth in both L-J as well as automated system in 24 (9,6%) samples. Thereby while isolating NTM in 78 (31,2%) of 250 samples, in none of them M. tuberculosis complex was isolated. Conclusions; It was thought that NTM strains might be in the tap water added into the water pipes or might be contaminated by infected users. Water pipe consumption found objectionable because of isolation of NTM in our study as NTM strains increasingly cause illness in recent years besides the many agents of infectious diseases especially M. tuberculosis.

A 51-year-old man was admitted to hospital with the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. Thoracic wall resection with lobectomy was applied and empyema has developed after prolonged air leakage. B. bassiana was isolated in pleural fluid. The patient improved without antifungal therapy after thoracotomy with securing of air leakage.

This study assessed the influence of the new method on the students’ success by obtaining feedbacks from the students. Study Design: The study included Term III students who took Microbiology practices by both methods in two successive years; that is, Basic Microbiology of the second term with the former method, and Clinical Microbiology with the new method. Student feedbacks were obtained by means of a 17-item Likert scale. Ninety-eight percent of the students (138/141) responded to the questionnaire. Results: The questionnaire was found to be reliable (Cronbach a=0.8677). Student feedbacks were highly in favor of the new system. In particular, female students pointed out that they had more opportunities to have op...

So far, antimicrobial susceptibility tests for S. maltophilia have not been fully standardized. The purpose of the study was to compare the susceptibility of S. maltophilia isolates against seven different antimicrobials using three different methods and to investigate their genetic relatedness. Although trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT) and ciprofloxacin have the lowest MIC values, SXT (98.1%) and ticarcillin/clavulanate (TLc) (73.1%) were found to be the most effective antimicrobials by agar dilution method, which was in accordance with the breakpoints established by NCCLS. Disc diffusion and E-test was in agreement with agar dilution method for SXT. When the isolation dates, clinics, antibiotyping, and AP-PCR data were investigated, two small outbreaks consisting of five and three cases were determined. By using the NCCLS criteria, disc diffusion and E-test were unreliable alternative methods for S. ma...

Five patients from the same village were admitted to hospital with the same complaints all within one week of September 2001. Tularemia was suspected and a diagnosis was made after physical and anamnesis examinations. The village was visited the same week that the patients were admitted to the hospital, in the January and April 2002. The villagers were examined and screened serologically by microagglutination method and the water sources were investigated bacteriologically. A total of 14 people were found to be infected from the outbreak and the oropharyngeal form was the only clinical presentation. Antibody titers ranged between 1 : 80 and 1 : 640. The patients responded well to the aminoglycoside plus tetracycline therapy. Examination of the pipewater and three springs revealed that all the water sources were contaminated by coliforms, however, Franc...

Materials and Methods: A total of 12,868 students from 34 elementary schools were scanned in April and May 2003. Samples of skin scrapings and hair roots were collected from students with hair and scalp lesions. Specimens were evaluated microscopically by KOH, and were inoculated into agar slants of Sabouraud dextrose agar with cycloheximide. Results: Eggs, nits or adult forms of head lice were detected in 698 (5.4%) students. The prevalence of head lice was significantly higher in girls (10.3%) than in boys (0.9%) (p<0.001). The infestation rate was the lowest below seven years of age (3.4%, p<0.001). Infestation rate was also high in families with low socioeconomic conditions (p<0.001). Tinea capitis was not detected in any of the students. Conclusion: Pediculus humanis capitis wa...

P. aeruginosa isolates from the patients as nosocomial pathogens and from the staffs were evaluated for their susceptibilities to the antimicrobials by the disk diffusion and E-test methods. Metallo beta-lactamase enzymes were investigated by E-test, the inducibility of β -lactamase enzymes were detected by the disk antagonism test. Serotyping was performed by slide agglutination method. The P. aeruginosa isolates were typed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Twenty-five P. aeruginosa strains from the patients and three from the staffs were isolated. Fifteen P. aeruginosa, eleven of which composed of MDR bacteria, were found in serogroup E, 7 strains in G, 4 strains in B, and 1 strain in serogroup A. In all 12 bacteria in the MDR and serogroup E, metallo beta-lactamase enzyme was found to be positive. And in other 15 strains, except the bacterium which could not be serotyped, chromosomal beta-lactamase was found to be positive. The result of the molecular typing showed PFGE A pattern. In conclusion, a pattern in PFGE which included bacteria from MDR and serogroup E, G which was observed in the P. aeruginosa strains which was isolated from the staff's hands and from the 5 patients, and PFGE F pattern were found to be observed the most. Finally, the two different clonal strains were found to be established in the intensive care.

Quantiferon-TB Gold In Tube test (QFT-GIT) has been reported to have better sensitivity and specifity than TST.
