Manusmṛti is a favourite book on ancient laws of Hindus among all Dharmaśāstric literature since its first English translation was published by Sir William Jones in 1794. The ninth act of the play Mṛcchakaṭika entirely devotes to a murder trial. Here, a brahmana named Cārudatta is being tried for the murder of courtesan Vasantasenā. Mṛcchakaṭika is missing from the source material to reconstruct the history of ancient Indian judicial procedure. Here, I have twofold objectives.
