The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has significantly altered the daily function of cities and the lives of their residents. This new condition, although it has created unprecedented health, economic and social challenges for urban societies, it consists also an important opportunity to reassess the concept of care as being expressed and reflected in the urban fabric and through communal processes. As the concept remains highly contested in the literature, this article highlights the need to reconsider care as a communal and spatial practice. In this context, it explores the emergence and spatial expression of different care practices in the city of Thessaloniki by focusing on the «Mutual Aid Network» created by the «Alexandrou Svolou Neighbourhood Initiative» during the second national lockdown in Greece. Thus, it highlights the role of «neighbourhoods» in managing interrelated health, social and economic crises, as well as the care relationships that are fostered in the urban environment. In this light, it analyses the activities of the Network, how they contributed to new relational paths in the city and how they exceeded in practice various spatial, social, and ultimately political boundaries between diverse social movements. Finally, the article makes a reference to some limitations regarding the sustainability of these practices in the post-Covid era. The pandemic can be seen as an opportunity to re-engage with the concept of the «neighbourhood». The last is seen as a common place to promote solidarity, mutual aid and self-management.

We reviewed 440 chants from 11 Greek football clubs to examine the role of these chants, discussing critically the reasons that led to their genesis and their reproduction. We found multiple references to substances which are used in the lyrics either as analogies, or referring to drug use, or to a 'state of mind'. The overall low degree of drug normalization in Greece, lead the Ultras to seek spaces and time where they can freely talk about drugs without the fear of social or legal control. In addition, drug-themed chanting is a part of a self-identification process through which Greek Ultras seek recognition by the audience in or outside the stadium. That recognition can be used as a process of distinction and differentiation, and also function as a symbolic opposition 'against modern football' .

In Greece, the ongoing urban-capitalist crisis has initiated major transformations, bringing with them new forms of urban living. Still, Greek cities remain both unwilling and incapable of managing their urban fabric. On the one hand, residents cannot participate in either decision-making or urban planning. On the other hand, neighbourhood activism demonstrates the limitations of urban management and local governance processes. Against the municipalist claims for more autonomy in policy-making, Greek city governments and even regional authorities have insignificant legislative capacities to meaningfully shape urban life. Greek cities require a new philosophy guiding the management of urban space.

The aim of the paper is to suggest a potential framework that can be used as a strategic planning tool for the promotion of culinary tourism in Thessaloniki. To this end, a food festival is being investigated. This has been conceived by the organizers as the foundation of the idea of culinary tourism in the city. However, the findings indicate that there is a lack of active participation by the locals and not enough communication among various assets that are associated with the culinary identity of the city. In general, Thessaloniki seems to embody the ongoing struggle of an emerging destination, which is dealing with the complex process of branding and marketing without having the proper tools and the necessary collaboration required between its structural networks. Accordingly, the research provides a lens through which the culinary culture of Thessaloniki can be used as a strategic pillar for stimulating a sustainable way of " consuming " whilst also promoting the city's identity; enhancing Thessaloniki's appeal as a culinary destination.

This paper addresses the way a top-down creative initiative (namely LABattoir) should operate by recognizing locals' needs and desires. Alongside, acknowledges the bottom-up dynamics, by creating channels of neighbourhood participation in a City that seemingly is not taking into consideration the plurality of its neighbourhoods whilst reflecting towards it as a totality. Hence, the aim is to shed light on the growing potential of neighbourhood mapping to support the bottom-up participation of citizens in decision-making and problem solving activities. For this reason, the research is highlighting the diversity and dynamic nature of urban neighbourhoods, whilst emphasizing partnerships and collaborations among cultural and community organizations. Finally, it shows how academic knowledge can be applied towards social goals. The findings indicate the importance of 'small-scale' observation and place-making. In this light, LABattoir can offer alternatives within the context of financial crisis by functioning as a reference point for community-building whilst considering the 'Neighbourhood' as the staging ground for an ongoing action-research project.

citizens in the midst of a more-than-financial crisis. Our goal was to find alternative ways to in which the neighbourhood would become more vibrant, creative and pleasant enhancing individual
responsibility, collective sensitivity and self-organization towards the commons. The first action of the Initiative was the ‘Spring’s Dinner’ in 2014, which I am monitoring ever since as a case of action research. The idea behind the event came by respective celebrations that are being held in the city of Barcelona (e.g. Fiestas de Gracia). The first challenge that emerged in our discussions was whether it was possible to transfer a cultural activity from another country of the European South to Thessaloniki. Apparently, this pilot urban experiment created a more fertile ground for carrying out various activities in the neighbourhood, which continued the next years with the parallel enrichment of actions. Reportedly, we held concerts, actions in schools and in public space, artistic and tactical urbanism interventions. In 2016 was the most successful year attracting 5.000 people appropriating the entire neighbourhood. We believe that the denaturation of respective initiatives can create a domino effect, which will grow from one event to another and will spread all over the city’s neighbourhoods, dragging the history of this city in a new era of participation and solidarity, while strengthening the social ties and creating a new relationship with public space. We aim to create a permanent framework, which will daily produce and reproduce new ideas and actions that will respond to our individual needs and provide solutions to the problems of our Neighbourhood.

They strengthen the sense of place and the trends for a gradual re-appropriation of public space by citizens; contributing to community-building and to the constant redefinition of distinctiveness and image place-making of the City and its communities. In this broad context, the investigation of their structure and organization can provide a practical approach to various models and tools that ensure not only their sustainability, but also their social footprint: The “next day” and the potential changes in social attitudes and perceptions are not simply an indicator of success or failure, but a critical factor in community-building. In this project a community festival and two events have been studied in order to analyse the strategies of the organisers. Their perceptions have been analysed when it comes to the branding they want to attach to their organization in order to obtain useful conclusions on whether their impact is evident throughout the year. I identified various practices in the financial management process in relation to an active or passive participation of the community within the planning process: the influence of commercialization in shaping a collective social consciousness is crucial.

Places in the Shadows of the City: The Role of Culture in the Production and Consumption of Suburbia, 2020

Very little research has looked at the ways in which suburbs are experienced, represented and imagined as ‘real’ places. This represents the core focus of this thesis. I am concerned with the extent to which the cultural consumption of the city has come to shape suburban residents’ relationship with the city. This question is addressed through the lens of suburban festivals. My aim is to reassess the role of suburban communities in shaping the cultural life of the city. In this light, this research seeks to (1) to assess the role of the suburbs as more central in defining the practice of everyday life than might be assumed, (2) show why culture matters for places where people live and co-exist day to day; and (3) to bring suburbs, in all of their cultural complexity, to the fore in discussions around improved connections to place and more so-called ‘sustainable’ urban futures and ways of life. The research draws on fieldwork carried out in suburban communities in Manchester, focusing on three suburban festivals as case studies. It is based on data collected through cultural mapping workshops and semi-structured interviews with festival organisers, festival participants and policymakers. The findings suggest that suburbia is a multi-dimensional concept. As such, the spatial experience of suburban place and the micro-geographies of the ‘intimate’ play a constitutive role in forming and shaping place identity. Accordingly, the thesis provides a more nuanced approach to the process of place-making in the suburbs. In doing so, it challenges the orthodoxy of a culturally inert suburbia on the fringes of the city, arguing that the suburbs provide a powerful conduit through which the contemporary urban condition can be better understood.
