Exploratory factor analysis showed the self-ratings loaded on four interpretable factors labelled Creativity, Intelligence (Cognitive Ability), Angry-Impulsive and Emotions. General response trends were consistent with previous self-estimates research as participants tended to rate themselves as just above average. A structural equation model containing all four self-estimated factors revealed that Openness predicted all four and, as expected, was the strongest predictor of self-estimated Creativity (ˇ = .56). Openness was also the strongest predictor of self-estimated Cognitive Ability (ˇ = .27). Agreeableness was the strongest predictor of self-estimated Emotions (ˇ = .29) and Angry-Impulsive (ˇ = -.34). Conscientiousness did not explain unique variance in any of the factors.

Our aim in the chapter is to help coaches to understand the science behind the utilization and potential of psychometrics and how these can be best used with clients. To that end, the final section of this chapter introduces a set of best practice guidelines for the employment of psychometrics in development.

A total of 723 working adults (mainly from Europe and the Middle East) completed a questionnaire which measured respondents self-assessed work competencies, self-rated intelligence, creativity, humor and ability to learn, core selfevaluations, and Big Five personality traits. Males rated themselves significantly higher than females on four competencies (Leading and Deciding; Analyzing and Interpreting, Creating and Conceptualizing; and Enterprising and Performing). Factor analysis revealed one overall factor. Regressing the total competency rating onto demography (age and sex), core selfevaluations, and the Big Five showed a clear interpretable pattern. Older, stable, open, conscientious, extraverts tended to rate themselves highest on overall competency. Extraverted males rated their creativity and sense of humor highest. Core self-evaluations added little incremental validity over the Big Five. Personal ratings of competence are a function of sex and personality which may systematically relate to actual competency behaviors.

Study one investigated the incremental validity of measures of IQ and fluid intelligence with the Big Five Personality Inventory with regards to DT. Significant relationships of DT to fluid intelligence, Extraversion and Disagreeableness were observed. Study two investigated the incremental validity of measures of fluid and crystallised intelligence (as assessed by a test of general knowledge) with the Big Five Personality Inventory with regards to DT. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed a significant relationship between crystallised intelligence and DT. The nature of the relationships of IQ, fluid and crystallised intelligence, in addition to personality traits to tests of DT were considered.

However, the extent to which MT is related to playing experiences and appreciation of club environment in elite women's football has received only limited research attention. Accordingly, the present study investigated MT in the context of the English Football Association Women's Super League (WSL). Specifically, this paper examined relationships between level of MT and external (playing experience, perceptions of club infrastructure, and appreciation of support mechanisms) and internal (self-esteem) factors. A sample of 63 elite female professional football players from the WSL, aged between 18 and 35 years (mean = 25.87, SD = 4.03), completed self-report measures. To objectively validate self-ratings, congruence between self and peer-rated was assessed. This revealed a strong degree of consistency. Subsequent analysis found positive correlations between MT, playing experience (number of years playing football, NoY; and highest level of football achieved, HLA), and External Support. Additionally, Self-Esteem correlated positively with MT, NoY, HLA, and External Support. Moderation analysis found MT interacted with NoY and predicted greater levels of Self-Esteem. Players with lower and mean MT, and more years as a professional were more likely to possess higher Self-Esteem (vs. less years). These outcomes indicated important relationships between MT, External Support, and Self-Esteem. Accordingly, WSL clubs can potentially apply the results of this study to enhance positive player mindset.
