To better understand this impact, academic researchers regularly apply well-established theories and methods. The vast majority of these approaches are based on multivariate methods that rely on average behavior and treat extreme cases as outliers. However, as recent history has shown, current developments in blockchain and cryptocurrencies are frequently characterized by aberrant behavior and unexpected events that shape individuals’ perceptions, market behavior, and public policymaking. In this paper, I apply various scenario tools to identify such extreme scenarios and illustrate their underlying structure as bundles of interdependent factors.

In 2024, they finally gave up, leaving behind a wealth of experience from which others can benefit. We use a rigorous case study approach to process and structure the remnants of Winding Tree. We thoroughly analyzed publicly available material, conducted a quantitative study with 86 respondents, and interviewed 19 key stakeholders. The results outline the key factors responsible for Winding Tree's ultimate failure. Additionally, we assess the findings in the light of popular theories and provide suggestions for refining existing theoretical frameworks. We end with concrete recommendations for practitioners on how future endeavors in this area can avoid the identified pitfalls and encourage academics to apply the refined theories to better explain the progress of digital transformation in the tourism and travel industry.

Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2025, 2025

Innovative technologies promise countless disruptive use cases in the travel and tourism industry... more Innovative technologies promise countless disruptive use cases in the travel and tourism industry. Despite their potential to improve the sector, technology adoption faces substantial barriers, such as high implementation costs, the need for significant infrastructure upgrades, and a lack of technical expertise among stakeholders. Existing theoretical approaches (e.g., Diffusion of Innovation, Technology-Organization-Environment framework) regularly assume a gradual adoption process and identify potentially relevant adoption drivers. However, such broad theories can only partially explain the high failure rates of startups in the industry and offer little advice for new endeavors. In this study, we use the case of Winding Tree, a startup that strived to create a decentralized, open-source marketplace for the travel industry, to illustrate the need for a stronger focus on the adoption gap and the key factors that enable or prevent enterprises from reaching a critical market size. We suggest a modification of Chasm Theory for tourism and travel research and present a framework that can help to better explore, explain, and predict the impact of digital transformation.

The existing literature has mainly examined MiCA from a legal perspective, while empirical assessments of industry perspectives remain scarce. In this study, we examine MiCA's impact on the crypto market and its implications for both theory and practice by analyzing and integrating insights from 12 expert interviews. The findings reveal perceived benefits arising from the unified market, enhanced investor protection, and compliance clarity, alongside challenges related to the high regulatory burden, legal ambiguities, and limited innovation support. On this basis, we provide recommendations for improving the regulatory framework and its implementation. Furthermore, we integrate our findings within the technologyorganization-environment (TOE) framework to provide a theory-based starting point for rigorous academic research. These findings contribute to regulatory discourse and offer practical guidance for the relevant stakeholders, including businesses, regulators, policymakers, and academics.

Based on his reasoning, we introduce the Theory of Chaordic Economics to explain how economic systems are transformed by two disruptive technologies: Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain. Artificial intelligence can generate novel output through algorithmic yet rather unpredictable processes. Blockchain creates deterministic results without central authorities and relies on elaborated protocols that prescribe how consensus can be reached within a network of peers. The amalgamation of chaos and order produces chaordic economic systems and can yield hitherto unthinkable economic structures.

This debate is often biased and characterized by a lack of understanding. Therefore, I start this paper with a discussion of the fundamentals of Bitcoin, which includes the clarification of widely held misconceptions. Next, I illustrate how Bitcoin is related to energy and describe the underlying incentive mechanism. In the main body of the paper, I discuss various components of Bitcoin's energy use, including the amount, composition, and geographical distribution of the energy, as well as emerging positive and negative effects. These components are then combined into a comprehensive framework that provides a solid foundation for future academic research and presents practitioners with the big picture of how and why Bitcoin requires energy and whether this can be justified from an environmental point of view.

Market studies predict that it has huge potential to disrupt existing economic structures and business processes, yet the complex technology behind it makes it hard for many people to grasp the basic functionality. Lacking are easy-to-use interfaces and playful applications which would allow for a simple Blockchain exploration. The project Play4Privacy (P4P) used the ancient Chinese board game Go to increase public understanding of the Blockchain. Individuals could join teams to jointly determine the moves of the stones, and tokens could be mined while playing the game. The respective moves of the stones were displayed on the wall of a public building. In this case study we use six qualitative interviews to summarize the anticipated and unanticipated findings of the project, which was not only intended to increase public awareness concerning Blockchain technology, but also toward privacy on the Internet. The results of this research project reveal several important managerial and behavioral obstacles that have to be overcome in order for Blockchain technology to reach widespread adoption.

Formative measurement models are difficult to identify, and hence to estimate and test. Existing solutions to the identification problem are shown to not adequately represent the formative constructs of interest. We propose a new two-step approach to operationalize a formatively measured construct that allows a closely-matched common factor equivalent to be included in any structural equation model. We provide an artificial example and an original empirical study of privacy to illustrate our approach. Detailed proofs are given in an appendix.

A self-proclaimed proponent of epistemological anarchism, in his seminal book Against Method he fiercely criticized rationalist thinking, as represented by his friend Imre Lakatos. As a result, he found himself heavily under fire for allegedly propagating ideas related to anarchy, Voodoo, astrology, Dada, and even violence. At times he even admitted that he regretted having written his famous book in the first place.1 He has been labeled the "worst enemy of science" and is generally only briefly mentioned as a marginal note following the discussion of critical rationalism in philosophical textbooks. In this paper I argue that a thorough review of his thoughts and principles might provide interesting insights, discussions, and even research guidelines for the Information Systems(IS) community. Initially, I briefly introduce the philosopher Feyerabend and his key ideas together with some criticism. Next, three central propositions are distilled from his work and four experienced IS researchers express their opinions on these statements. Finally, I provide a short summary and some suggestions regarding epistemology and methodology in the IS field.

A central issue in the heated debate surrounding cryptocurrencies is whether they have any intrinsic value at all. In this conceptual position paper, we briefly summarize existing standpoints and suggest three alternative propositions: (1) to avoid using the term “intrinsic value” for the valuation of cryptocurrencies, (2) to refer to the sum total of all properties that could potentially qualify them as money, and (3) to consider the amount of capital and energy that is needed to create them. These suggestions bear substantial implications for the economic classification of cryptocurrencies.

Methodology-39 interviews were conducted with three Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers, customers, recycling partners, DPP service providers and an international standards organisation.

Findings-The results show the four key drivers for DPP adoption: improved decision making to transition towards a circular economy, ensuring regulatory compliance, improving transparency across the supply chain, and enhancing customer engagement. Four main barriers exist: developing and communicating the business case for DPP adoption, increased need for data, data standards and ensuring interoperability between systems, the extent of implementation effort needed and ensuring data security and integrity.

Originality/value-This is one of the earliest papers to concisely summarise the main drivers and barriers of DPP adoption and present a comprehensive research agenda for operations and supply chain management.

Research paper thumbnail of Disintermediation of Consumer Services through Blockchain? The Role of Intermediary Brands, Value-Added Services, and Privacy Concerns

International Journal of Information Management, 2024

This paper explores the dynamics between value-added services, intermediary brands, and consumer ... more This paper explores the dynamics between value-added services, intermediary brands, and consumer privacy concerns in shaping attitudes toward blockchain-enabled consumer services. Grounded in the Antecedents-Privacy Concerns-Outcomes (APCO) framework, we develop a theoretical model that we test in three experimental studies with a total of 1613 participants, utilizing verbal scenarios featuring blockchain applications for international money transfer and hotel booking. Our research reveals that complete disintermediation via pure peer-to-peer blockchain transactions is unlikely. Consumers prefer blockchain applications offering supplementary services like call centers, password assistance, and cancellation options. As consumers become familiar with blockchain technology, privacy concerns intensify due to its distributed and immutable storage. The fears of data breaches are more pronounced when blockchain applications are offered by unknown startups as opposed to well-known Big Tech companies. However, privacy-conscious consumers also value the prospect of distancing themselves from big-data ecosystems by embracing blockchain solutions from startups. Our research extends the APCO framework by clarifying how privacy concerns, brand-based heuristics, and technological attributes interact. For managerial implications, blockchain applications necessitate re-intermediation to meet consumer preferences. Potential intermediaries, including Big Tech firms, startups, and industry incumbents, face unique challenges in developing and marketing blockchain-enabled consumer services.

T... more The visitor economy is responsible for a substantial percentage of the global carbon footprint. The mechanisms used to decarbonize it are insufficient, and the industry is relying on carbon trading with substandard credits that allow businesses to outsource the responsibility to decarbonize. We aim to transform carbon markets, help finance climate investments, and support decarbonization strategies. We identify and define the problem, outline the components and their interactions, and develop a conceptual model to transform carbon markets. The new, blockchain-based Carbon Tokenomics Model rolls out a decentralized database to store, trade, and manage carbon credits, with the goal of enabling sustainable climate finance investment. We outline the criteria needed for an industry-wide carbon calculator. We explain the process needed to increase rigor in climate investments in the visitor economy and introduce a delegated Proof of Commitment consensus mechanism. Our inclusive and transparent model illustrates how to reduce transaction costs, and how to build consumer and industry trust, generating much-needed investments for decarbonization.

Online users frequently trade data for benefits (privacy calculus). Trust in both the Internet and the vendor has been identified as an important antecedent to disclosing personal information online. We introduce the perceived risk of disclosing specific data types as an additional factor in the field of study. The results from a survey in three countries (Austria, Australia and Hong Kong) show that the perceived risk of disclosing personal information is a stronger stimulus for the intention to provide personal information than having trust in the Internet or in the online vendor. We find several significant differences in the relationships between the perceived risk of disclosing personal information, trust and the willingness to disclose personal information. The overall fit of the model is better for the Western countries than it is for Hong Kong.

Based on dynamic capabilities theory, we develop a conceptual framework that explores the applicability of blockchain for fostering economic development. Specifically, we postulate that the agent’s role in dynamic capabilities theory can be extended from the organisation level to the country level. Our proposed framework integrates blockchain as an economic driver and dynamic capabilities on higher-order and lower-order levels (i.e., business and investment development, human capital development, financial system enhancement, regulatory framework improvement, and systems and infrastructure improvement) to show their impacts on different aspects of economic development. International regulatory and political factors serve as moderators that determine whether a national blockchain-based strategy will ultimately be successful. In summary, we illustrate how blockchain as an enabler of dynamic capabilities can contribute to a small country’s economic development.

Given the increasing attention the PI is receiving from academics and practitioners—evidenced by a steadily growing number of publications, dedicated conferences and substantial funding opportunities—it is important to clearly define the domain, summarize current research and provide directions for future research. In this paper, we therefore present the state-of-the-art of the PI and highlight important research opportunities. The PI covers many different aspects of SCM, which can be seen as either a weakness or a strength of this concept. We believe that the latter is more pronounced and that valuable synergies can be achieved if SCM researchers keep the ‘big picture’ in mind, which in this case is the optimization of the total supply chain, including all participating companies, third parties and externalities. We conduct a systematic literature review and work out the most important components, performance indicators, goals, opportunities and challenges of the PI, which supports future incremental and rigorous research. We also provide several important directions for future research.
