Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the recent outreach service efforts of the Unive... more Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the recent outreach service efforts of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Main Library in the form of a Hall of Residence Librarian Programme. The aim of the programme was to minimize library anxiety through partnership with the Office of Students Services. Design/methodology/approach – The transition from the secondary to the tertiary level is not always the smoothest for some students. On the islands of the English-speaking Caribbean, such as Jamaica, it can be especially difficult as some matriculants have never used an automated library. These students often experience great difficulty in effectively using the library which may result in them shying away from doing so and thus negatively impact the quality of their work. The chapter details the programmatic approach to library orientation at The University of the Wes... more The chapter details the programmatic approach to library orientation at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus in Jamaica. The UWI Mona Library's Orientation Program targets the University's official student orientation/First-Year Experience initiative with aggressive marketing, scheduled tours, a booth at the orientation village, UWILinC catalog training sessions, combined with an existing Halls of Residence Librarian Program and a library scavenger hunt. This multifaceted, programmatic approach is a new endeavor for the Library. It aims at maximizing outreach and raising the level of awareness of the Library and its services among freshmen, as they begin their academic journey. The chapter also explores the effectiveness of the program and how it can be modified for the future.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative merits of thesis consultation with a... more Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative merits of thesis consultation with a librarian prior to graduate submission and to explore whether thesis consultation has a significant impact on the quality of the theses submitted by postgraduate students. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a quantitative case study approach. The total number of thesis scrutiny reports written by librarians between 2009 and 2014 has been reviewed for errors found in theses. Errors have been classified as referencing errors and formatting errors. These have been compiled in a spreadsheet and analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. Findings This paper highlights that thesis consultation has had a positive impact on the quality of the theses students submitted for examination at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Many are based on practices in museums. These best practices have been written into policies and shared with libraries worldwide. However, just as there has been an acknowledgement that some museum practices must be modified to suit the needs of libraries, the same applies to exhibition best practices across countries and libraries with different budgets. Small island developing states are particularly challenged by, among other things, limited resources, high cost of transportation and energy and vulnerability to natural disasters, which can have a direct or indirect impact on libraries and their ability to carry out functions like curating exhibitions.
