The district contains a large ethnic population, and two distinct groups of patients attend this clinic: the first, Australian-born, are usually singleand have little familysupport; the second,of mainly Middle-Eastern origin, are married at 15 or 16 according to traditional family practice and have a planned pregnancy, which is evidence of consummation of the marriage and highly acceptable socially. When the obstetric performances of these two groups of patients were compared in a recent study, some interesting differences emerged. In the period January 1980 March 1984, 148 babies were delivered to adolescent mothers (excluding Aborigines) born in Australia and 157 babies were delivered to mothers born in Lebanon, Turkey or Syria. All the overseas-born women were married. Of the Australianborn mothers, 5 were married at the time of bookingfor a first pregnancyand 12married during the pregnancy; the remainder were single. There were 29 multiparas in the overseas-born group, the remainder being primagravidae. There were 8 multiparas in the Australian-born group; 32 of this group had had previous terminations (there were no previous terminations in the overseasborn group). Thirteen overseas-born and 101 Australian-born patients reported smoking more than 10cigarettes per day (statistically significant). Gestation at booking was 22.9 weeks for overseas-born and 27.5 for Australian-born (statistically significant). Of 97 Australianborn patients who had cervical smears, 10 were reported as atypical with mild or moderate dysplasia. Six showed features of wart virus infection. There were no casesof carcinoma-in-situ. There were no abnormalities in 113 smears taken from overseasborn patients. The incidence of pregnancyinduced hypertension was 33% among Australian-born and 13% among overseasborn patients. Methods of delivery are detailed in the table below. Overseas-born patients have fewer antenatal complications, more spontaneous labours, more efficient labours, and less need for operative delivery than the Australian-born patients.

This perception and accompanying modesty towards the neurosciences, however, is an error. The intellectual trade between clinician and bench scientist has always been bi-directional and nowhere is this more clearly evident than in recent interactions between psychiatry and neuroscience.

To determine the growth and physical outcome at 2 years of age for children born after assisted reproductive techniques in the state of Victoria. Design. Using a case-matched control study between January 1991 and July 1993, 314 children (196 singletons, 47 sets of twins, 8 sets of triplets) conceived after in vitro fertilization (IVF) and related techniques at the Monash IVF and Royal Women's Hospital Reproductive Biology Unit and 150 control children (113 singletons, 17 sets of twins, 1 set of triplets) randomly selected from the general population using the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection Unit records were enrolled to be examined for minor dysmorphic and major organ abnormalities. Singleton and twin cases were matched for plurality and gestation and date of birth. Triplets were not matched. Results. IVF status was not a significant independent factor for physical outcomes, including malformation rates, nor for days of hospitalization postdischarge and operation...

The reason for these words should be self-evident to us as psychotherapists who treat traumatised infants, children and adults, traumatised families and groups. We know that unless we take special care in our moment-to-moment encounters we are exposed to various levels of ‘vicarious trauma’ (see Appendix 1 for the 8 levels). "

was Meant to Be.” The end of each handwritten word, penned in Polish by her mother in her Los Angeles apartment, became a new beginning of her daughter Suzanna’s translation. Her mother had fulfilled her daughters’ request to write about her life as a Jew in Warsaw from 1917. “My daughters have convinced me to write about my life.” And what a life!

AUSTRALIAN PERSPECTIVES ON TRANSGENDERING CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS: POLICY & PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS, 2021

The enclosed publication is a compilation of articles and submissions made by a number of Austral... more The enclosed publication is a compilation of articles and submissions made by a number of Australian professionals concerning the transgendering of children and adolescents. They come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including paediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, the law, history, parenting, women’s sports and sociology. They raise questions about the lack of a scientific evidence base, the lack of data on the long-term consequences of medical gender affirmation protocols, and the surreptitious avoidance of the key medical ethic, ‘First, do no harm’. They also consider legal issues and the consequences of embodying ‘trans rights’ in law and policy – for example, the impact on girls’ and women’s sports of allowing trans identified males to compete with, and against, female people.
A wide-ranging government sponsored inquiry is needed urgently. The initial proposal to undertake this compilation elicited 500 pages of Australian articles and submissions from a range of individuals and groups. This compilation includes a representative selection of those articles and submissions.
