Instead of the standard composite specimen and steel disc, a rotating composite disc and a steel pin is presently used to have a visible wear track. Other measurement techniques (Acoustic Emission, vibrations, temperature) can be used on the test rig. Continuous monitoring of the wear track combined with standard wear and friction measurements, give results of the current state of the wear track. Fourier frequency analysis (FFT) of these signals gives an indication of the change in condition and contact geometry of the resulting pin-disc combination. A high-speed camera will be used to acquire digital images of the worn composite surface. These online measurements yield to the gradual evolution in damage of the composite specimens.

The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the DLC coatings were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the DLC coatings exhibited better tribological properties under the lubrication of PAG containing PN or ZDDP than that of pure PAG. In addition, PN and ZDDP as additives show different tribological properties. The former offers better anti-wear ability, the latter offers better friction-reducing properties.

The friction and wear properties of polyimide at high temperatures are influenced by important tr... more The friction and wear properties of polyimide at high temperatures are influenced by important tribochemical reactions on the sliding surfaces. Hydrolysis at 100-140 • C causes high friction and low wear whereas imidisation at 180-260 • C causes low friction and high wear. Raman spectroscopy confirms that the imidised structure that forms during sliding is characterised by reorientation of the C-N-C imide bonds from transverse into axial conformation. Also, the C O and CO -C groups become more flexible and reorient in the worn imide structure. Depending on the normal loads, reorientation is either concentrated on the C O side groups at low loads or on the C-N-C and CO -C backbone structure at high loads. Black spots on the surface represent a degraded fraction of polyamic acid monomers. Different surface morphologies are observed from atomic force microscopy. Hydrolysed structures correspond to an irregular surface pattern with pits and are preferentially worn parallel to the sliding direction. The imidised surface is smoother due to high strength and has a structure oriented along the sliding direction. However, it is more brittle and hence craters are formed that are larger compared to those formed under low-temperature sliding conditions. Depositions on the sliding surfaces at 220-260 • C represent interaction of debris particles on the polyimide surface. On the nanometer scale, a progressive orientation of polyimide clusters parallel to the sliding direction is detected.

Therefore, on a rebuild Pin-on-disc test rig, using composite discs and steel pins, the frictional behaviour of these materials is investigated. Due to the indicated fibre orientation, and a simple trigger mechanism, it was possible to distinguish the friction force for different fibre orientations. The classical know orientations, parallel and perpendicular to the direction of sliding provided expected results, for both cases. The ~45° orientation, which is extremely important regarding filament wounded bearings, behaved in both cases similar -- regarding friction force-- in an unexpected way. The friction force of the 45° orientation was higher in all cases, and the amount was similar to the difference between the parallel and perpendicular case. These findings yield the conclusion that the 45° orientations cannot be neglected in frictional studies, and the ...
