The cassava peeling machine consists of the peeling drum (with both knife and abrasive embedded), conveyor, electric motor, and speed reducer. The machine was designed using solid work software. The peeler was evaluated with cassava root length of about 300mm. The speed range of 90-120rpm was used to test the performance of the peeler. The average capacity of the developed machine was 450kg/h, with a peeling efficiency of 90%. The root loss of 5% and peel retention of 5% were obtained during machine test. The various shapes of cassava roots do not affect the machine's functionality as it functions well on the different shapes and sizes of cassava roots. Results also show that the machine is affordable and efficient and is recommended to improve the processing productivity of cassava food products. It is therefore, recommended that further research be carried out on cassava roots geometry and thickness to further improve the peeling efficiency of the machine. Modelling of the cassava peeling process should be studied, taking into consideration the physical parameters; towards identifying any flaw that needs improvement in the present design. More research should be carried on the utilization of alternative sources of energy like solar to power the machine at a minimal energy cost.

Three feed samples of the fish feed materials-X1, X2 and X3 weighing 250g each were o prepared at different moisture contents of 7, 11, 13 and 15%. The samples were dried at a temperature of 102 C for 24hrs and weighed after cooling. Also, the samples were subjected under three machine speeds: 75, 95, 138 and 200 rpm and die diameter of 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm. The results showed that pelleting efficiencies of 94.0%, 93.2%, and 92.1% for the feed samples X1, X2 and X3 respectively were obtained at moisture contents of 7%, die hole of 3mm and speed of 75rpm. The result also revealed that the feed mixtures of X1, X2 and X3 processed at die hole diameter of 4mm, die speed of 95rpm and moisture content of 11% gave the lowest values of throughput of 36, 38, and 34 kg/h respectively for the machine. The feed mixture (X1) at die hole diameter of 4mm, die speed of 95rpm and moisture content of 11% gave the highest value of pelleting durability of 85.7% among the feed mixtures evaluated. Therefore, the performance of the innovative fish feed pelleting machine show that the machine would help in selecting the best machine variables for different feed mixtures

The engine performance and deteriorating behavior was modeled with a view to estimate the creep life consumption and operating severity. The predicted severity factor of each degradation was similar to the trend observed by the maintenance, repair and overhauling (MRO) with 0-3.1% difference. The combine degradation severity factor of the engine operating at both saline and desert mission areas was 6.4% and 7.5% respectively when compared with compressor fouling or turbine erosion cases. The creep life obtained was 2.5% lower. Combine degradation resulted in high severity factor of 5% emission development index (EDI) and the cost of complete replacement of a damaged blade was USD 256 per flight hour (FH). However, for the isolated cases of degradation, the severity factor was 3% EDI lower and the cost of refurbishing a damage blade was USD 81/FH. This indicates that a refurbishment program can be considered for CFM56-3B engines operating in condition of low severity and replacement program for engines operating in condition of high severity.

The study objectives are (i) to determine the exergetic performance, and TSIs of modified ORCs based on different thermodynamic inputs and (ii) compare the optimum exergetic performance parameters and the TSIs of the ORCs. The TSIs considered include, waste exergy ratio (WER), exergy efficiency (EE), exergetic sustainability index (ESI) and environmental effect factor (EEF). Additionally, a component by component exergy analysis was first performed, followed by the application of the TSI models established by modifying the existing TSI model for open cycle thermal plants. The results indicated that the increase in EE across the ORCs was not greater than 0.3%. The exergy destruction gap across the ORCs was between 1.2 and 23%. The ESI was low with the basic ORC while the modified systems had improved ESIs. However, best exergetic performance and TSIs were obtained at optimum conditions of ≤ ≤ 0.127 p 2.144 MPa 1 , ≤ ≤ 0.17 p 2.5 MPa 2 and ≤ ≤ 416 t 426 3. The study inferred that system configuration and type of working fluids are paramount in determining the ORC performance. Moreover, the results obtained can further be used to evaluate the functional sustainability limits of working fluids.

The specific objectives of this study are to estimate factors influencing the decision to participate in cocoyam marketing in Abia State. Primary and secondary data were used in the survey. The primary data were collected from a random sample of 200 cocoyam marketers in Abia State. The respondents were drawn from rural and urban markets in the agricultural zones of the state. The data were analyzed using probit model. The result shows that values of cocoyam and farm size are positively associated with the probability to sell cocoyam. This probably means that households with large farm sizes tended to produce marketable surpluses and participated in the market as sellers. Moreover, it is possible when the value of the crop was high(1.0%,significant). The coefficients on education and price of cocoyam have positive signs. The result shows that education acquire...

Nigeria Agricultural Journal, Dec 31, 2020

The innovative fish feed pelleting machine used for the analysis consists of three distinct units... more The innovative fish feed pelleting machine used for the analysis consists of three distinct units; grinding, pelleting and drying.

The methods adopted in the execution of this project work include; Machine design, Machine development, Machine evaluation and Optimization to compare the present machine to that of the previous designs. Machine efficiency, safety factors, and portability were considered in this research. The receiver hopper was carefully designed at the angle 23° that the mash can flow smoothly while filter basket, shaft, collector and conveyor auger were designed using stainless steel. Also, the frame of the machine is made up of angle iron at the four corners for support and holding the top bearings are mild steel metals to keep it in place and withstand vibration. Pulleys used in the design were made of cast iron. The screw conveyor and the basket end plate designed using mild steel to serve a dual purpose; cover for the filter basket and shaft for the basket bearing while blower was also introduced for drying of mash faster and yarn used for preventing leakages. The machine runs on a single phase five horsepower electric motor at a speed of 1440 rpm. The capacity of the dewatering fabricated was 158 kg/hr and 30% reduction in size and 50 % reduction in price was achieved.

Extraction by chemical means is complex, expensive, and requires high skill to operate. The developed motorized ginger juice expression machine performs two distinct unit operations: size reduction and separation processes. Major components of the machine include the feeding unit, pulverizing unit, juice expression unit, juice drainage point, waste outlet, frame, and power transmission system. The machine is powered by 2 H.P., 1400 rpm and 1 H.P., 1430 rpm prime movers, and the V-belts and pulley assembly speed are 646 rpm and 240 rpm, respectively. The developed expression machine offers an affordable and simple method of processing fresh ginger minimizing loss in ginger rhizome quantity and quality, and ultimately reducing postharvest losses.

Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments, 2018

The optimum exergetic performance parameters and thermo-sustainability indicators (TSIs) of low-t... more The optimum exergetic performance parameters and thermo-sustainability indicators (TSIs) of low-temperature Organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) are presented.
