An international survey of 503 firms was conducted to examine the benefits of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), the de-facto ITSM framework, specifically on how these benefits evolve as companies increase their adoption of the ITIL model. Also studied are the perception of challenges of the implementation and the number of ITIL processes implemented in relation to the progress of the adoption of ITIL. Results indicate that as the maturity of implementation increases, the perception of challenges decreases. Findings also show that as the maturity of implementation increases, the number of realized benefits increases, as well as the number of implemented ITIL processes. Implications for practitioners and researchers are also discussed.

Information systems (IS) is a discipline that draws upon many other disciplines to bridge theory ... more Information systems (IS) is a discipline that draws upon many other disciplines to bridge theory and practice and address the information and knowledge needs of individuals, organisations and society. We propose that an ideal education in IS would be delivered via cross-faculty programs of study that are not combinations of units from different faculties and disciplines, but programs which include a coherent and cohesive set of units co-designed and co-delivered by teaching staff from more than one faculty. This allows students, and teachers, to appreciate the different content and perspectives within the same context, as they will experience in the workplace, and allow them to develop deeper understandings of the complexity that can arise in their roles as mediators and communicators in finding appropriate IT solutions. Such a model poses a radical change, and thus the framework we offer uses a ‘theory of change’ agenda.

Combining good practices principles for learning and teaching across cultures and elements of Universal Instructional Design, this small-scale survey of courses provided on four MOOC platforms Coursera, Udacity, Open2Study and edX looks at determining what can be considered good culturally inclusive practice. The aim of the project is to establish minimum standards and examples of good practice that can form the benchmarks for all online units.

While inter-organizational systems (IOS) are considered to be well adopted, a number of industries, amongst others the wood industry, lag far behind. This study aims to explain how industry characteristics can contribute to the explanation of this low adoption phenomenon. Based on eleven case studies and 204 survey responses, this mixed method study identifies five industry characteristics and their influence on adoption factors. The identified industry characteristics are organizational size, aged staff, low diffusion of IS, low government support, and heterogeneity in IT infrastructures. A theoretical model is developed integrating the industry characteristics and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework constructs. This study demonstrates that partner pressure, relative advantage, regulatory environment, and technological readiness significantly...

Research paper thumbnail of Value Co-Creation in Supply Chains through IT Integration: The Role of Collaborative Network Structure

Firms today are increasingly dependent on external resources, and the need for collaboration acro... more Firms today are increasingly dependent on external resources, and the need for collaboration across organizational boundaries continues to grow. Therefore, research has highlighted the importance of IT capabilities that integrate an organization with its network of partner organizations. However, antecedents of IT integration have been primarily derived from technology-driven contexts. In contrast, the role of organizational attributes remains largely unexplored. We therefore develop and test a theoretical model to examine collaborative network structure as an antecedent to IT integration. Based on this particular form of supply chain governance, we go on to explore how IT integration in conjunction with other capabilities leads to supply chain integration, thereby enabling the creation of value. Based on data gathered from 150 supply chain executives, the study provides evidence on the important role of organizational attributes and contributes to the stream of research that examin...

Because of its potential to help an organization improve its Business-IT alignment, IT governance has grown in popularity over the last years. However, little research exists on the topic. An international survey of 113 firms using CobiT was conducted to examine the users‟ satisfaction, impact on Business-IT alignment and perception on the benefits realized. The research concentrates on the evolution of these three factors as companies increase their implementation of CobiT. Results indicate that companies that have achieved higher implementation levels were more satisfied with the framework, experienced high positive impacts on their Business-IT alignment and received greater benefits in the areas of IT governance.

As the use of learning analytics in higher education is a relatively new area of practice and research, the intent of this paper is to provide an overview of learning analytics including a summary of some exemplar tools. Finally we conclude the paper with a discussion on challenges and ethical issues.

Research paper thumbnail of Creating a taxonomy of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, stakeholders, environment, Green IS, and Green IT : a literature review

Therefore, the authors provide a taxonomy in the form of a matrix to relate the relevant concepts to each other. The quest is to identify missing relationships and establish concepts relationships. Papers from six major journals and one conference between 2006 and 2010 were examined in order to shed light on the relationship matrix. The article delivers definitions, insights into usage of terminology and existing boundaries and links amongst definitions. Besides the comprehensive overview, the authors were able to identify new links between the relevant terms. This was done by reversing given relationship definitions between the relevant terms and by using analogies.

In contrast with existing literature review methodologies, this article provides a systematic and comprehensive way of identifying research gaps by comparing academic and practitioner literatures. We use Semantic Entity Annotators and a keyness methodology to uncover discrepancies between the literatures, exposing relevant research gaps. In this way, our methodology borrows from established methods in Linguistics and Information Retrieval. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology, we apply the proposed methodology to the Internet of Things. In particular, we explore the areas of smartphones, home appliances, and integrated circuits. The methodology presented here aims to increase the relevance of fields such as IS, helping to ensure future academic research is better aligned with practiti...

We analyze to what extent these articles provide information on the possible range of negative health impacts due to bushfire smoke pollution, and to what extent they report on climate change as a driver behind increased bushfire risk. A temporary surge in articles in our sample occurs during the unusually severe 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires. However, most articles are limited to general statements about the health impacts of bushfire smoke, with only 50 articles in the sample (9%) mentioning an explicit link between bushfire smoke inhalation and cardiovascular and respiratory problems or increases in mortality risk. 148 of the 512 articles in the sample (29%) established a connection between bushfire risk and climate change. We carry out a further keyword analysis to identify differences in reporting by...

The article shows how the method can track the emergence of topics and research trends over time.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis of the emergence of topics and shifts in research trends was based on a machine learning approach that allowed the authors to identify “topic bursts” in publication data. The data set of this study contained, 2,502 records published between 1972 and 2019, both within and outside of accounting journals. The data set was assembled through a systematic keyword search of the literature.FindingsFindings indicated that research studies within accounting journals have addressed sustainability concerns in a general fashion, with a recent focus on broad topics such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and stakeholder theory. Research studies published outside of account...

Research paper thumbnail of Do International Students Appreciate Active Learning in Lectures?

It promotes deep learning, helping to develop critical thinking and writing skills in students. Less well understood, however, are the responses of international students to active learning. Using social constructivist theory, the purpose of this study is to examine domestic and international student perceptions of active learning introduced into large undergraduate Accounting Information Systems lectures. Several active learning strategies were implemented over one semester and examined through the use of semi-structured interviews as well as pre- and post- implementation surveys. Our results suggest broad improvements for international students in student engagement and understanding of unit material when implementing active learning strategies. Other key implications include international student preference for active learning compared with passive learning styles, ...
