Environmental factors result to degradation mechanics of the overall performance of the engine. Industrialist therefore face unplanned equipment and manufacturing downtime which is undesirable because it leads to economic losses and costly repairs. While condition monitoring is used to obtain early warning of impending equipment failure, optimization techniques such as water washing (online and offline) are used to bring the engine/equipment back to lime-light. In this work, several schedule visits were made to a gas turbine plant on industrial duty for electricity generation in an offshore thermal station at Ibeno, near Eket, Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. Continuous monitoring of the aerothermodynamics and vibration data were taken for a period of twelve months on hourly basis to examine the state of health of the engine due to adverse offshore environmental factors. The diagnostic approach of vibration analysis, trend and performance monitoring were used with a model-based mixed data approach for optimizing the performance of the offshore gas turbine plant.A software code-named VANCANAL written in C ++ programming language was used to proactively monitor the gas turbine plant. The software displayed the operational (actual) values of all the parameters of the engine against their designed (reference) values. Once a set limit is exceeded, the software is capable of giving an alarm, signifying the need for maintenance. 31 Nomenclature .. x = Acceleration vibration amplitude, mm/s 2 . x = Velocity vibration amplitude, mm/s m = Lumped mass of rotating system, Kg C = Damping coefficient constant, N.s/m x = Displacement vibration amplitude, mm Fo = Forcing function at initial frequency, Kg.m/s 2 k = Rotor shaft stiffness, KN.m/rad ω = Engine rotational speed, rad/s ωn = Natural damped frequency of vibration, rad/s st d = Elongation, m 1 P = Compressor inlet pressure, bar 2 P = Compressor outlet pressure, bar 1 T = Compressor inlet temperature, K  2 T = Compressor discharge temperature, K  ' 2 T = Compressor isentropic temperature, C  S = Entropy, KJ/KgK

Considering Alaoja (load-bus), Onitsha (load-bus) and Afam power station (generating-bus) referred as study case, from the Nigerian 330KV transmission grid (network) for purpose of investigation and findings. The analysis is based on swing-equation model approach and power transfer capability conditions. The activities of fault initiated were recorded as "sustained fault" classified with respect to time setting of the protective relay and circuit breaker operations from Afam power generating station (GS) to the 330KV network in order to measure the behaviour of the turbine rotor-angle with the clearing time setting of the relay. The collected data were simulated via Matlab platform, with the clearing time setting of (t = 0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50) corresponding to the respective deviation of the rotor swinging angles of (rf1, rf2, rf3 and rf4). Where rf1 defined the deviation of the rotor-angle of the turbine power plant due to sustained fault condition with time, t. while rf2, rf3, and rf4; defined the restoration ability of the deviated rotor-angle (rf1) from instability to gradual progressive stability condition, with fault cleared at 2.5cycle (rf2), 6.5 cycle (rf3) and 8.25cycle (rf4) respectively. The 2 nd scenario also look at the analysis of three (3) phase short-circuit faults including: (phase A, phase B; phase C respectively) in a Matlab coded environment. The results of the simulated fault condition shows that, there is strong need for short-circuit fault-clearing time which should be quick for relay and circuit breaker responses (sensitivity and selectivity-based). The revelation of the finding also shows that system instability will be restored for improvement at fault clearing time before 0.05s. Evidently, further work will look at the investigation of incremental loading condition of the turbine power plant.

This might get worse, as the country’s population increases and economic development is calling for more demand of energy. It is therefore, imperative that adequate measures should be taken from our power plants to cater for Nigeria impending industrialization and its energy crisis which leaves many industries running at high cost and keeps many private homes in blackout. Since power generating plant is the engine room that drive industrialization, well-being and comfort for man and its environment. This work considered the analysis of cost for power generation plants case study Nigeria with the view to determine the best technique that can be used to achieve future planning installation of thermal and hydro power plant in order to optimize cost savings. Calculations and analysis were made using annual straight line depreciating reserve (ASLDR), annual diminishing value reserve (ADVR) and annual sinking fund reserve (ASFR) with the aim to input the best technique that will investigate the
true trend of cost of installation into the projected future plans between years 2011–2035 (25 years). The study revealed that ASLDR gives consistent linear values as compared to the two other techniques (ADVR and ASFR). The annual straightline depreciation reserve (ASLDR) cost of installation of afam thermal power plant in 2011 was (N185,480,000,000.00) and ASFR was N53, 914,223,700.00 while ADVR was N0.6195. In the case of Kainji hydro power plant, the ASLDR, ADVR
and ASFR was N5, 155,200,000, N0.7229.00 and N149, 848,300.00 respectively. The subsequent cost of installation of thermal and hydro power plants was obtained and conducted via excel platform from 2011-2035.

Research paper thumbnail of A Mathematical Modeling of Double Exponential Voltage – Waveshape (Impulse Generator) For Power Substations Using Laplace-Transform

This paper presented a framework of mathematical model of double exponential voltage waveshape fo... more This paper presented a framework of mathematical model of double exponential voltage waveshape for purpose of generation of impulse voltages and currents. An impulse voltage is a unidirectional voltage which, without appreciable oscillations, rises rapidly to a maximum value and falls more or less rapidly to zero. The maximum value is called the peak value of the impulse and the impulse voltage is specified by this value. Small oscillations are tolerated provided that their amplitude is less than 5% of the peak value of the impulse voltage. An impulse voltage develops without causing flash over or puncture, is called a full impulse voltage, but if flash over or puncture occur thus causing sudden collapse of the impulse voltage is called a chopped impulse voltage. A full impulse voltage is characterized by its peak value and its two time interval, the wave – front the wave-tail time intervals. The wave front time of an impulse wave is the time taken by the wave to reach to its maximum value starting from zero value. It is difficult to identify the start and peak points of the wave, hence the wave front time is specified as 1.25 times (t 2 – t 1), where t 2 is the time for the wave to reach to its 90% of the peak value and t 1 is the time to reach 10% of the peak value. Since (t 2 – t 1), represents about 80% of the wavefront time, it is multiplied by 1.25 to give total wave front time. Evidently, some basic concept of circuit analysis including Laplace transform principle were used to solve for the double exponential voltage wave-shape, formulated from the circuit analysis. The solutions of the formulated problems represents the model for the exponential growing voltage/currents wave shape representatively. Some specific assumptions were made in analyzing this models. The results from the analysis shows an exponential increase in voltage values with respect to time which represents the growth of the voltage pattern. This result are were represented on graph using matrix-laboratory (Matlab). Most importantly, the protection of power substations against lighting over voltages is critical reliable operation of electrical network since a frequent initiation of lighting surges etc without adequate moderation of the developed overvoltage may serious damage equipment, facilities etc resulting in power supply interruptions. This means that this paper will analyse time the voltage profile with respect to time in is order to access at what point the voltage is critical not adequate for power system equipments.

The predicted energy demand into the projected future of 20years is 45 5,870.2MW. The paper work also extended the prediction form into: least-square, exponential regression model. Evidently, the comparism plot for linear and exponential model which shows similar predicting pattern: particularly least-square exhibit linear behavior, while exponential shows non-linear behaviour, the linear model gives more accurate result as compared to the exponential.

The model is implemented in Matlab platform with a plot in residential load demand, commercial load demand and industrial load demand in (MW). In the quest for analysis and predicting the energy (power) demand (MW) requirement for a projection period of (2013-2032), data are collected between (2000-2012), from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and National Bureau of statistics (NBS). The results obtained shows that energy generated from the respective generating station including Egbin thermal power station Lagos, Sapele thermal power station etc. are grossly inadequate. This mismatch is a major problem in power system planning and operation. The result also shows that there is deviation between predicted energy demand (MW) and available power (or capacity allocated).
