Free radical solution polymerization has been employed to synthesize homopolymers of vinyl acetat... more Free radical solution polymerization has been employed to synthesize homopolymers of vinyl acetate (VAc), cyclohexyl acrylate (CA), benzyl acrylate (BA), and other various acrylates. The method was also used to synthesize copolymers of vinyl acetate with these various acrylates at 50:50 (v/v) feed ratio. To compute reactivity ratios of monomers in P(VAc-CA) and P(VAc-BA), a series of copolymers in the feed ratio of 80:20, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, and 20:80 (v/v) of VAc and either CA or BA were also synthesized. Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos methods were used to compute reactivity ratios from 1 H-NMR spectroscopic data. The homopolymers and copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1 H- and 13 C-NMR, TGA, GPC, and viscosity measurements. The activation energy of decomposition (E a ) of the polymers was calculated from TGA analysis using the Broido method. M n , M w , and MWD of the polymers were evaluated from GPC data. The intrinsic viscosities of polymer, in non-theta and in theta (θ) solvents were evaluated using a capillary viscometer. Using intrinsic viscosity and GPC data, the voluminosity (V E ), shape factor ( x ), activation parameters of viscous flow, root-mean-square end-to-end distance ( d R 2 ¢ 1/2 ), radius of diffusing particle (r'), and diffusion coefficient (D o ) were also computed at various temperatures.

The synthesized polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, H-NMR, paper chromatography, TGA analysis, viscosity measurements and biodegradation studies. Elemental analysis, paper chromatography and spectroscopic studies confirmed polyamide formation. The activation energy values for various stages of decomposition were calculated from TGA analysis using Broido's method. The intrinsic viscosity ([η]), voluminosity (VE) and shape factor (ν) were also computed using viscosity data. Microbiological observations of polymer-dependant growth studies using a soil bacterial isolate, suggested that one of these polymers was used as growth substrate and was therefore biodegradable.

Copolymers of VP and VAc in various monomer feed ratios were also synthesized by the same procedure. They were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, PNMR, TGA, swelling, and viscosity measurements. The reactivity ratios of the monomers were computed by both Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos methods using data from both PNMR and elemental analysis studies. The activation energy values for various stages of decomposition were calculated from TGA analysis using Broido's method. The viscosity measurements were carried out at four different temperatures: 30, 35, 40, and 45ЊC. The activation parameters of the viscous flow, voluminosity (V E), and shape factor (n) were also computed for all systems.

Tercopolymers of acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) and acrylonitrile (AN) synthesized by free ra... more Tercopolymers of acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) and acrylonitrile (AN) synthesized by free radical solution polymerization have been characterized using 13 C NMR and thermal analysis (DSC) techniques. Incorporation of the above three monomers was con®rmed by 13 C NMR analysis. The tercopolymers have similar polymer backbone structures, and a limited branching in the main chain was found as evidenced by DSC analysis. Microbiological observations of polymer-dependent growth and of respiration studies using a soil bacterial isolate, suggested that these tercopolymers were used as growth substrate and were therefore biodegradable.
