Some argue that, like news comedy programs such as the Daily Show, soft-news has a dumbing down effect by focusing more on personalities, drama and the sensationalism of public affairs. However, some recent work suggests this kind of news may perform an educative function for an inattentive public that does not regularly follow the more traditional forms of hard-news. Described as an incidental by-product, citizens may gain important exposure to public affairs that can contribute to political learning. The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze these developments through the lens of modern republicanism. Within this approach, it is believed that in order for citizens to avoid domination, they must take an active role in self-government through contestatory democratic practices. I will argue that despite...

The growing importance of social media and the weaponization of big data and fake news signal that new forms of domination will be a significant challenge to democratic practices going forward. This paper explores these developments through the lens of republicanism and asks if this approach can offer an attractive way to address these threats. In particular, I argue that republicanism’s focus on minimizing domination through its alternative conception of liberty contains a certain resilient form of antipower that serves to counter some of the arbitrary interferences that have emerged in the shift from Web 2.0 to 3.0.

These endeavours to clarify and codify the rights and duties of EU citizens in the proposed CT seem, among other things, to signal a move towards a richer and more robust notion of citizenship and its relation to the larger political community. Curiously, a document that is meant, among other things, to enhance the democratic nature of the Union has failed to be endorsed democratically by its citizens.3 Putting aside these difficulties, the main purpose of this chapter is to focus on a group of theorists who believe that the Constitutional process signals a decisive shift towards a post-national political community with a rich cosmopolitan conception of citizenship.

World about modern republicanism's distinctiveness when compared to the liberalisms of John Rawls... more World about modern republicanism's distinctiveness when compared to the liberalisms of John Rawls and Will Kymlicka cannot be extended to all varieties of liberalism. In particular, he suggests that modern republicanism may be best thought of as a form of perfectionist liberalism. I disagree with this characterisation for two main reasons. The first concerns the difference between the scope and robustness of republican and liberal conceptions of liberty. The second focuses on the difference in the intensity and the object of the virtues and values that accompany republican liberty as non-domination.
