Solid waste has become a colossal issue for megacities around the globe and Mumbai is no exceptio... more Solid waste has become a colossal issue for megacities around the globe and Mumbai is no exception. Though government and local bodies are taking several steps to manage solid waste, due to continuous flow of solid waste generated by the industries and residences, managing it has become a task. The study is based on the secondary data collected from the official website of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The study brings out the most populated wards of the city and has connected them well with the most solid waste generating wards. It is found that Andheri and southern wards contribute most to it. It is recommended to increase the capacity of the dumping grounds by including the fringe areas of the dump and stopping its trade further. Also, eco-friendly consumerism is highly recommended.

The present study thus, aims to carry out a change detection study of Powai Lake with its surroundings. The major classes obtained are lake, wetland, vegetation, settlements and roads. The major observations include a decrement in the area covered by lake water, an increase in the areas under wetland and vegetation. The number of settlements has also increased considerably and the quality of road has also improved over the years. Overall, deterioration in the lake has been observed with an improvement in cultural factors.

For the first time in its history, Census of India has enumerated the number of transgender in al... more For the first time in its history, Census of India has enumerated the number of transgender in all the states of India in 2011. The count is estimated to be 4.9 lakh (TOI, 2014). Census has counted them under a distinct category named ‘others’ (Census of India, 2011). The present paper tries to give a spatial dimension to the context so that fair and justifiable attention could be paid towards the upliftment of transgender in the country. It has been observed that maximum population is concentrated in the northern and central part of the country as compared to the eastern parts. The situation is however complex with SC and ST population amongst the community. Thus, the paper tries to bring out the spatial spread of the community with an aim to give suggestions to the respective states to improve their status.
