Having an appearance of a citadel situated on a steep rock, the clty is surrounded by Antalya and Slde In the west, by Silifke in the east, by Mediterranean Sea in the south and by Kapadokya in the north. We do not have much information about the early Christian period of the eity. However, it is known that the castle of Alanya was restored and re-mended against the Arabs, who were dangerous enemies of the Byzantines in the 7th century. Within this castle. there are three Byzantlne churches having survived up to the present. one in the inner castle. one In the central fortress and the other in the cilvardo nose. The old church In the inner castle is built of a four-Ieaf trlkonkhos shape. Sound and strong today, the church has two entrances, one from the west and the other from the north. The trikonkhos branches covered wlth seml domes surraunding the central dome extend outwards from the sides. The second church is built of the c1bor1um plan in a battıement of the Hellenistic period in the central fortress. The iast building discovered In the castle is the Cllvardo Nose Chapel. Built on arather steep rocky field, the church has, not unlike the Arabic Evliya, a ciborium plan. All three bulldings are made out of rubbles. Although we do not have any exact knowledge as to the buildlng dates of them, it would be reasonable to place them within the period from the Iate 7th century, when the castle was restored, to the early 13th century when thẽ Ijuks gained the control and command of Alanya.

Four painted rock surfaces were found in Ballıkaya, above the village of Dereağzı in Incirliova d... more Four painted rock surfaces were found in Ballıkaya, above the village of Dereağzı in Incirliova district of Aydın, and in Yava village of Yatağan district of Muğla Province. In Ballıkaya, Aydın, on the right side of the entrance of the cave, which is located in a very steep area, a single figure, the Archangel Michael, is depicted in a panel consisting of a bluish-grey background on the plastered surface from the front and standing. The angel is wearing a tunic and armour with an embroidered front. The angel, whose open wings spread on both sides and reach down to the ground, holds the sword resting on his shoulder with one hand and the scabbard downwards with the other. The first of the paintings identified in Yatağan is located in southwest of the monumental rock mass popularly known as Resimli Kaya. The paintings, which were painted on the unplastered surface, are located on two bands extending in the east-west direction. The first identifiable scene in the upper strip is the betrayal of Judas. In the central part of the depiction, there are two standing figures, one with a body painted from the front and the other from the side. The heads of these figures, representing Jesus on the left and Judas on the right, leaning against each other, are from the front. The Crucifixion of Jesus is depicted in the continuation of the depiction. In the centre of the composition, there are Jesus, Mary and John on the cross. In the lower band are six medallions depicting portraits of saints, bishops or church fathers in bust form. The third painting in Yatağan is in a small space called the Rosette Cave formed by stone blocks to the north of the Painted Rock Mass. There are no figures in the plaster paintings. The naturally formed dome-like form in the space is framed by a thin black line and the interior is bordered by a thick circular border in light green. In the lower part of the outer left corner of the circular frame, there is a tulip motif with long green leaves. The fourth painted surface at Yatağan is located in a deep niche on the west face of the rock mass called Nişli Kaya, northwest of the Resimli Kaya. The interior of the niche was plastered and decorated with a single scene painting. In the centre of the scene, Mary and child Jesus are depicted. Based on the stylistic and iconographic characteristics of the paintings, it is understood that the second phase of the first group of paintings of the Painted Rock was renewed during the Middle Byzantine period. As for the paintings on the rosette rock, their stylistic and motif choices point to the Iconoclasm period.

At the lowest part of the rock mass, there is a natural hollow, popularly known as "Bahattin Haystack" with a circular arrangement and a wide opening. The interior of this natural hollow, which was used without any additions, is decorated with a non-figurative painting programme in fresco technique, starting from the upper cover up to a height of 1 m above the floor. The upper cover, which is completely covered with a layer of soot, was surrounded by a circular form with double bands. The lower part of the circular form is surrounded by a border in which geometric arrangements are decorated with floral motifs. In the lower part of the border, there are 6 panels in different forms with crosses, floral and geometrical arrangements, separated from each other by bands. Three of the panels are complete and the other three are partially extant. The cross, floral motifs and inscription in the northwest of the lower row of this section and the partially preserved geometrical ornaments in the southeast constitute the two separate panels of the last decoration belt of the space. In the preserved sections of the wall paintings covering the interior of the Bahattin Samanlığı Cave, a decoration programme showing the characteristics of the aniconic was applied, including crosses, floral and geometric motifs as well as inscriptions. As in other Iconoclastic examples, the dominant element in the decoration is the cross. The cross has been widely used as a symbol of fertility, immortality, life, spirit, etc. since the earliest times, with varying meanings according to the cultures in which it was found. In the wall paintings of the Bahattin Samanlığı rock carving, the most common ornamentation after the cross motif consists of geometric forms around
