This could also be seen in the novel Tonggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari. This study discussed the resistance of the female character in the novel to her patron-client practices. Using Scott's patron-client theory, it was revealed that the resistance made by Srintil's character as ronggeng against her patron, Ki Kartareja, was a rule from the ronggeng tradition that shackles her freedom as a human and a woman. Patron-cient relationships that initially worked out eventually led Srintil to fight back. The rules and prohibitions on falling in love, the desire to marry and having children ordered by Kartareja as a ronggeng shaman benefitted only for the men (the patriarchal culture) legitimated by culture led Srintil to rebel and resist in her own way.

It seeks to address the pervasive influence of patriarchal dominance that impedes women's educational rights. The narrative is primarily framed around the life experiences of the film's central figure, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who contends with male counterparts in her quest for admission to prestigious law school programs in the United States. Simultaneously, feminists advocate for education as a cornerstone for women's empowerment and gender equality. It empowers women to become agents of change, thereby emphasising their equal rights to shape a better world. The research adopts a qualitative approach, collecting both primary and secondary data, and employs liberal feminist critical theory for data analysis. Key findings reveal the disadvantaged state of American women in the late 1950s, marked by limited educational access. Despite these obstacles, women, exemplified by Ginsburg, displayed unwavering determination and unity in their pursuit of improved educational opportunities, subsequently expanding their presence in the legal profession and public employment. Ginsburg's remarkable journey serves as an enduring symbol of resilience and inspiration for others, reaffirming the notion that education is a universal right transcending gender barrier.

By ‘children’ means that they are also subjects to whose identity fashion presumably contributes to shape, which is continuous and has the future. By using some theories about fashion and identity from traditional, modern, and postmodern, supported by the awareness of media’s role on constituting consumerism culture amongst children, the fashion’s role in constructing children’s identity is in details scrutinized. As a result, children’s identity formation through fashion is mostly due to their liking on certain characters on cartoon movies. This liking is influenced by media’s role on constituting their consumerism towards the movie and fashion adoration. However, the influence of media power can not represent completely the ‘truer’ identity since it has history as well as future, which will always revolve in such a never-ending cycle....

Research paper thumbnail of Indonesian folktales: feminism and the query of femaleness

LEKSIKA, Mar 11, 2019

This paper aims to study about the query of femaleness in Indonesian folktales from the feminism ... more This paper aims to study about the query of femaleness in Indonesian folktales from the feminism approach. It is taken into account due to women's subordination that allegedly implies the negation of femaleness. In particular, the perpetual story of Malin Kundang represents that owing to her weakness, a woman is a subordinate creature. It happens when Malin Kundang denies the appearance of her mother after a series of successes he makes. Another popular story, Sangkuriang, even depicts that due to her beauty, a woman is an object of sex. It is seen when Sangkuriang proposes Dayang Sumbi to be his wife because of his inability of recognising her as his mother after some year banishment. The subordination eventually drives the two women to struggle against it in order to defend their dignity. The mother of Malin Kundang spells him to be a stone and Dayang Sumbi overtly refuses Sangkuriang's proposal. Their struggles are of course valued of the morality for wider public, too. Despite this, the tales remain a query of women's existence, particularly that of femaleness. The truth that a woman is biologically and socially the mother of man is denied in order to sustain men's superiority. By biologically it means that a woman is the undenied creature for her gifted power of childbirthing. It then socially gives her more power to sustain the generations and the social relationships. Furthermore, it is pivotal to investigate the feminist critical ideas about the essence of femaleness in the Indonesian folktales.
