Material and methods: The present randomised control trial was conducted among 100 patients attending OPD diagnosed with cataract who underwent surgery; age group of more than 40 years were included in the study and randomly divided into 2 groups i.e. Group 1 (who underwent manual SICS) and Group 2 (who underwent Phacoemulsification). Postoperatively, the diagnosis of dry eyes was done by conducting tests viz. Ocular surface disease index questionnaire (OSDI), Schirmer’s test-1, Tear Break up time (TBUT) and impression cytology (IC). Results: Post cataract surgery, mean Schirmer’s value reduced more in group 1 as compared to group 2 at 1 week, 1 month and 3 month with statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Significant deterioration in OSDI was found in both group 1 as well as group 2 after 1 week, 1 month and 3 months of sur...

In 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths. Objectives: To assess the self-care practices among elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to know the factors influencing it. Methodology: A community based crosssectional study was conducted by selecting elderly through systematic random sampling; socio-demographic details and self-care practices were assessed by Summary Diabetes Self-Care Activities questionnaire (SDSCA).Data were entered in excel, descriptive statistics and chi-square were calculated.Results:177 elderly diabetics participated in the study. A majority of 49.71% were in the age group of 69-70years. 58.76% were females, 40.11% were literates, and 55.93% resided in joint families. The self-care practices were computed base...

Research paper thumbnail of Climatic Determinants of Japanese Encephalitis in Bihar State of India: A Time-Series Poisson Regression Analysis

Journal of Communicable Diseases, 2018

Southeast Asia, especially India, is also not an exception to JE. The present study was carried out to know about the climatic determinants that affect occurrence and transmission of JE cases. The data on maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall was retrieved for the period from 2009 to 2014. Similarly, JE surveillance data was also retrieved for the same period. Time-series Poisson regression analysis was used to quantify the association between climatic conditions and JE incidences. Among the predictors, time was negatively associated, number of JE cases during last month, relative humidity (1-month lag) and rainfall (2-month lag) were positively associated while average temperature (3-month lag) has no significant association with JE incidence. This will help in early forecasting of the JE incidences, if future climate over the area are known in advance.
