*s after *i, u, r, k, causing the shift of IE *s into *š. The
process is well known from Indo-Iranian and Slavic.
The process also affects Lithuanian but not Latvian or
Old Prussian. The paper demonstrates that the Baltic
area was fully affected by the ruki-rule; the “defective”
results in the Baltic languages are results of secondary
depalatalizations. The paper also provides examples
of similar processes affecting “Pedersen’s” sibilant in
other satəm-languages.

t. If we compare the development of the peripheral plosive1 clusters in both Indo-European
branches, we see that such Proto-Germanic clusters were not subject to the spirantization of the
final t, unlike those of Proto-Armenian. This development leads us to assume that the Proto-
Germanic peripheral plosive clusters were spirantized already before the shift itself appeared, in
contrast to the Proto-Armenian clusters, which were spirantized as a complex unit by the
Lautverschiebung without any previous spirantization.

Postuluje tři druhy metriky, každou jak pro fony tak i pro fonemy. Linearni struktura řeci může být popsana pomoci linerani fonove metriky, ktera se zaobira delkou řetězce, pozici fonů a dvěma směry linearni dimenze. Podobna linerani metrika může být použita pro fonemy (linearni fonemova metrika, nabizi se mnoho možnosti srovnavani obou typů linearni metriky. Jiným typem metriky je hruba metrika, založena na konfrontaci a srovnani prvků znamých řetězců. Opět rozlisujeme mezi fonovou a fonemovou metriky, obě s rozlicnými možnostmi použiti. Třetim typem je jemna metrika (jak fonova, tak fonemova), ktera specifikuje rozdily mezi prvky pomoci distinktivnich rysů.

Unlike previous minor studies on the theme, which on account of their partial nature could not fu... more Unlike previous minor studies on the theme, which on account of their partial nature could not fully capture the deeper principles of the development of Proto-Indo-European obstruent + *t/dh/s clusters, the present book provides a structural view of their development in all branches of Indo-European languages both in breadth and depth. Inter alia, Bartholomae’s law, tau celticum and the issues of Lautverschiebung both in Germanic and Armenian are also innovatively treated.
The highly structured text makes the volume a unique work of reference. Anyone interested in the Indo-European consonant system and its continuation in the various branches of the Indo-European language family will find the book with its new solutions and new answers to many (old) questions indispensable to their research. Other linguists such as typologists will also profit from its findings and groundbreaking methodology.
Some of the particular findings of the book:
(1) There is a very common progressive development of the two-obstruent clusters, which generally follows a trajectory of lenition, with the given outcomes being points on the line of spirantization –sibilantization – debuccalization – ellipsis.
(2) It turns out that in different Indo-European branches the inclination to this trajectory (or the absence of it) then remarkably splits the development within the respective branches. Thus, progressive Slavic languages differ from regressive Baltic, progressive Iranian from regressive Indian, progressive Sabellian from regressive Latin.
(3) The concept of the development of the Tt cluster is conceived differently from the existing concept of affricativization (Tt > tst), assuming that most Indo-European languages are following the spirantization trajectory into *ϑt. Affricativization being a minor variant attested only in two peripheral branches, both variants being probably different stages on the same trajectory.

the last decades, renowned above all for his etymological
studies of Indo-European, Afroasiatic, Chadic, Siberian, Uralic
and many other language families of the world. He has also
conducted extensive research in lexicostatistics, glottochronology,
and onomastics as well as language contact.
The present volume is a festschrift presented in Professor
Blažek’s honour by colleagues from 14 countries, with a short
biography and comprehensive bibliography of his publications.
The papers reflect the honorand’s many contributions to
the development of historical linguistics and cover topics
ranging from etymology, language contact, linguistic typology,
functional analysis, and onomastics to general problems of
linguistics and the history of the discipline.

The formalizing of different reduplicated stems started with the distinction between the INFECTUM (non stative) and the PERFECTUM (stative stem), being caused by the introduction of modal system to the PERFECTUM. Different reduplicated stems are distinguished by their ablaut value and secondary stems, added to the system later, as for example the causative aorist, are following the same system.
