Based on the traditional border ballad "Tam Lin," the play is a carnivalesque and ironic reinterpretation that builds upon various intersections of boundaries, particularly those between past and present, tradition and modernity, reality and fantasy, and the living and the dead. Prudencia, the protagonist, is an old-fashioned PhD student trapped between the conventions of the old world and the necessities of the modern world. Nick, the play's liminal character, is a devil appearing in human form. This article explores the play's themes of liminality and liminal personae, building on Arnold van Gennep's concept of the liminal space. The article analyzes how the play manipulates spatial, temporal, and societal boundaries and reveals the transformations that these liminal experiences create in the characters. Moreover, this analysis is designed to help understand the play's broader cultural and societal themes. Additionally, the article aims to examine how Greig's work tackles and reinterprets the traditions of the border ballad genre, and how this reinterpretation enriches the unique aesthetic and thematic qualities of the work. This approach demonstrates how Greig's work amalgamates traditional and modern elements to find a new and original way of narrating liminal experiences and transformations.

Kathleen Jamie is one of the contemporary Scottish poets who deal with national identity in their works. Although Jamie's work is characterized by a keen interest in nature and the environment, her work is also preoccupied with issues related to Scotland and Scottish culture. Furthermore, Jamie has also contributed to the independence movement in Scotland which resulted in a devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999. As an ardent supporter of independence, Jamie has dealt with the cultural past and current political state of Scotland in her poems as well as Scottish identity, its dialects, culture, and political history. In this respect, this paper will focus on how the political issues concerning the national and cultural state of Scotland are dealt with in Jamie's two poems "Interregnum", and "23/09/14" from her two poetry collections; respectively Jizzen (1999) which was written during the devolution referendum of 1997, and her latest collection, The Bonniest Company (2016), which was written during the independence referendum of 2014. As is well known, Chronos, the personification of time, is the origin of everything, and all that human being does in the universe is under its command. That is to say, Chronos starts a chain of events in a specific place and time, and these events influence each other like dominos. For example, the actions and adventures of heroes and the ordinary people are bound to history and its circumstances. Thus, history is not what we inherit; it is also what we are forced to endure. It is not limited to the chronology of wars, inventions and destructions of countries or societies. The comprehensive development of human beings and societies, their actions and behaviours are also related to time and historical consciousness.

Global Perspectives on Nationalism, 2022

Scotland’s struggle for recognition in a political context dates back to the 1707 Act of Union, w... more Scotland’s struggle for recognition in a political context dates back to the 1707 Act of Union, which first caused Scotland to lose its parliament, then its independence, and was thus nullified as a country in terms of politics to become part of the union. As a result, restless Scots who felt ignored as an equal partner of the union, especially those who lived in the Highlands, continued to fight for their sovereignty. This fight later turned into a struggle for identity after the Battle of Culloden in 1745, which resulted in the long-lasting assimilation of Scots’ culture and language in the Highlands. Scotland initially attempted to recover and rebuild its national identity after the long-lasting and devastating wars. Later, the Scots worked on rebuilding their identity by introducing and sharing its cultural richness with the whole world through devotedly publicized Scottish literature and sports. Both their bloody past and the cultural richness of the Scots have become the foundation for its national anthem, which is still a work in progress. Even though they are using the United Kingdom’s national anthem “God Save the Queen” as the official anthem, Scotland has been working on creating its own, reflecting its unique history, cultural heritage and geographical features. A national anthem can be thought of as the personification of nation and its pride. The need for an anthem became part of the struggle for recognition as a nation after the victory of regaining the devolved parliament in 1999. The purpose of this study is to explore the progress of Scots’ choice of national anthems for Scotland, to analyse the anthems in terms of their content, and determine the deciding factors in establishing one. This study also seeks to find out the extent to which their perception of nationalism is reflected in Scots’ in-progress national anthems. This chapter will argue that the model of nationalism that the Scottish government is trying to build is a mixed structure of civic and ethnic nationalism in which it seeks unity with a spiritual nation that takes its roots from the past, with a liberal, civic model of citizenship facing modernity. Three potential anthems performed for various ceremonies will be analysed: “Flower of Scotland”, “Scotland the Brave”, and “A Man’s A Man for A’ That” (“Is There an Honest Poverty?”).
