In early stages of development the local home environmentexternality is the dominating factor and hence the distributionof income becomes polarized; whereas in mature stages of developmentthe global technological externality dominates and the distributionof income ultimately contracts. Polarization, in early stagesof development may be a necessary ingredient for future economicgrowth. An economy that prematurely implements a policy designedto enhance equality may be trapped at a...

Existing studies provide various results, with some studies arguing the existence of regional convergence, while others argue the opposite results even regarding the same country. Since there are several approaches to the convergence hypothesis, we should choose the best approach and examine the hypothesis with data from East Asian economies in order to evaluate this proposition more rigorously.

Firstly, the Japanese electrical equipment industry did not undergo a period of deindustrialization in the 1990's. We define "deindustrialization" as a reduction of value or quantity in production. Secondly, the introduction of new products and strong competition in domestic markets expanded the production of digital home appliances, what now is the leading industry in Japan.

Our analysis provides evidence to reconsider the mainstream approach to economic growth in the literature. Our findings demonstrate that product upgrading from household wares to electrical and electronic parts brought about growth of the industry. This movement was initiated by the innovative entrepreneurs who had been workers at other companies in the same industry. These features are not incorporated in the neoclassical growth models which have mostly been used for empirical studies.

After examining them closely, we found that there are discrepancies between the two. This article describes the discrepancies and stresses the need for caution when using them.

Somewhat inexplicably, most of the existing research on the economic growth of East Asia fails to address the influence of the Vietnam War. However, the war demonstrably had a major impact on the economic growth of the region. In this paper, in addition to presenting data elucidating the extent of this impact, we will also discuss Japanese and South Korean policies of involvement in the Vietnam War (whether active or passive), in the belief that this provides evidence showing the influence of foreign policy on economic growth.

The main focus is on the quality of aid and on past conceptual differences and on an emerging convergence between these two major donors, with Japan having the potential advantage of being able to bring its own historical experience in development to bear.
