Zhe Tian (original) (raw)
Synopsis
In the far reaches of the dark and frozen universe, nine enormous dragon corpses were tied with an ancient bronze coffin. It seems that they were set there since the birth of the universe. Such an astonishing scene was captured by a space probe floating in outer space.
Nine dragons and the mysterious bronze coffin made people wonder whether they came back to ancient times or just reached the other shore of the universe. A giant mythical world was unfolded, where immortality gradually appeared and paranormal events continuously occurred.
Countless people started to find their own tracks (The Dao) in such a mythical realm. Their passion was like a turbulent ocean wave that would never cease. The heat in their blood was like erupting volcanoes. Their desire for power and immortality dragged them down to the chasm without knowing it.
Thirty-three classmates held a reunion after graduating. Their friendship was tested, as the bronze coffin took them away from earth and arrived on another unknown planet. The desire for living forced them to follow the path of the ancient gods. Entering a new world of cultivation, will any of them reach immortality, or will they all die along the way?

Zhe Tian combines beautiful animation with a captivating story. It brings to life a world of martial arts, and complex relationships.
The visuals are beautifully rendered, with vibrant landscapes and intricate character designs that truly enhance the experience. The story follows the journey of its protagonist as they navigate both personal growth and larger-than-life conflicts. While the pacing may occasionally feel slow, the world-building and character development more than make up for it.
The rich lore and emotionally charged moments keep viewers engaged, while the series explores themes of fate, ambition, and loyalty. It offers a visually impressive and emotionally resonant experience, making it a... must-watch for fans of epic fantasy and Chinese animation.

"Not all things will start great then ends great, and not all things also start bad then ends bad." - me.
Although this show doesn't end yet (as of the time of writing), I just realized it on this particular donghua after watching 41 episodes that this show is really good! Best donghua in terms of animation so far imo (better than mortal's journey to immortality even if they are somewhat alike). There is no stutter in their motions. It's very fluid even the way the mouth and body moves. It's just that, many people dropped this because of very long prologue/intro that took more or... less than 10 episodes.
The story is good. The pacing is slow, especially the first quarter of this season (which is too slow), but it tells you what you need to know about the world our MC currently living and how cultivation works in detail. As usual, there are humans and demons fighting against each other but the demons here are not really that evil unlike other cultivation donghua or anime where the stereotype about demons are "evil". I'm not literate enough to tell you the detailed, well-versed review in terms of its story. You can say that it is a generic cultivation donghua, but it's good imo.
The visuals are the best in this show as I stated from the beginning. It doesn't feel awkward watching their reactions to certain things. Of course, everything has its improvements but as of the time of writing, from big to small details, it's flawless! 10/10
The sounds are good but not so extraordinary. It's well complemented with how the show change its pace.
Don't let the rating fool you. I almost dropped this too but good thing I let the time pass to where it is now before I start watching it again. I guess my decision to watch this really pays off. Great job to the production team! I'm eager to watch more! Whether you take my personal review or not, it's up to you. If you have enough patience, even if you are new to this genre, definitely worth a try! If not but still curious, then you might skip or put it in your "plan to watch" and let the time decide for you. If not both, skip!

Slow beginning & weak characters make for a quite boring start. But once the show finds it's footing, it's enjoyable.
Early on the show reminds me a lot of A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality:
- The visuals & plot pacing are very similar
- Both main characters begin as a mortal
- Both main characters have a story reason for slow cultivation
What results in a bad start for Shrouding The Heavens:
Ye Fan does not feel believable or relatable as a main character. Shrouding The Heavens spends the first 6 episodes showing Ye Fan & his former classmates' journey after being taken away from Earth by a... mysterious coffin. These early episodes were mostly spent running away from monsters, and did not provide much information on Ye Fan or his former classmates. This beginning is then tied to Ye Fan's character motivations & story progression, resulting in a fairly poor & uninteresting foundation.
The story also starts slow. Most of the first 20 episodes are pretty much spent on running away from dangers, or watching other cultivators from the sidelines. These 20 episodes are followed by small arcs that don't really tie together well. It's only starting episode 36 that the show begins to find it's footing, as the different story arcs & characters connect in a more coherent way.
To anyone who is fine with a slow start & still wants to give Shrouding The Heavens a chance, mainly expect a balance of romance/harem elements, comedy, action & several recurring characters.
