Steins;Gate: Heiji Kyokusen no Epigraph (original) (raw)

The Epigraph Trilogy is basically the manga version of Steins;Gate 0.

Story: 8/10
I quite enjoy the story so far despite it still being a bit of a mystery and what the protagonist's objective is is unknown. However, this is only the first part of the trilogy and knowing Steins;Gate, they'll probably connect everything together later on.

Art: 5/10
I personally don't think the artstyle is that great and it's much more different than the artstyle in the anime and visual novel. But it's not neccesarily bad, just not my taste. However, I didn't think too much of it since the art didn't really affect my enjoyment negatively.

Character: 10/10
If... you loved the characters in the original Steins;Gate as I did then you will love them here as well. it's quite a refreshing sight to see all of them in different clothing and new characters are introduced. The way the creators changed Okabe Rintaro's appearance and personality was really good as it fits with his depression. This was pretty shocking to me because I was so used to the chuuninbyou Hououin Kyouma. It felt weird but it made the story more interesting.

Overall: 8/10
This is what you would expect from the Steins;Gate franchise and I can't wait to read the rest. Hopefully I'll have a mindblowing experience just like I had in the original!

be wary of the numbers I put because I'm not very critical with my /10 ratings and usually put things I love over 7. It is a manga adaptation of a light novel that was created before Steins;Gate 0 and tells just about the same, albeit less convoluted and more straightforward, story. It is a great shame that this manga adaptation was canceled when production of the Steins;Gate 0 proper manga adaptations started because I consider this to be a much better version of the story in manga form.

The emotion is told very well in the story, and the visuals are in one of... the best art styles I've seen in a Stein;Gate product, and I own a lot of spinoff mangas lol. It doesn't try to replicate Huke's style or create a very standardized style, but brings its own high level of polish and grit to the characters that is very appealing, as well as more dynamic takes on character designs being possible.

The characters are also presented very well, with new clothing designs for each character that are sometimes, in my opinion better, more varied and believable than the designs used in 0. Okabe's look better fits his personality and reflect his new priorities very well. Other characters that were first introduced in this and 0 have similar designs to 0 besides clothing tweaks, except for Leskinen who looks very different in a way I don't like as much(difference is probably a result of him not having a character design in the light novel or something idk) Overall great read, and would definitely recommend reading it after the Steins;Gate 0 visual novel to see the story in a new perspective and in an enjoyable style.
