INTRODUCTION: Confusion is always seen between the students' and the teachers' communities in relation to the grading and evaluation of a written script. Most students fail to reach the teacher's expectations whenever they have to write assignments, exams or any other kind of writing practices that require evaluation. If a student is asked to write a paragraph on a certain topic under essay writing competition, the student writes to his ability by concentrating only on the content but the teacher gives him less grade contrary to his expectations. Here the teacher's expectations from the text are crucial; unfortunately, those expectations are indefinite to the student. Thus the student gets a less grade after the evaluation of his script. While writing the script the student concentrates on the content and neglects the structure, grammar and other elements of a text but the teacher expects those aspects besides the content in the text. This confusion results in disappointment in the minds of the learners. This type of traditional evaluation of students' writing skills is a subjective practice of evaluation and makes the students confused. The feedback which is given to the learners often reveals what they failed to do, instead of what they did well in the text that is presented for evaluation (Townsend, Fu, & Lamme, 1997). There must be a bridge between the teachers' expectations and the students' presentation of ideas in relation to writing and evaluating an assignment, an exam or any other written script. Rubrics are used to help the students write any script reaching out to the evaluator's expectations. It also helps the learner know what is important in a written script. 2. RUBRICS: A rubric is a guide consisting of a list of specific principles for grading or evaluating or scoring academic assignments (Merriam-Webster). Rubrics are basically designed as a matrix that carries presentation levels and broad criteria in horizontal and vertical axes. Each cell in the matrix gives a particular description of the criteria. Generally, a customary rubric contains a point-based scale of assessment of the text. High scores are given to the best presentation of the text that carries the expectations of the evaluator. The top scores are 4, 5, or 6 and the lowest scores are 0 or 1. The teacher has to clearly specify what is required at each level of the presentation of the data in a rubric through simple and apparent language. When the student presents his opinion, explanation or the idea by following the rubrics, the teacher gives scores for the performance level (Jochum, Curran, & Reetz, 1998). The construction of rubrics can be characterized to be holistic or analytical, based on the varied approaches that are followed by the evaluator. A rubric can be built on the task from the perception of describing the essential aspects of the text (Huba and Freed, 2000; Arter and McTighe, 2001). A rubric designer can approach the task with a clear initiative of the preferred students' learning outcomes not even considering the recommended approach of creating a rubric (Luft,1999) and importantly it should have a clear picture of what meeting each outcome looks like. Since writing is considered as a very formal mode of communication it demands perfection. A written composition should not only lucid in its message but also ideal in its construction. No matter what reason a person has for his bad writing ability but the problems in writing will undoubtedly cause a great damage to their success in production of ideas or information. This paper focuses on the most common problems in writing that the learners often show in their written composition and some effective strategies to be introduced to achieve perfection in writing of ESL learners.

Sociolinguistics differs from sociology of language. The focus of sociolinguistics is the effect of the society on the language, while the latter's focus is on the effect of the language on the society. A common phenomenon in bilingual /multilingual societies is Code-switching/Code-mixing across the languages in contact. Linguists have stated many a time that there exists a neat compartmentalization of languages in the Indian multilingual contexts but now the urban Indian sociolinguistic scene is fast changing, especially after the advent of multiple TV channels, FM radios, and Internet etc. All this lexical borrowing is giving rise to extensive code-mixing and code-switching. Code-mixing and Code-switching is a well-accepted phenomenon in Indian societies. Most of the Advertisements use Code-Switching and Code-Mixing to attract customers and to increase turnover. In this context the researcher attempts a sociolinguistic description of language contact instances such as code-mixing and code-switching, between English and Telugu/Hindi in the bi/multilingual, multicultural advertisements.

Point of view basically refers to the way a story is told, the mode of its narration. Point of view concerns, produces, results in, perspectives on, evaluations of, events and characters. It is about influencing readers to form certain opinions, or not to form certain opinions. This paper is concerned with the analysis of "point of view" in Khushwant Singh's short story 'The Mark of Vishnu.' It makes an attempt to investigate how Khushwant Singh achieves his spatio-temporal, ideological and psychological perspectives through his language. He continuously interferes with the comprehension of the readers by guiding them in terms of locating the places and time through his spatio-temporal perspective. He also influences the feelings of the readers by communicating his ideas through his psychological perspective. He also presents the mindset of his characters by describing the commonly accepted social practices in the society through his ideological perspective. Point of view on spatio-temporal, ideological and psychological planes helps the narrator achieve his purpose effectively.

He continuously interferes with the comprehension of the readers by guiding them in terms of narrating the events from his perspective. He also influences the feelings of the readers by communicating his ideas through a particular mode of narration. To achieve the desired response from the reader, the author has many models of presentation of a character's talk at his disposal. And, the choice of the modes of speech and thought presentations has received sustained investigation from stylisticians. Therefore, this paper is concerned with the "modes of narration" in Khushwant Singh's short story 'Karma'. It makes an attempt to investigate how Khushwant Singh achieves his purpose through his language by applying Mick Short Model. In this story, the narrator, Khushwant Singh, presents most of Sir Mohan Lal's, the main character, dialogues in FIS to achieve the irony where as NRA is used to narrate the unnecessary stretches of conversations of Sir Mohan Lal and his wife Lachmi. The dialogues of two English soldiers and Sir Mohan Lal in the train are deliberately put in FDS to create some confusion in the readers. FIT is used to make the readers directly get into the mind of Sir Mohan Lal and promptly K. RATNA SHIELA MANI & N. MADHU 40 understand his emotions and feelings. On the whole, this paper succinctly gives a description of the narrator's effective "use" and "effect" of the modes to express the characters' speeches and thoughts according to his purpose.

Manoj Das has presented a serene and simple way of life of rural community in India in his fiction which is rapidly disappearing. He is one of the foremost short story writers in Post-Independent India and an outstanding bilingual writer both in English and Oriya at ease. Anand introduces his child hero, Krishan Chander, who is only a thinly disguised fictional presentation of Anand himself, and most of his experiences belong to his creator. Seven summers is invaluable in the study of the influences that shaped Anand’s mind and made him the writer and the man he is. His parents and their attitudes influenced him strongly, and his portrait of his family is candid and exact. It is a brilliant novel on childhood. In Seven Summers he dramatizes his own experiences and presents an intense soul searching account of his real life. Krishan Chander is the protagonist of the novel and his early perceptions and impressions form the palpable substance of the story. The novel purportedly deals with the life of krishan in his formative years. The central motif of the novel lies in the exploration of the theme of “innocence” and experience. This novel i...

The Glass Palace, The Shadow Lines, Sea of Poppies, In An Antique Land, and The Hungry Tide. The Calcutta Chromosome is one of his important novels and award winning works of science fiction. Ghosh is well known for his interest in the Indian colonial history and the contribution of the English language in the postcolonial world. In The Calcutta Chromosome he points towards an "alternative" history that makes me interested to work on this book. Ghosh's writing style is very much inspired by the other Bengali Indian writers such as Rabindranath Tagore or Phanishwar Nath Renu.
