cannot be over emphasised, even though it has for a very long time been overlooked. With
the recent rise of infectious diseases outbreaks like Ebola, severe acute respiratory
syndrome and the other life threatening diseases, architectural design of space is not just
any contributor to the possibility of infection spread in hospitals, but a major one. In this
project, the degree and extent to which architectural design of hospitals, and the
considerations made during their design, is therefore assessed, using the Ahmadu Bello
university sickbay as a case study, were variables capable of contributing towards
mitigating the commonly accepted notion of hospital acquired infections (HAI) are
assessed. This research is qualitative and used metadata including plans, sections, as well
as illustration and photographs, analysing them with existing scientific knowledge to see
how variables such as building layout, ventilation patterns and modes, material
specification to mention a few, chosen at the design stage, in designing hospitals can help
in reducing the trend of hospital acquired infections and hopefully spread of infectious
diseases in general. The result of this research shows that the major categories, that have
the most impact in contributing to the transmission of infectious diseases in hospitals
include; the architectural spatial considerations such as the buildings layout, the type and
modes of ventilations and the arrangements of furniture to mention a few, as well as the
material specification and choices of the designers are also of great influence.
