This comparative study aims to investigate the similarities and differences between the two Arab ... more This comparative study aims to investigate the similarities and differences between the two Arab poets, Badr Shaker Al-Sayyab and Salah Abd al-Sabur from one hand and T. S. Eliot from the other. The study attempts to investigate the attitudes of those poets towards impersonality. It shows how impersonality from the perspective of Abd al-Sabur is not like Eliot's, who emphasizes that impersonality is critical to poetry while Abd al-Sabur argues that personality and impersonality together form a perfect work. Unlike them, Al-Sayyab does not have critical comments on the terms of personality and impersonality. The study also aims to investigate the resemblance between those poets, regarding their attitudes towards traditional heritage. It also attempts to investigate intertextuality between their texts. The analysis is comparatively based on some selected poems composed by the three above-mentioned poets. The study concludes that Al-Sayyab, Abd al-Sabur and Eliot hold similar views on traditional heritageas they emphasize the necessity of a positive relation between modern and traditional heritage. In regards to impersonality in poetry, Eliot contradicts himself because he could not escape being impersonal in his poetry. On the other hand, Abd al-Sabur's and Al-Sayyab's poems bear stamps of personality and impersonality. The study also concludes that intertexulaity between Al-Sayyab and Abd al-Sabur, from one hand and T. S. Eliot from the other, is due to acculturation rather than influence and eurocentrism.

This comparative study presents a new perspective on discussing the relationship between Arabic a... more This comparative study presents a new perspective on discussing the relationship between Arabic and English modernist poetry. Most of the previous Arabic studies in the field of comparative literature focused on the issue of the “influence” rather than Inter textulaity and acculturation between the two literatures, Arabic and English. Similarly, the scholarships available in English on the topic either apply Western theories on Arabic literature or study the topic from Western perspective. The study argues that though the similarity between Arabic and English modernisms, Arabic modernism remains in its own right draws on Arabic cultural heritage. The similarity between Arabic and English modernisms is due the factors of acculturation and hybridity between Arabs and the Westerners. The study concludes that Arabic modernism is an Arabic offspring and enjoys its own cultural identity. In this sense, this study rejects the Eurocentric hegemony which always westernizes “modernism”.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the issue of intertextuality in the novel Alfirdaws Alyab... more The aim of this paper is to investigate the issue of intertextuality in the novel Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) by the female Saudi novelist and short story writer Laila al-Juhani. Intertextuality is a rhetoric and literary technique defined as a textual reference deliberate or subtle to some other texts with a view of drawing more significance to the core text; and hence it is employed by an author to communicate and discuss ideas in a critical style. The narrative structure of Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) showcases references of religious, literary, historical, and folkloric intertextuality. In analyzing these references, the study follows the intertextual approach. In her novel The Waste Paradise, Laila al-Juhani portrays the suffering of Saudi women who are less tormented by social marginalization than by an inner conflict between openness to Western culture and conformity to cultural heritage. This paper aims to present a semiotic reading of the Icon in the story of Al-Zill Al-Ari [The Nak... more This paper aims to present a semiotic reading of the Icon in the story of Al-Zill Al-Ari [The Naked Shadow] by the Yemeni short story writer and novelist Mohammed Al-Gharbi Imran. This paper is grounded in the critical semiotic approach to seeks to reveal the meaning of the Icons represented in the story by tracing the process of signification and the dynamics of importance within the story discourse. The study explores the implications of the Icons to produce general significance and to embody them in the context of the story discourse where its elements intermingle to reveal close and far meanings. The story of Al-Zill Al-Ari revolves around the character Alwan, who strives for a better life for himself.
